  1. Now spinning: Al Haig - Reminiscence (Progressive, 1977) with Jamil Nasser (b) and Frank Gant (d); later reissued under the title Ornithology Recent upgrade from MP3 to Japanese vinyl -- complete with OBI strip.
  2. Michael Blake - Kingdom of Champa (Intuition, 1997) Produced by Teo Macero Uncategorizable and brilliant.
  3. And unlike McGwire and Bonds, (I would assume that) Judge isn't using steroids. So, IMO, the only "untainted"/un-asterisked comparison is Babe Ruth. That makes what Judge is doing even MORE impressive. Another long-standing record recently broken: How to describe the month that Austin Riley had, the hitter the Braves third baseman has become? He broke a franchise record Sunday for most extra-base hits in any month, a mark that stood for 61 years and belonged to the all-time MLB extra-base hits leader and one of the greatest players who ever lived, Hank Aaron. Riley not only broke it but also did so with a walk-off double on the first pitch he saw from Arizona reliever Mark Melancon. It was a well-located fastball down and in that Riley somehow lined to right-center, scoring Matt Olson from first base for a 1-0 win and series sweep at Truist Park, where fans chanted “MVP!, MVP!” when Riley strode to the plate. Full article: https://theathletic.com/3465789/2022/07/31/braves-austin-riley-record-hank-aaron/ On top of that, the Braves signed Riley to a 10-year, $212M contract yesterday. The Braves long-term prospects are looking VERY good with so much young talent: Riley, Acuña, Albies, Fried, et al.
  4. Now spinning: Mel Torme - That's All (Columbia, 1965) CD reissue with bonus cuts As much old-fashioned pop and "easy-listening" as it is jazz -- but excellent music, regardless of category.
  5. I like all of the KJ Quartet records -- for many reasons, Dewey and then some.
  6. I'll have to check it out. Thx!
  7. Glad you're back, Larry. Here's to a full and speedy recovery!
  8. Didn't know that Harrell had a new album out. Thanks for the heads-up, kh.
  9. Mosaic Single reissue One of the many high points in Weston's discography, IMO.

  12. The Tony Williams Lifetime - Spectrum: The Anthology (Verve, rel. 1997) Still one helluva wallop.
  13. Tom Harrell - Moving Picture (HighNote, 2017) with Danny Grissett (p), Ugonna Okegwo (b), and Adam Cruz (d)
  14. A profound gut punch and a masterpiece.
  15. Next up: George Russell's New York Band - Live in an American Time Spiral (Soul Note, 1983) Good stuff.
  16. I'm now listening to that Kurt Weill / Sextet of Orchestra USA record too -- but my vinyl is the French RCA MASTERS version. It looks like this: I wish John Lewis & Eric Dolphy played on the whole album, instead of just half.
  17. Red Garland Trio - Swingin' on the Korner: Live at Keystone Korner (Elemental, rec. 1977) with Philly Joe Jones & Leroy Vinnegar

  20. Sonny Rollins - Here's to the People (Milestone, 1991) Yeah.
  21. Watched this for the first time with my (adult) son on Monday night. Good discussion with him afterwards. We both liked how the film doesn't go where you'd expect. What might initially appear to be a crime/thriller genre pic mutates into... something else. Since this is a music forum, I should say that we also both agreed that Hancock's soundtrack is tonally "out-of-alignment" with the movie. Herbie's music seems so organic and soulful; it contrasts sharply with the themes of artificiality & emptiness that permeate the film. But maybe that was an intentional thing on Antonioni's part. I dunno.
