  1. Prompted by Kenny Wheeler discussion on another thread: The Maritime Jazz Orchestra featuring Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor & Norma Winstone - Now And Now Again (Justin Time, 2002) Norma Winstone's voice. What a beautiful and expressive instrument! She kills me -- especially when she's paired with such terrific composers as Kenny Wheeler or Michael Garrick.
  2. TOUGH choice. They're both up there, among my all-time faves. OK, I choose Weston -- if only b/c of his music on this album: George Wallington or Al Haig?
  3. I'd likely go Soul Note -- for Waldron and Lacy. Red Garland or Wynton Kelly? Interesting. I've always wondered what Herbie's BN records would sound like if DuNann had recorded them. And Horace's too.
  4. For me, it's gotta be DuNann -- because of the way he recorded pianos. (Rudy probably "wins" for horns tho'.) Liebman or Lovano?
  5. To get us rolling again: Liebman or Lovano?
  6. I don't mind this at all. It's discussion about the topic at hand, in the spirit of the topic at hand. Message to All -- when you make a choice, don't forget to offer another set of options to keep the ball rolling.
  7. If push-comes-to-shove and I've got to take one or the other, I'd go with LOCKJAW. Ellington in the 50s or Ellington in the 60s?
  8. Interesting finds, Ken. Playing "Pot Luck" with obscurities is always fun. I've never even heard of Ralph Gari. Sound good?
  9. I'm sure that Magnificent Goldberg would have plenty of ideas to offer. Wish he was still active on the board.
  10. I'll take Bud Shank -- if only because I'm more familiar with him. Sticking with altoists: Charles McPherson or Sonny Criss?
  11. Groove sounds great on this one -- and Houston Person came to play too.
  12. Hey, that's GREAT. So glad you're enjoying it!
  13. Next up: Tremendous. One of Joe's very best, IMO.
  14. Now listening to Bobby Hutcherson's The View from the Inside, as heard on this set: Super chill.
  15. Probably not. How about what I asked earlier: Ira Sullivan or Red Rodney?
  16. Hmm. I've been pondering whether I should plunk for Tolliver's Live at the Loosdrecht Jazz Festival. It's a two-LP set, so it's even more costly than Pure Pleasure's regular prices. Do you have that one, sidewinder? I also noticed that PP is reissuing Cecil McBee's Music from the Source. Another disc that's VERY tempting. I'm sure the PP reissue would flog my Inner City vinyl AQ-wise.
  17. Stanley Clarke - for his early 70s stuff. Ira Sullivan or Red Rodney?
