I remember Billy in the Family Circus mentioned Dick Hyman in a cartoon about his father’s piano playing.

I met Bil Keane at the Atlanta Jazz Party one year. He was a big swing fan.

I recall a Family Circus in which one of the young brood informs a sibling that Dad is listening to "Big Spider Beck."

Thirteen year old me got this record when it came out-I had listened to it for many years before I started coming across the received critical wisdom that to some extent still colors the general perception of this release. My experience with this record was quite different than that of the critics...of course I was thirteen-what did I know?

David Hajdu has an essay in which he suggests that Eckstine was sort of black-listed  because of his attractiveness to to  young white girls.  I like Hajdu but he's not one to let nuance get in the way of a good story.

While I am not qualified in any way to discuss the veracity of this statement, I do have a frivolous anecdotal observation.  My mother, born in 1920, never seemed to care for Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, but really loved Mr. B.  I had the pleasure of taking her to see Mr. B with Count Basie when I was a sprout, and his was the only music that she would request by name.

  4. In his Smithsonian interview Buddy Defranco states that when he and Dodo first started playing together, in Johnnie "Scat" Davis's band, Dodo was 14.  I can only imagine that starting out so young as a full-time traveling musician could very well have a deleterious effect on one's development.

Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis with Shirley Scott Smokin’

    cd from this box set:

Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis - tenor saxophone
    Shirley Scott - organ
Jerome Richardson - baritone saxophone, flute, tenor saxophone
    George Duvivier - bass
    Arthur Edgehill - drums

I too am listening to this nice set further encouraged to do so by (much appreciated) Organissimo contributors and by a quote I came across in a Henry Threadgill interview:

Eddie Lockjaw Davis, I have to say, is probably the most original saxophone player I ever heard in my life. I’ve listened to all the different saxophone players, but I’ve never heard anyone play the saxophone like that. It’s the most convoluted style of playing that I ever heard in my life. You can hear a lot of players emulate Charlie Parker, Coltrane, all kinds of players. I’ve never heard anyone that can emulate this man, or anyone who can approach the saxophone in this way. It’s a strange style of playing, and the harmonic language is very different. His way of formulating sound on the instrument is extremely different; I don’t know what that was about. If you listen to Eddie Lockjaw Davis (most people haven’t listened to him, I don’t think), you will see that the notes don’t come out of the saxophone the way they do when other people play the saxophone. It’s very convoluted. It’s the most original thing I ever heard in my life. The most original.

  6. I received my set with no email or other notification Wednesday.  The only duplication for me was some Lester Young from Carnegie Blues.  I am finding much to like:  Hank Jones, Willie Smith, Benny Carter, J. J. Johnson, Buddy Defranco, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, and Lester in various small group settings.  My impression after rolling though a bit of this set is there are a lot of drum solos and single note rides, but overall it is a very likeable collection.

I do think it would be wise to just email them a query about a shipping date and nudge them to look for your order.

    Hello.

I too preordered on the first day using Paypal and have heard nothing from Mosaic.  I followed your advice and hope this gets that box rolling my way.

    thank you,

    jd
