  1. I'd like to hear the Hall Overton. I have the Gryce/Jordan on Signal and it comes with a booklet for the students. I have this music on the 2 LP set pictured below, reissued by Arista in the 70s: This set also includes Gryce's "Nica's Tempo" sides with Thelonious. These were also originally released on Signal.
  2. Last night, while listening to Steve Lacy/Mal Waldron recordings, I started reading this compilation of Steve Lacy interviews: Fascinating stuff! Lacy is wonderfully articulate.
  3. Helluva record! Along with Medina & Spiral, the best of the Land/Hutcherson collaborations, imho. But they're ALL great. Hey -- I reviewed that album for Down Beat back in '68 or '69, gave it ***1/2. IIRC drummer Donald Bailey plays harmonica on at least one track. Phew. Tough grader! I'd give it at least 4 stars. I guess I'm biased!
  4. Chico Freeman - "Undercurrent" from The Outside Within (India Navigation) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjGl3kBVrPY BTW: How can I embed a YT video in a post???
  5. Not "grim" at all! What's not to like about traditional music from New Orleans?!?!?!
  6. Helluva record! Along with Medina & Spiral, the best of the Land/Hutcherson collaborations, imho. But they're ALL great.
  7. John Carter and James Newton were also on Gramavision. EDIT: Just remembered: Bob Moses made a couple great records for Gramavision too.
  8. I enjoy Land's playing -- and the music in general -- on these two Timeless All Stars outings:
  9. Yes sir. Agree 100%.
  10. Sorry to hear this.
  11. YEAH. Good for you, xybert! I'm not even a Steve Coleman fan -- I'm not really familiar with his music -- but I'm glad that you're sticking up for him!!! Sheesh, a simple article about Steve Coleman -- and suddenly there's a big storm of HATE -- about the artist and the writer. Good grief, people!
  12. Hold on a second. Iyer didn't couch his statement about the importance of Coleman in absolute terms. It was a reference to how much Coleman meant to Iyer, not an attempt to diminish the importance of Coltrane. Look at the quote: Vijay Iyer, who once declared in JazzTimes magazine that Mr. Coleman was, for him, as important a figure as John Coltrane, someone who “has contributed an equal amount to the history of the music.” I don't have any problem with that statement because he's seems to be making it from a personal point of view, not as some sort of music historian.
  13. Anyone else looking forward to watching the NFL draft tonight? I'm hoping that the Falcons draft someone who can actually put pressure on opposing teams' quarterbacks. (What a novel concept!) Last year, we had the second fewest sacks and the worst 3rd down defense in the league. Ugh. I'm also interested in seeing who selects Todd Gurley. Since I went to the University of Georgia and follow the football program, I'd like to see him land with a good team.
  14. Listening to this right now... "Pulse" from Sam Rivers' album Waves: https://youtu.be/0a4eoJv2jaI
  15. Escaped from the office for a while at lunchtime and found this LP at a local shop: Clean as a whistle. 5 bucks.
  16. Just picked this up from the library: A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music by George E. Lewis
  17. Earlier this evening, I listened to Lew Tabackin's Rites of Pan, an Inner City LP:
  18. Yeah. Good stuff. The Mark Weinstein LP above reminded me of a more recent Weinstein recording that I've enjoyed: It's not really "avant-garde" -- but it does seem to echo that late-60's Blue Note "inside out" vibe. (Think Bobby Hutcherson or Andrew Hill.) The pianist, Aruán Ortiz, is especially impressive.
  19. This looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
  20. Just started reading this:
  21. It's O.K. Not on the same level as Hill Country Suite though. IMHO, of course.
  22. Pulled this LP out tonight after seeing it discussed on another thread:
  23. I agree 100% percent re: Jones' "Hill Country Suite." It's a gem. Plus, how can you go wrong with a George Mraz & Freddie Waits rhythm section?
  24. Keith Jarrett - El Juicio (The Judgment) Lee Konitz Nonet - Yes, Yes, Nonet
