  1. Pim notes Mal Waldron, and Ethan Iverson (formerly) of The Bad Plus has described the considerable influence that Waldron had on his development. But Iverson has also pointed to bop pianist like Bud Powell and Barry Harris as influences. I think the three pianist named in the original post are very different. Not sure that's there's going to be a singular common root, aside from the broad spectrum of history, with each of them mixing their own cocktails from it. ... Eclecticism rules the day, then and now.
  2. Charlie and Eddie Palmieri
  3. I've been listening to a couple records featuring Francisco "Kako" Bastar: and
  4. Nice finds! Scherchen's recordings of the Mass B minor and The Art of the Fugue -- both originally released on Westminster -- are some of my favorite Bach recordings by anyone.
  5. Now on my 'table: Gato Barbieri - Caliente! (A&M, 1976) The A&Ms aren't my favorite Gato records -- but they're enjoyable. Barbieri & Alpert definitely achieved what they set out to do. EDIT: I'd forgotten how much this sounds like a CTI record. Alpert & Gato definitely "borrowed" Creed Taylor's production approach.
  6. I really dig that set. I kept it even after I got the Mosaic box covering the same music. It just works beautifully. Programming. Sound quality. ... A concentrated dose of perfection.
  7. You're right. Forgot about Mary Lou! Since they were friends, her influence on EKE would've been much more likely.
  8. Right on! Along with Happenings and Medina and Cirrus and ... When my wife saw the photo on San Francisco, she said it looked "goofy." I sorta like it. Deliberate intimacy.
  9. Oh, I missed that one. I thought I'd seen all of Vocalion's Garrick reissues. Apparently not. Interesting point about Garrick's "sacred jazz" preceding EKE's. ... I wonder if Duke was aware of what Garrick was doing in that area, if it possibly influenced his thinking.
  10. NP: Collection of Barretto's jazz-oriented tracks for Fania, 1968-79. Compiled by Bobby Sanabria. ¡Maravillosa compilación!
  11. I've never even seen that before, had no idea that it existed. Good stuff?
  12. I could easily same the same about you -- and a dozen other regulars! We can stop any time we want to, right?!?! But do we want to? ... Of course not!
  13. That's the dangerous thing about this forum! So many knowledgeable listeners posting all sorts of diverse, interesting music. The ears cheer, but the wallet weeps!
  14. Enrico Pieranunzi Trio, Vol. 2 (YVP Music, rec. 1988) Originally released as The Space Jazz Trio, Vol. 2
  15. with Walter Norris
  16. Yes! Next up: Cecil McBee Sextet with Chico Freeman - Compassion (Enja, rec. 1977)
  17. Now spinning: Hannibal and The Sunrise Orchestra - Hannibal (MPS, 1975)
  18. I need to hear that. I'd imagine there's some scorching James Burton.
  19. You're right. ... And it's probably just a matter of scarcity (not that many made in the first place), but I'm discovering that many Latin records are expensive too -- compared to most jazz records. Both LPs and CDs. But they're worth it! I dunno if it's solely a function of frequency. I bet salsa or reggae records are much more likely be played at parties, where folks (not necessarily the owner) are likely to spill their drink on the cover or scratch the vinyl lifting the tonearm. Jazz? As often than not, it's solo listening. So there's less likelihood that the album cover is used as a beer coaster. I would say that the records get treated differently because the music is designed for different contexts. It rains a lot in the tropics!
  20. Hilton Ruiz - Hands on Percussion (RMM/TropiJazz, 1995)
  21. It's an outstanding record. I found the LP at Euclid a few years ago. The vinyl is in excellent condition. Sound is MUCH better than the MP3 downloads I owned previously. Unfortunately, the cover is badly water-damaged. But still... better a damaged cover than a damaged record.
