  1. Prompted by an Eddie Harris post by @Kevin Bresnahan on another thread: I don't have any of EH's original Vee-Jay albums, only this 2-LP compilation.
  2. Chuck - I'm curious. Is the Hotsy Totsy Gang drawn from the ranks of Duke's and Cab Calloway's bands?
  3. Clara Haskil - Philips Recordings 1951-1960 Disc 2 - Robert Schumann: Kinderszenen; Waldszenen - Beethoven: Sonata No. 17 "Tempest"; Sonata No. 18 Haskil's playing reminds me of Géza Anda's (with whom she sometimes performed). Their styles are extremely transparent -- like looking through pure water.
  4. Now listening to the music originally released on the Revelation Records LP Secrets, as heard on this set: Carter is a superb instrumentalist -- but the thing that sets his music apart (for me, at least) are his skills as a composer. And I mean "composer" in both the traditional sense as well as the Wayne Shorter-articulated idea of improvisation-as-spontaneous-composition. . . . For all his ties with & comparisons to Ornette Coleman, John Carter has an artistic voice that strikes me as entirely his own. In other words: Phew! This is good stuff!
  5. Exactly. The photo is very similar. It's another view of the benches at Park Güell: Also, I think those are the spires of the Sagrada Familia silhouetted on the right. (Not certain though.)
  6. Yep. A few months ago, I picked up a U.S. version issued on Musical Heritage Society (MHS). I found it filed in the record shop's classical bins! As you say, though, it's excellent music, regardless of the packaging. NP: Geri Allen - The Nurturer (Blue Note, 1991) with Marcus Belgrave (tr & flhn), Kenny Garrett (as), Robert Hurst (b), Jeff Watts (d), and Eli Fountain (perc)
  7. Now playing: Voluptuous, über-Romantic performances of these Brahms chamber works. Superb!
  8. More Walter Norris: Walter Norris & Aladar Pege - Synchronicity (Enja, 1979) Last year, when I was in Barcelona's Park Güell (designed by Antoni Gaudi), I realized that this album's cover image was taken there. IIRC, I've read that the album was not well-received by critics. Proof that you can't trust 'em.
  9. John Hiatt - Crossing Muddy Waters (Vanguard, 2000)
  10. I always enjoy hearing Frank Strozier. Damn fine player.
  11. Now spinning: Walter Norris - Stepping on Cracks (Progressive, rec. 1978) with George Mraz (b) & Ronnie Bedford (d) 5 stars -- in spite that bland, bordering-on-cringey cover. Compare the cover design above with the same LP for the Japanese market, retitled A Child is Born. It features evocative cover art and an interesting photo of Norris on the flip side: Unlike the U.S. release, this Japanese version doesn't communicate utter indifference to presentation. IMO.
  12. Now listening to lieder by Johannes Brahms, as heard on this set: Les Introuvables de Christa Ludwig (EMI Classics, 4 CDs)
  13. Now listening to this set, courtesy of a very generous fellow forum member: John Carter & Bobby Bradford - Mosaic Select 36 Disc 1 😀
  14. Yep. As is the companion album, Music from the Source.
  15. I have a Jon Hendricks album titled Tell Me the Truth. He signed the back of the album sleeve (for a previous owner) as follows: A short jazz poem: "LISTEN!" Love, Jon Hendricks
  16. More Lou Donaldson: A solid compilation of Cadet tracks that focus on his soul-jazz side, rather than his bop roots.
  17. Next up: Lou Donaldson - Cosmos (Blue Note, 1971) with Leon Spencer, Melvin Sparks, Jerry Jemmott, Idris Muhammad, and others Outstanding soul jazz. Given the players (and Donaldson's use of the Varitone throughout), perhaps it's no surprise that the music sounds like more like Bob Porter-produced sides for Prestige than a Blue Note date.
  18. Now spinning: Cecil McBee Sextet with Chico Freeman - Compassion (Enja, 1979) Earlier today, this new (to me) LP was on my turntable: Shamek Farrah & Sonelius Smith - The World of the Children (Strata-East, 1977) Pure Pleasure reissue Trumpeter Joe Gardner plays on both of these wonderful LPs.
  19. Back to Rozhdestvensky's DSCH cycle: Symphony No. 13 Babi Yar
