Is it too early for a baseball hot stove Thread???

The Furcal deal strikes me as a gross overpayment. Furcal does not have a high OBP and no power , so offensively he's not exceptional. I can't see paying him $13Mil a year for production that is NOT exceptional. The Mets felt they were getting played by the agents for Molina & Hernandez, so they struck quickly and made the LoDuca deal. I like Omar Minaya's approach, he's aggressive and not that willing to be hornswaggled by a shifty agent. I think the Mets may be greatly improved over last year. Wow, Furcal gets $13 million a year. Higher than Jeff Kent, who's the Dodger's best hitter. (around $8.5 m) Didn't JD Drew get about $55 for 5 years? That makes Furcal, still the highest paid hitter. Glad it's not my money. Seems like a waste of money, for a team that won't win any playoff games. The Marlins are unloading their team. Who's left?? Is Mike Piazza still a Met? Or is LoDuca trade bait? -
What's also cool about this BMG deal is that you can send GIFTS at the $5.99 / CD rate with free shipping.

I'll probably get the Sidney Bechet and Andrew Hill Selects. (maybe the TRIOs too)

Sorry, Ray Charles: Friendship is no longer available. Sorry, Horace Silver: Silver's Blue is no longer available. Sorry, Art Blakey: Drum Suite is no longer available. These just dropped from my queue, so I wonder if it's because of the SONY copy protection re-call?

I saw the Art Blakey new arrival at the BMG site, then checked yourmusic.

November 12, 2005 latimes.com : Business E-mail story Print Most E-mailed Small Text SizeSmall Text Size Regular Text SizeRegular Text Size Large Text SizeLarge Text Size Change text size Sony BMG Pulls CD Anti-Piracy Software From Associated Press WASHINGTON — Stung by continuing criticism, Sony BMG Music Entertainment promised Friday to temporarily suspend making music CDs with anti-piracy technology that could leave computers vulnerable to hackers. The world's second-largest music label defended its right to prevent customers from illegally copying music but said it would halt manufacturing CDs with the "XCP" technology as a precautionary measure. "We also intend to reexamine all aspects of our content protection initiative to be sure that it continues to meet our goals of security and ease of consumer use," Sony said in a statement. The anti-piracy technology, which works only on Windows computers, prevents customers from making more than a few copies of the CD and from loading the CD's songs onto Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod portable music players. Some other music players, which recognize Microsoft's proprietary music format, would work. Sony's announcement came one day after security companies disclosed that hackers were distributing malicious programs over the Internet that exploited the anti-piracy technology's ability to avoid detection. Hackers discovered that they could effectively render their programs invisible by using names for computer files similar to the ones cloaked by the Sony technology. A senior official for the Department of Homeland Security cautioned entertainment companies against discouraging piracy in ways that also made computers vulnerable. Stewart Baker, the department's assistant secretary for policy, did not cite Sony by name in his remarks Thursday but described industry efforts to install hidden files on consumers' computers. "It's very important to remember that it's your intellectual property, it's not your computer," Baker said at a trade conference on piracy. "And in the pursuit of protection of intellectual property, it's important not to defeat or undermine the security measures that people need to adopt in these days." Sony's program is included on about 20 music titles, including releases by Van Zant and the Bad Plus. Security researchers have described Sony's technology as "spyware," saying that it is difficult to remove and that it transmits without warning details about what music is playing. They also say Sony's notice to consumers about the technology is inadequate. Sony executives have rejected the description of their technology as spyware. Some leading anti-virus companies updated their protective software this week to detect Sony's anti-piracy program, disable it and prevent it from reinstalling.

new artie shaw - super cheap Import Box
Tjazz replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This looks like the 10-CD Fats Waller set Fats Waller box I'll order it and see how it sounds. Sounds OK. Yeah, 10 CDs, no disorgraphy, no booklet. Green color box and green colored CDs. (not my favorite color) When I put the 1st CD in the computer to play, it listed the title as "Portrait Vol 2 - Old Plantation Disc#3 shows the titles from the HALL OF FAME (5-CD set). It was only $9.63 from caiman_com when I ordered earlier this month (plus shipping). Caiman_com -
I'll wait for the $6 specials.

I always think it takes about 6 months or a year for new releases to show up on y ourmusic.com (bmgmusic). Sooner, if the music doesn't sell.

Disallowing taping & trading is financial suicide

Doesn't have to be someone with a large collection of live recordings. The best example is I want to hip someone I know to an artist's music but they aren't convinced enough to buy a CD. I have five choices: (a) hang out with them and play the CD. This is not realistic because of distance, schedules, other things to do when you see someone, desire to listen alone, etc. (b) go to a live show. That's kind of pushing the person because it's expensive. Plus all the reasons above. © buy them an official CD. Costs me $. Only in certain relationships is gift-giving appropriate, etc. (d) burn them a copy of an official CD , but then I'm breaking the law. (e) give them a copy of an unofficial taped live show of the artist that the artist is cool with. Costs me next to nothing. Easy to do. There's no time obligation on my friend's part: if they don't like it they can just turn it off and say nothing to me. Nobody feels like their time or money got wasted. Another example: I learn about an artist and based on other people's opinions, they seem right up my alley, but I don't want to shell out any money without hearing a least 30 mins of their music. I can either download or seek out an unofficial tape of a live show , or I can get my hands on a bootleg of an official CD. I don't want to break the law or go against an artist's wishes (if they're still alive). So it's way more likely I become a fan of this artist if there are free easily-obtainable tapes available. Then once I'm a fan, I start spending money on their music on some kind of regular basis. They gained a long-term fan. ← You can also tell your 'friend' to borrow the CD from the library.
