Quiet as it was kept, Cavett's house band for his late-60s/early 70s NYC show was probably the best of the bunch...George Duvivier, Eddie Daniels, Bill Watrous, I forget who else,. Bobby Rosengarden, of course, the leader...but it was a tasty, swinging outfit that didn't go in for all the flagwavers and pyrotechnics of the other talk show bands. Don't think they ever recorded, though, too bad.

Speaking strictly in terms of "danger". Ass-kissing sentimentality (which certainly got worse as the years went by) is a danger if its own, especially when mixed with throbbing veins int he temple.

One time Rickles was performing and singled out someone of Arabic descent (a fellow 'Semite', if you think about it). He ribbed the guy all show long. Then, at the end, he made a sincere brotherhood speech and said 'ladies and gentlemen, there's a gentleman here of Arabic descent, and I've been giving him hell all night. He's been such a good sport I think he should get up and take a bow'. Guy stands up. Smiles. Applause. 'GET THE ROPE!!' I loved Rickles in his prime. In some ways even more "dangerous" than Bruce. But I'm feeling a little uneasy, because this board is usually not field for "Rickles-esue" humor, and I can understand why. So, I'm gonna quit while I'm behind, go watch that ballgame, maybe pull this one out before bed: and remember back to those mid-60s late-nite spots, mostly on Carson...I don't know that that stuff would even get on today!
