Bol, Thanks for the info -- actually it was very helpful. I was thinking of getting the POCJ reissue but now I'm not so sure if it doesn't have improved sound. I guess I should have explained the wow and flutter better. The best way for me to describe it is a slight warble heard in the recording. To me the most prominent spot is in the first track on disc 2 of the Mosaic -- it can especially be heard in the piano sound. I love this session and was thinking of getting the Japanese POCJ reissue if it was taken from a different source with better sound (but I can live with the Mosaic - it really isn't that noticeable). Nonetheless, the Wilson Mosaic set is a fabulous set and one that I go back to a lot. I have over 25 Mosaics (including Selects) and it's in my top 5 favorites!!

I'm a bassist so I had to go for the Kelly/Chambers set first (I had most of this on single CD's so I was sitting on it until I heard it might go OOP and the sound was so much better). I just got my Kelly/Chambers set #1660 and my Atlantic NO set #3672. Can't wait to crack them open tonight after work!!

I was curious whether anyone out there has the Japanese Verve Reissue of Teddy Wilson's "For Quiet Lovers" CD and how the sound compares to the tracks on the Mosaic Set? The Mosaic set (the first tracks on CD 2) have a lot of wow and flutter because the surviving tape was dubbed from an LP (which is mentioned in the Mosaic booklet). Just wondering if the sound on the reissue is the same or comes from a different source??

I just ordered the Chambers/Kelly and the Atlantic New Orleans (which is going OOP soon). I was on the fence about the NO set but decided to pull the trigger on that one too!! I'm going over to New Orleans in May or June and thought it would get me in the mood!!! I'll pull the trigger on the Morgan/Shorter at the end of this month. Mosaic is making me go broke!! Actually, I've been using my gig money to pay for my Mosaic's -- I'll need to find more gigs!!!!!!!!

The Teddy Wilson set has become a favorite of mine!!

I don't remember the distortion being mentioned in the Wilson book but when I first got this set a while back, I talked to Scott at Mosaic about it and he said it was, unfortunately, in the source tape. Same with the distortion on, I think, Disc 3 track 1 of the Tristano Konitz Marsh set -- it's in the source tape.

As it turned out my Disc was defective ( ) and I exchanged it for a new one. This one sounds great!!! I wish I had the OOP Mosaic Set but I will have to make do with this excellent 2-CD set!!!!

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just finished Disc 5 of the Tristano, Konitz, Marsh -- just blew me away. What amazes me is how "modern" these guys sounded in the mid to late '50's. If I didn't know when these were recorded, I would have thought they were done just yesterday!!!! I'm definitely enjoying this set too!! Now on to Disc 6...

It was a strange trip and a wild ride -- better than at Disneyworld!!!

I love the Teddy Wison. It's swingin' piano, bass and drums at it's best. The best part for me, as a bassist, was the great range of bass players on the set. John Simmons, Aaron Bell, Al Lucas, Milt Hinton, Gene Ramey and Arvell Shaw are like the history of the bass. I don't have much with Arvell Shaw so that was a real treat. And then you have some fantastic drummers including Jo Jones. Whew!! There are a few sessions where the sound is slightly flawed, which has been discussed on the other thread, but overall I REALLY like this set. I think it will sadly go OOP soon too. Some say it's a lot of the same thing (piano trio) but that's just fine with me. It was kinda weird going straight from the Wilson into the Tristano, Konitz, Marsh -- it was like going down several different paths in music!!!!! It was weird BUT GREAT!!!

The Mosaic set is one of my favorites too!! Don't miss his latest CD "Up Jumped Spring" on Delmark with Brad Goode recorded in 2003. It smokes!!!

I bought the Teddy Wilson about a month ago thinking it would be the next one on the running low list. Then, of course, the Tristano, Konitz, Marsh hits the list instead and I had to have that. So I finished the Teddy Wison and went straight into the T, K, M... I'm OD'ing on these Mosaics!!!

I'm on Disc 4 and it keeps getting better and better!!! -- actually, all of it's been great but... Can't wait to check out Disc 5 next!!

Just received my Tristano, Konitz, Marsh. It's #4168. I'm on Disc 3 already -- Great stuff!!!

Don't get me wrong. I love these CD's. I could give a crap if the sound is on the source tape 'cause I agree -- just to be able to hear this music is a blessing!!!! But the sound I heard at first listen was similar to a factory mastering problem I've heard before -- I just wanted to check to see if anyone experienced the same problem. However, after closer listening maybe it is in the source tape. It don't matter 'cause this music is FANTASTIC!!! ...and man you guys are funny!!!!!

I have the Liberty version of Hubbard's "Goin' Up" -- maybe it's time to put up -- naw, I don't think I could part with it!!! Well, maybe for these kind of dollars...

JSnrgy -- Thanks for your quick reply!!! I REALLY appreciate it!!! Ariceffron -- the hiss is NOT apparent on the other 2 tunes from the same home recording session which is why I was questioning it. Also, there is NO mention of the hiss in the liner notes (I did read them) and YES I do know that these recordings were from 1952 so the sound isn't going to be perfect but... GEEZ, I was only asking a simple question...

I just purchased this West Coast Classic 2-CD Set -- "Gerry Mulligan Original Quartet with Chet Baker". I have a question for anyone else who has it. On disc 1, track 1, the song "Get Happy" I hear what , at first, I thought was a lot of tape hiss during the track. The hiss doesn't appear on any other songs on the CD from what I have heard thus far. Does anyone know whether this is in the original tape source or is this CD defective?? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Just picked this up at Borders (had a 10% off coupon). Haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing but from what I've heard it sounds great!!! Curtis sounds really nice on this one and I really like Brad Goode on Trumpet.

The Blue Mitchell box is one of my favorites. The Blue Note Mosaic's are must have's IMHO.

Another vote for Black Stars!! Although my favorite is an "old" new release -- Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships" -- the best CD I've heard in years!!

Just picked this one up myself. The sounds a little rough but what a great historical document!! And I like the look of the CD cover, etc. (loved the "new" Andrew Hill "Passing Ships" cover too) -- classic Blue Note!! Would have loved to be in the audience for this one (I wasn't even born yet!!). Listen to Tommy Potters bass on the first sessions -- great sound for 1951 -- smokin'!!

Three weeks ago, I walked into a local used CD store and found a used but mint copy of the Tyrone Washington TOCJ for $7.99 along with John Patton's Memphis to New York Spirit for $7.99 and McCoy Tyner's Assante (sealed) for $9.99. I think my hands were shaking as I walked to the cash register!!!! It was like xmas in September!!
