  1. A few more:
  2. This odd, disembodied floating cat head makes me laugh.
  3. Jimmy Forrest with Shirley Scott - Heart of the Forrest (Palo Alto Jazz)
  4. I agree. I think Chico's cause is hurt by the fact that much of his best music is long unavailable. On India Navigation: Chico, Kings of Mali, Spirit Sensitive, The Outside Within. On Blackhawk: The Pied Piper. All (relatively speaking) hard to find. ... At least Freeman's Contemporary recordings are still in print. EDIT: In response to the Chico Freeman talk, I'm now playing: If I were to choose just one Chico Freeman record, it would be this one. Chico plays great -- and that rhythm section!
  5. Cecil McBee Sextet with Chico Freeman - Compassion (Enja) I have the Enja pressing of this LP. I also have the "sister disc," Music from the Source, on an Inner City LP. I suppose it's no surprise, but the Enja LP sounds SO MUCH better. Not even close. (And this comes from a guy with less-than-ideal hearing who prefers to forget about his audio gear and focus on the music.) ... Audio concerns aside, the music is superb -- on both LPs.
  6. Justin, I'm in the same boat as you. I've never seen Solal in person, and I likely never will. I understand that he's already semi-retired. He's one of my favorites -- so it's a bit of a bummer. ... I'm grateful for the recordings, at least. I will admit that I much prefer Solal's solo and small combo recordings to his large ensemble work. I have the Carlyne LP that you posted above (and others, like his Dodecaband Plays Ellington disc for Dreyfus), but they've never given me the electric jolt that his piano playing does. Just my personal response, of course. Now giving this another spin: Another one of Kloss' LPs from the Seventies that deserves to be reissued -- and likely never will be. "Dancers in Love"!
  7. Two by Mongo Santamaria: Fuego (Vaya, 1973) and Afro-Indio (Vaya, 1975)
  8. Alfredo Rodriguez - The Invasion Parade (Mack Avenue) and Trio Humair, Louiss, Ponty, Vol. 1 (Dreyfus)
  9. Lee Konitz & Michel Petrucciani - Toot Suite (Owl)
  10. Joanne Brackeen - "Fi-Fi Goes to Heaven" (Concord) Outstanding.
  11. Well worth the wait though! You're now awash in "new" music. Enjoy!
  12. Eric Kloss - Doors 1983 Muse LP reissue of a 1972 session originally released on Cobblestone. ... Good stuff.
  13. NP: Disc 2 - originally released as Sensación
  14. David Murray - Saxmen (Red Baron) Great. Hope you enjoy them.
  15. First spin of this new-to-me CD: Nicholas Payton - Sonic Trance (Warner Bros, 2003) Really digging this, so far.
  16. If you're ever in town, it's worth a look.
  17. 2000 Legacy reissue with bonus tracks.
  18. Wax 'n' Facts in the Little Five Points neighborhood in Atlanta.
  19. Found these CDs today during a lunchtime record store run: - Kenny Barron Quintet - Concentric Circles (Blue Note) - Harold Danko - New Autumn (SteepleChase) - Harold Danko - Nightscapes (SteepleChase) - Chico Freeman Quintet with Arthur Blythe - Focus (Contemporary) - "Papa" Jo Jones - Jo Jones Special (Fresh Sound / Vanguard) -- with Lucky Thompson - Nicholas Payton - Sonic Trance (Warner Brothers) - Sarah Vaughan - I Love Brazil (Pablo) The bottoming-out of the CD market continues. I got all these at absurdly low prices, none more than $3.
  20. Eddie Harris - Greater Than the Sum of His Parts (32 Jazz / Atlantic) Disc 1 - originally two LPs: The In Sound and Mean Greens
