  1. Terrific. Fantastic trio!
  2. with "Chombo" Silva, João Donato, a.o. Excellent!
  3. Among Hawk's best sides, IMO.
  4. One of my top discoveries of 2021. Even tho' it came out in 1996, it was new to me. Sylvester's sound reminds me a bit of Arthur Blythe's, without being derivative. They just have a similar sort of pungency. IMO, the best cuts are the ones with percussionist Bobby Sanabria sitting in. If you'd like a taste:
  5. Thanks for the info, EKE BBB. It's amazing that the first album with an image on the cover wasn't released until 1940 (per Discogs). I assumed that albums with picture covers existed well before then. By 1940, how long had 78 rpm albums existed -- multi-disc sets, whether classical, jazz, pop, or whatever? My assumption is that the first album was classical music -- either a single (but whole) movement or an entire multi-movement work (such as a symphony). But that's just a guess. Cool! This one? I think I might need to order that!
  6. Hbj - I'd be interested to know if that was. Just curious: Where did you find this image? Also, where the image above says "record cover," does it mean a cover for a single 78 rpm disc? Or are we talking about the cover of an album of 78 rpm discs? Because I'd imagine that the date for those two things might be different.
  7. Charlie Palmieri - El Gigante del Teclado (Alegre, 1972) and Weather Report - Black Market (Columbia/Legacy, 1976)
  8. Last night (via YT): Ismael Rivera con Kako y Su Orchestra - Lo Ultimo En La Avenida (Tico, 1971) Craft is reissuing this on 180-gram vinyl in January. It's on my to-get list.
  9. I didn't know that Fischer admired Charlie Palmieri... but it does make total sense.
  10. Now spinning: Milt Buckner, Buddy Tate - Crazy Rhythm (Black & Blue, 1968)
  11. Rooster, I think that Kenny Burrell's Live at the Village Vanguard (pictured above) is one of the very best Muse covers! And the Happy Bird cover is just ... generic as could be. Totally nondescript. Muse had some REALLY BAD covers. No doubt about it. ... But THAT KB cover ain't one of them -- at least from my point of view. I think it's terrific. Font, photo, everything. FWIW.
  12. Adding one more 2021 discovery that falls outside "Jazz" genre -- although Wayne Shorter plays on it: Milton Nascimento - A Barca Dos Amantes (Verve, 1986)
  13. Beethoven: Sym. No. 4 / Böhm, VPO (DG), as heard in this set:
  14. Incredible songwriting and singing.
