Berlioz: Les Troyens / Sir Colin Davis, Ben Heppner, Michelle DeYoung, London SO & Chorus, et al (LSO Live)
Just getting to know this new-to-me set. The only other recording of this opera with which I'm familiar is Davis' earlier recording on Philips.
The Jazztet - Moment to Moment (Soul Note, 1983)
Along with regulars Art Farmer, Benny Golson, and Curtis Fuller, this edition of the Jazztet includes Mickey Tucker, Ray Drummond, and Tootie Heath.
Right on!!!
The Essential Willie Nelson (RCA)
An excellent compilation from Willie's time at RCA, years before he vaulted to worldwide fame.
Willie Nelson - Always on My Mind (Columbia/Legacy)
David - Great list!
A couple you might consider adding:
W.E. Timner's Ellingtonia: The Recorded Music of Duke Ellington and His Sidemen.
A trove of useful info.
Mercer Ellington's Duke Ellington in Person: An Intimate Memoir.
Especially interesting since it's written from an insider's point of view. (Or at least as "inside" as anyone ever got with Ellington.)
And -- like EKE BBB -- I applaud your exclusion of Collier's and Teachout's biographies.
I really enjoy Perahia's Bach recordings. His approach may be too Romanticized for some listeners. But his playing strikes me as well-balanced between form and expression: a sort of happy medium or golden mean.
