  2. He might end up as a higher-paid Dodger, for that matter.
  3. The story here is that the club approached Maddux with an offer for an extension, Maddux then let the club know that he might be entertaining offers from other clubs, either as pitching coach or, as seems to be his ultimate goal, manager. The club then decided to be proactive about not being left holding the bag and having to scramble for a replacement. There's gotta be more to it than that, like, :change of scenery" and/or "fresh start" or something, but I've heard nothing about any deep divide, hostility, or anything. Maddux has been here a good while and done some good things. When you watch many/most/all games, there are things that seem like bullpen mismanagement/etc. that the hyper-fans go all balistic about, and maybe, occasionally....but not really. That's kind of a micro focus on what has been a very good cumulative macro effort. And the reality is that bullpens can be a little squirrelly, on any given day, cumulative results are what matters. This team used to be infamous as having no pitching at all. Hell, even in 2011, the more ignurnt of the national press who commentated just to be commentating were still throwing that line out there. So, I'm like, you know, don't try to bluff Jon Daniels, that ain't gonna work, that guy sees your plan and raises you his direction. But as far as anythng really bad-bloody, I don't think so.
  4. Mike Maddux the Nationals' new pitching coach, eh? Interesting, and if Dusty's real problems have been with managing a staff, an excellent one, Get ready for the shoulder rub!

  7. Hendricks came up as a tenor player, so he got it, the phrasing and articulation thing, ghosting notes and all that. And he had a viewpoint with his lyrics, not jut all We All God's Hip Chillun, something that has begrudgingly come to bug me about Eddie Jefferson over the years, and it pains me to see this happening to me, because, you know I used to LOVE me some Eddie Jefferson, those Muse records would come on the radio, UP goes the volume. Same thing with Paper Moon with Dexter, that countdown thing, yeah, that was hip as shit back in the day. But you know, like the folks warned, what is hip today, etc. But John Hendricks, as lyricist, he had a silly zone that he spent a lot of time in, but that's not because he didn't have any other place to live, ok?
  8. To the left of the forum title, there's an oval with quote balloons that will be dark if there's new content.
  9. Legs meet, not moot.

  11. Maybe Bud Black's an asshole, I don't know. What I do know is that nobody's been talking about a San Diego Miracle or anything like that, right? At least not in baseball.
  12. I like songs about legs. Close enough? There's always the thing with, which did you know first, the vocal or the solo? And usually, once you hear the solo, the vocal is less cool. Not always, though. This one, for me, yeahyeahyeah I get that it's corny, but hell, it's a song about legs and there are no lies told in the process. Problem, officer?

  14. As I'm hearing it, Bud Black was the Nats' first choice, but they ferociously lowballed him on the offer and he got really fuquitous about it.

  16. No, it'd still be scored 5-3, but the cool thing about a scorecard is that if you saw the game, you can kinda replay it in your mind, visually, from readding it. Just wondered if anybody's been known to have a system where 5-3 shows where the 3B was if it's some mega-shift. Of course odds now are silly, but still amusing. Might be interesting to compare what they are now to waht they are on opening day, see what the betting community thanks of the various roster moves that will undoubtedly transpire. I've not kept a scorecard in 20+ years...is that becoming a lost art/craft/fetish/whatever? When I was a kid, hell, I'd keep one for a radio game sometimes, just to do it.

  19. Dusty Baker just hired as Nats manager! Mike Maddux not returning as Rangers' pitching coach, brother Greg no longer servings as special consultant, All them Madduxes can now be yours! Shifts - short term gimmick or the future of defense? Shifts and Scorecards - how do you mark a 5-3 putout when the third baseman is playing on the other side of second base? Scorecards - does anybody still keep them? When was the last time you did? All this and more, the first batch of logs are now lit.

  21. Speaking of people named Collins, whatever happened to Tim Collins, the really short pitcher for the Royals who had the old school high HIGH leg kick? I used to look forward to that guy coming in against us just because that leg kick was so cool. Oh, TJ surgery...shoulda looked that up first before asking...anyway, good luck to Tim Collins too!
  22. Yeah, that Conforto guy, I liked what I saw of him, Seemed to have his head in the game at all times. Like Roughned Odor, acting like he belonged there. Good luck to him! Also, good luck to Familia, glad to hear that he's not getting heat, he seems to be a fine talent, and other than the HR to Gordon in Game 1, seemed (limited exposure here, of course) not at all a bad closer when used as such (i.e. - don't ask him to be closer and spot reliever at the same time!). I saw Neftali Feliz more or less ruined by "perception" and its aftermath. You don't wish that on anybody, especially a kid who comes from not much and gets a shot at getting a lot. It's just sad. Sad and ugly. Good luck to Neftali Feliz. As for what the manager saying goes no matter how intense the pleading, as far as I know, that's still in effect in at least some places! Ron Washington repeatedly had to deal with C.J. Wilson's pleadings, and the only time Wash let him stay was when he had a CGO or something on the line. and then, as soon as that was off the table, out came the hook. Other than that, once the call was made, that was that, and if you don't like the game being won, hey, we need to have another talk, this one in my office. Colby even made the plea once or twice, and you know, Colby is a freakin' Go To Work guy who will be the last person to question what his job at any given moment is so if Colby pleads, you figure it's gotta be meaningful. But no, once Wash made the call, the call was made.. I feel for Collins, though, I really do. It seems to have been an act of love, really, love for his guy's heart and love for what he had done up to that point. But in some situations, it's Tina Turner time, if you know what I mean. But good luck to Terry Collins, and good luck to future Mets. Stay Mets-y! And now that it's all over, I gotta get this out - d'Arnaud peering up at every batter before giving his signals was funny as hell, d'Arnaud always touching his penisial area after giving said signals was just kinda creepy. Optics, baby, optics!
  23. Dude, I don't know who these pundits and such are, probably on ESPN or behind somebody's paywall? But how can you not like baseball and not like the Royals? They just fucking play baseball well, what is not to like about that? Singles maybe not sexy, but winning sure is. Stay sexy Royals, just don't turn into the Cardinals about it.
