  1. Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for A Touch of the Blues. Regarding your inquiry with Enja: Yes, it would be wonderful to hear all of the recordings from both Plays the Blues and Black Glory in unedited form. Now listening to the "companion disc":
  2. Hmm. I'm not familiar with that record, soulpope. Maybe one to add to the list. Prompted by your Waldron-listening, I've cued up this one:
  3. Dizzy Gillespie - Odyssey: 1945 - 1952 (Savoy) Disc 3 On this election night, all I have to say is. . .
  4. Duke Ellington - At the Alhambra: Recorded in Paris, 1958 (Pablo)
  5. Willie "The Lion" Smith & Jo Jones - The Lion and the Tiger (Frémeaux) Disc 1
  6. Jascha Heifetz performs violin concertos by. . . Sibelius with Walter Hendl and the Chicago SO Prokofiev No. 2 with Charles Munch and the Boston SO, and Glazunov with Walter Hendl and the RCA Victor SO
  7. Duke Ellington - Up in Duke's Workshop (Pablo/OJC)
  8. James Moody - Moods (UpFront) Vinyl reissue of Running the Gamut (Scepter, 1965); with Thad Jones, Patti Bown, Reggie Workman & Tootie Heath
  9. Rooster, These two quartet records aren't recent -- they're about 20 years old -- but when I listen to Dave Douglas' records Magic Triangle and Leap of Faith, I always think of Ornette. Both records feature Douglas with Chris Potter, James Genus, and Ben Perowsky.
  10. I'm still in the thick of my James Moody kick. These two records are very different. But both are outstanding.
  11. That's desert-island music for this listener.
  12. That looks interesting. What do you think, soulpope?
  13. Next up: Don Sebesky - Giant Box (CTI)
  14. First spin of a new-to-me LP: Chico Hamilton - Chic, Chic, Chico (Impulse, 1965) Chico's music always has that texture -- regardless of instrumentation or chronology. BTW: I wonder why this record hasn't ever been reissued on CD. Or has it? (I don't see a CD entry in discogs.)
  15. Yep! Looking forward to hearing the record.
  16. During a lunchtime record store run, I picked up these LPs:
  17. Moravec's Chopin is amazing. I think that's one of the strongest recordings of the "Babi Yar," right up there with Kondrashin's. Rozhdestvensky's entire cycle is very interesting, I think. A unique perspective.
  18. Lots of interesting stuff there. Thanks for the heads-up, felser. As a Roland Hanna-ophile, I would definitely recommend Time for the Dancers. It's one of Hanna's finest trio records, imo. But don't expect it whack you over the head. It's subtle. But keep listening... after a few spins, it starts to reveal itself, until finally, "Wow!"
  19. Cal Tjader - Puttin' It Together (Fantasy, 1974)
  20. Count Basie -- with and without Sinatra:
  21. Just found this Clare Fischer LP today: Ralph Carmichael Presents the Multikeyboards of Clare Fischer - Love Is Surrender (Light, 1970) Weirdly unsettling. Also: Katia and Marielle Labèque - en Blanc et Noir: The Debussy Album (Philips)
  22. James Moody - Another Bag (Argo, 1962) James Moody - Hey! It's James Moody (Argo, 1960)
