  1. My selections for this week: - Tom Harrell - Stories (Contemporary, 1988) - Julius Hemphill - Julius Hemphill Big Band (Elektra Musician, 1988) - Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition - Audio-Visualscapes (Impulse, 1988) Three really strong picks, IMO. What say you?
  2. Rab -- It's all the same music, just re-swizzled in different packages. The Live at Minton's and The Tenor Scene CDs collect all of the music from the Minton's gig -- with the exception of a track (or maybe two) that were reissued on one of the duo's studio CD reissues. NP: Randy Weston - Self Portraits: The Last Day (Verve, 1990) with Jamil Nasser (b); Idris Muhammad (d); and Eric Asante (perc) Weston sounds terrific playing the Bösendorfer Imperial on this album. Such DEEP resonance -- just like a massive drum. I couldn't agree more, Larry.
  3. Now spinning: The Bill Perkins Quartet - Journey to the East (Contemporary, 1985) Bill Perkins (ts, fl) with Frank Strazzeri (p); Joel DiBartolo (b); and Peter Donald (d) I've been enjoying Bill Perkins' music lately. He seems to have carved out his own little niche among the many Lester-inspired tenors.
  4. Clint Houston - Inside the Plain of the Elliptic (Timeless, 1979) 2015 Solid/UltraVybe CD reissue The Clint Houston-Joanne Brackeen musical hookup is always a pleasure. This album isn't quite a potent as their duo LP New True Illusion. But it's close.
  5. Terrible news. R.I.P.
  6. Roy Ayers Ubiquity - He's Coming (Polydor/Verve, 1972)
  7. Georges Arvanitas Trio - Live Again (Futura Records, 1973) with Jacky Samson (b) and Charles Saudrais (d)
  8. Cachao - Tropical Classics (Salsoul) compiles two LPs on one CD: Cachao y Su Descarga '77', Vol. 1 and Dos
  9. It's great. Like many college football fans, I have a connection with my team that's more than just geography. My wife and I both went to the University of Georgia. One of my sons went there. My sister-in-law went there. And tons of my friends and co-workers went there. People get ridiculously worked up about college football -- and they're especially rabid about it in the South. Down here, the college game is MUCH bigger and "more important" than the NFL. Georgia's first game is against Oregon on September 3rd. I've been counting down the days like a kid waiting for Christmas. Only TEN days to go!!!
  10. Law degree.
  11. Larry, you beat me to the punch.
  12. He's 24. About to enter UGA law school. Everybody in school during 2020 got an extra year of eligibility, due to COVID. Not sure why he's older, other than that.
  13. Now: 2 LPs on 1 CD: Rushing Lullabies (1958) and Little Jimmy Rushing & the Big Brass (1959)
  14. That photo ^ of Woody Shaw and WS III is fantastic. I'm happy that COLLEGE FOOTBALL season is almost here. And look who's on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
  15. You're right, mjazzg, we're weird too. ... But it's a different flavor of weird. I just happen to like my kinda weird; i.e., people who hang out on THIS forum. Besides, people who aren't weird are boring.
  16. EDIT Yuri is chillin' on my amp, listening to the music. Apparently, he likes John Stowell.
  17. McLaren has terminated Daniel Ricciardo's contract. He'll be gone at the end this season: https://us.motorsport.com/f1/news/ricciardo-mclaren-part-ways-2023/10357166/ It'll be interesting to see where Ricciardo lands next year. Presumably, he'll be back at Alpine/Renault -- assuming Oscar Piastri is able to move on. Another thought: If Piastri is unable to disentangle himself from Alpine, who will McLaren go after to fill Ricciardo's seat?
  18. Mongo Santamaria - Mongo '70 (Atlantic) Be well, mjazzg. More positive vibes coming your way.
  19. Oh yeah! Dialogue is magnificent. And it's "almost" an Andrew Hill album -- as much as it's Hutcherson's -- since Hill contributed four of the album's six cuts. (Joe Chambers composed the other two.)
  20. A disc I acquired recently that I'm enjoying very much.
