  1. Just now stumbled across this. Incredible! Charlie takes it way, way OUT into OUTER SPACE!!! And it sounds so damn good with the entire band churning underneath.
  2. I don't know those Plaxico records. I should probably check 'em out.
  3. Bennie Wallace - The Free Will (Enja, 1980) and New York Jazz Quartet - Oasis (Enja, 1981)
  4. Immaculate performances. Probably my favorite version of the Ballades (along with Zimerman's).
  5. I feel the same as you about Blackmon & Roney. Their Muse stuff has never knocked me out. On the other hand, Jack Walrath's Muse records are treeeee-mendous. And, of course, who could forget Bill Barron's!?!? There are others... but I don't want to show more of my hand. Saving it for the blog!
  6. Prime late Phil. That looks like it'd be one helluva fun ride!
  7. Yep. There are some excellent late-in-the-game Muses out there that are flying beneath the radar. Or at least they were flying below my radar. I've discovered several over the past year or so -- including The Collective -- as part of my 80s Jazz blog project explorations.
  8. Quest - Searching for the New Sound of Be-Bop (Storyville) Disc 1
  9. Cecil Brooks III - The Collective (Muse, 1989)
  10. More from the Alegre All Stars: El Manicero: The Alegre All Stars, Vol. 2 (1964)
  11. Now streaming the first Alegre All Stars album, released in 1961:
  12. Now listening to: Charlie Palmieri !!!
  13. Yes, it would've been nice to have both LPs paired together on one CD. Incidentally, three more cuts from the Vibration Society LP are included as bonus tracks on the CD version of Hilton Ruiz's Crosscurrents (Stash, 1989).
  14. Frank Morgan - Reflections (Contemporary) and Frank Morgan - Reflections (HighNote)
  15. Now playing: Sun Ra Arkestra - Reflections in Blue (Black Saint, 1987)
  16. Earlier today -- Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 and Swan of Tuonela -- from this set:
  17. Larry -- I'm not familiar with that MTT recording, so I'm no help. NP: with the great Alan Civil on French horn as heard in Stokowski's Complete Decca Recordings: Phase 4 Stereo set:
  18. Disc 4 - Prokofiev: Piano Sonatas Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6
  19. More Prokofiev as performed by Gennady Rozhdestvensky: Wonderful.
