  1. Now: Last night:
  2. Still grooving to Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott: I'm with you, Justin. Edward Simon is an interesting musician. I'm jealous that you got to see him with Horizon!
  3. This Prestige CD combines two Gene Ammons LPs: Soul Summit (with Stitt & McDuff) and Soul Summit, Vol. 2 (with Etta Jones & McDuff) and with Jimmy Rowser & Mickey Tucker
  4. Sonny Rollins - This Is What I Do (Milestone, 2000) Outstanding latter-day Sonny -- especially "Did You See Harold Vick?" (!!!)
  5. That record isn't at all what you might expect, is it? So different than the rest of that band's music. Funny and interesting that Boland saved those tunes for Getz. I wonder what it would've sounded like if Johnny Griffin took a crack at them. Can't really imagine Jaws wanting to.
  6. And The Master sat on the shelf for seven years too. More weirdness from Big Red. ... For me, Sweet Rain is still a punch in the gut in the best possible way. And Dynasty too. Genesis has always been my fave -- but I need to pull out Coalition, give it spin. Haven't listened in a long while.
  7. Great story about finding your pathway into Ellington from two very different angles. Completely agree re: Dynasty. It was an immediate "Oh Wow!!!" for me too.
  8. Very sad news. R.I.P.
  9. Ugh. How horrible for both of them.
  10. Earlier: Blue Mitchell's self-titled Mainstream release is the topic of today's entry on my 70s jazz blog, PLAYING FAVORITES. Now:

  12. Graciela y Mario [Bauzá] - La Botánica (Lamp/Coco, 1977) Love this stuff!
  13. A double dose of Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott. Now: Earlier:

  17. Édouard Lalo: - Symphonie espagnole, Op. 21 / Paul Paray, Pierre Amoyal, Orchestre National de L'Opéra de Monte-Carlo; and - Concerto pour violoncelle / Charles Dutoit, Frédéric Lodéon, Philharmonia Orchestra
  18. LP 1 - Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15
  19. Now: Lester Young - "Prez" Vol. II (Pablo) Earlier: Elvin Jones - Genesis (Blue Note) Today's entry on my 70s blog is about Elvin's Genesis. Such a fantastic record! Another reason to like Dynavector cartridges is because they sound stinkin' fantastic. Even to a guy like me, whose hearing ain't what it used to be. A couple years ago, I put a 10X5 on my old Rega Planar 3 'table. Immediate GIGANTIC sonic improvement. Can't imagine ever trying another brand.
