    Al Cohn

I think Al Cohn's best work on Concord was as a sideman for Ross Tompkins on this LP: Ross Tompkins and Good Friends (1978) with Cohn, Monty Budwig, and Nick Ceroli Along with Cohn's muscular playing, Ceroli may be the difference-maker here. (Concord's house drummer, Jake Hanna, isn't one of my favorites.) Incidentally, this record was made right in the middle of Cohn's late-70s "purple patch" for Xanadu.

  4. More Monk: I love these recordings from the Five Spot with Johnny Griffin.

    Al Cohn

mjzee, I agree with you that Cohn's run on Concord was excellent. But I think the four LPs that Cohn made for Xanadu -- just before Concord -- were even better. - Play It Now (1975) - Al Cohn's America (1977) - Heavy Love - with Jimmy Rowles (1978) - No Problem (1980) Play It Now and Heavy Love are my favorites -- but all four of them are outstanding.
  6. Thelonious Monk - The Complete London Collection (Black Lion) Disc 2 - Trio tracks with Al McKibbon & Art Blakey
  7. Sonny Stitt - Blues for Duke (Muse, rec. 1975) with Barry Harris, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins One of the best Ellington tributes I've heard.
  8. Laurindo Almeida with Martin Ruderman (fl) and Salli Terri (vo) - Duets with Spanish Guitar (Angel) Works by various French & Brazilian composers Lovely. Yes sir! Yes sir No. 2!
  9. More Scriabin as performed by Zhukov:
  10. Scriabin: 24 Preludes, Op. 11 / Igor Zhukov (Turnabout / Melodiya)
  11. During my evening commute: Such evocative music.
  12. Solo piano tonight. John Coates, Jr. - In the Open Space (Omnisound, 2 LPs) and Duke Jordan - Midnight Moonlight (SteepleChase)
  13. The Albert Mangelsdorff Quartet - Never Let It End (MPS, 1970) with Heinz Sauer (ts, as), Günter Lenz (b), and Ralf Hübner (d) Outstanding!
  14. Sidney Bechet / Martial Solal - When a Soprano Meets a Piano (Inner City, rec. 1957)
  15. VERY cool. Thanks for sharing.
  16. Spinning this relatively-new-to-me LP again: John Coates, Jr. - After the Before (Omnisound, 1978) Coates was jazz's georgic poet.
  17. The Hampton Hawes Trio - The Séance (Contemporary / OJC) with Red Mitchell & Donald Bailey Brilliant. About as good as it gets piano-trio-wise, IMO.
