  1. So true.
  2. Lee Morgan - The Rajah (Blue Note) Recorded in 1966; first released in 1985
  3. Disc 1 - Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 1 "Winter Reveries" and 2 "Little Russian" Wonderful renditions of Tchaikovsky's early symphonies. Rösel's Brahms recordings are terrific.
  4. I agree. It's excellent!
  5. Because we've set it up to be a year-long blog project -- just like my 70s jazz project. Using a calendar year simplifies things. We both plan to post 3 albums/entries per week. So we'll be done after 50 weeks in mid-December. We've also got some set up tasks remaining -- like building out the blog infrastructure. It's not difficult or terribly time-consuming, but it's one of a few preliminary tasks that aren't done yet.
  6. One little update on this project: My collaborator Dan and I met last week and compared our final selections. Turns out that there was only ONE album that appeared on both of our lists. So I decided to let him cover it, and I picked up another one. So now there are many artists that appear on both of our lists, but no albums are duplicated. I think it worked out well. It makes for a wider-ranging survey. Looking forward to the launch in January.
  7. John Abercrombie - Getting There (ECM, 1988) Haven't heard this since my college days, back when it was a new release. A buddy who lived in my dorm had it. Trippy to hear it again after so many years.
  8. Next up: Milt Buckner, Buddy Tate - Crazy Rhythm (Black & Blue, 1968)
  9. Just arrived in the mail:
  10. Vaughan Williams: Tallis Fantasia; London Symphony (No.2), performed by Adrian Boult & the London PO As heard in this set:
  11. Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 "Eroica," performed by Eugen Jochum & the London SO As heard in this set: Everyone thinks Jochum = Bruckner, but his Beethoven and Brahms are terrific too.
  12. Robertinho Silva - Speak No Evil (Milestone) with a cavalcade of Brazilian jazz stars -- including Hermeto, João Donato, Luiz Eça, Milton Nascimento, José Roberto Bertrami, Egberto Gismonti ... Wayne Shorter is on one cut. He's also the album's dedicatee. Yup.
  13. Dayum, Chuck. How cool is THAT. You win!
  14. Tuff music, for sure!
  15. Earlier today, I stumbled across a bunch of inexpensive Bud Freeman LPs on a favorite Discogs seller's site. Couldn't resist. The Compleat Bud Freeman (Monmouth Evergreen) Bud Freeman - The Joy of Sax (Chiaroscuro) That's an ODD cover illustration, but I've heard that the music is good. Bud Freeman - Satin Doll (All Life, France) with Georges Arvanitas (on organ!) and Pierre Michelot The Bud Freeman All-Stars featuring Shorty Baker (Prestige-Swingville/OJC) An upgrade from emusic MP3s to vinyl Would love to hear what you think of this Solal release, EKE.
