  1. Freddie Hubbard & Stanley Turrentine - In Concert (CTI) with Herbie Hancock, Eric Gale, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette Combines two LPs (sorta) on one CD. Hancock received co-leader billing on Vol. 2 of the original vinyl release. I think he should've had it on this CD release too. His contributions are at least the equal of Freddie's & Turrentine's.
  2. Disc 2: Works by Ravel, Falla and Rodrigo A desert-island disc.
  3. Groove Holmes with Teddy Edwards & Pat Martino. Ruby Braff. Prez!!! Some strong stuff today. 👍
  4. An excellent band making superb music.
  5. Joey Baron - Down Home (Intuition, 1997) with Arthur Blythe, Ron Carter, and Bill Frisell I really like this disc.
  6. Stanley Turrentine - Never Let Me Go (Blue Note, 1963) I've been listening to Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott every day for a few weeks now. Not even starting to get tired of them. Not. One. Bit.
  7. Oh yeah. RRK's on FIRE on that one!!! I've been listening to a couple new-to-me CDs, freebies from a friend. and
  8. Al Grey Jazz All-Stars - Travelers Lounge Live (Travelers Productions, Inc., 1977) with Jimmy Forrest and Shirley Scott (exclusively on piano)
  9. Fathead Comes On and House of David from this 32 Jazz set:
  10. felser, the Chucho recording is very interesting. I think you'd dig it. The band is a trio, but instead of a trap set in the percussion role, Valdés uses a batá. So it's a trio with a Cuban a twist. Here's the LP in full: One indicator of this album's enduring influence: Chucho recently reissued a follow-up called Jazz Batá 2. How often do you hear of a sequel that appears nearly 50 years (!) after an initial release? Absolutely. Honestly, I think I'd enjoy hearing Teddy Edwards play scales! He's just got that magnetic thing going with his sound. An added bonus for me: I've been bingeing on Stanley Turrentine over the last month or so -- including his three discs with Jimmy Smith: Midnight Special, Chicken Shack, and Prayer Meeting. So it's fun to do the comparo thing, hearing Mr T. with Jimmy Smith and then hearing Teddy do his very different but equally wonderful thing with Smith. It's like I'm sitting in down for Thanksgiving and there's goodies all over the place! Mmmm...

All COVID-19 related. 12-hour workdays have become the norm, so it's hard to dedicate much time to the blog. I'm just tuckered out, and I find myself just wanting to listen. But I'm still trying to post each entry daily. Even if it's just a list of titles, that's... something. As for the music... Nice mix of titles this week, I think.
  12. Shirley Scott with Stanley Turrentine - The Dedication Series / Vol. 3: The Great Live Sessions (Impulse, 1978) Music originally released as Queen of the Organ -- plus a second LP of bonus cuts from the same 1964 gig.
