  1. Right, but I think that at the time of the PJ era he was on Slingerland.
  2. The Toastettes. De-LISH-us!
  3. Who was June Taylor anyway?
  4. Yep. In what context did you post the link, pro or con?
  5. Oh... I thought is was something in the photo. Hey, "Sulky Serenade" seems like a dandy title to me...for something...didn't cause me a moment's pause.
  6. She's "middlebrow" in a world that no longer recognizes such, much less knows what to do it.
  7. Can ya' help a slow-witted bruther out on this one, Dan?
  8. The YouTube comments say George Carlin & Buddy Greco. "Away We Go" was a CBS summer replacement show for The Jackie Gleason Show. Buddy's was the house band, and as I understand it, they were a prominent part of the show, not just backing guests, but also having their own features & production numbers, such as this one, with the June Taylor Dancers. A lot of material on The New One (my favorite BR PJ) seems to have been written for use on this show. I have no recollection of this show, but then again I was 11 in the summer of 1967 and might not have been paying attention.
  9. Does Lord list a location and/or a show name? And for that matter, who is the pianist?
  10. One of the MySpace clips does have Murray on it.
  11. Allow me to call attention to Buddy behind the piano solo. In 1965, he had already figured out how to play "rock" rhythm in a jazz band in a way that swung. All the endless Sons Of Sidewinder weren't barely being thought of yet, not in 1965, it was still new then, and here this cat is, this vet of Dorsey & Shaw & loads of other stuff, doing it right, no questions asked. Kudos! As far as the altoist, could it be Quinn Davis? I know the bassist is Uncle Fester...ah, excuse me...Red Kelley.
  12. Demonic...yeah...that's about it. And try as I might.... I mean, this type stuff was right in there with the first jazz I got into back in 9th grade and shit, and some of it, like Maynard & Woody, I never got really bent out of shape over liking it, but Buddy...man, his shit "swings" but is in no way relaxed or otherwise conducive to what I want out of life, and therefore music. So for the longest, I avoided it, paid it its fullest props because it deserved it, but otherwise... And yet, just this weekend, I went out and bought two Buddy Rich PJ CDs, brought'em home, and was fascinated at what I heard. It might not be what I want out of life, but damn, there's some kind of primal power there, real power, and... I dunno.
  13. The execution doesn't do the writing justice.
  14. Well said. And ditto, although I understand the built-in disconnect in going into a "major retail outlet" that can't stay in business carrying the stuff that I don't already have & expecting to find stuff that I don't already have. But you know what else? Other than the employees, there's no young people in there any more. It's been about 3-5 years since I did the brick-and-mortar thing regularly, but these coupons prompted me to get out and go this week, and that's the first thing I noticed, no young people.
  15. Complete Vere Master Takes 3-disc set in a metal box. Oh, ok. Nah, I show no restraint when it come to buying Bird, so none of this "master takes" stuff for me. Seems fitting, somehow...
  16. Yeah, the 10. What metal box thingy are you talking about?
  17. Not necessarily to compare the two too deeply, but the same could be said about Monk, cumulatively, applying one type of "objective perspective". Trout Mask, Decals, and the later Virgin sides..."narrow", perhaps/probably, but also deep, if you have the inclination to go looking.
  18. Yeah, Firfox is fouled up, but IE displays correctly. Wierd that's it's just this one thread...
  19. There's also some Basie shows from that same set/format, so I gotta think that yeah, they are. But I've searched in vain to find out moreinfo. They were out on VHS, though, & are known as the "Swingtme videos". Since this thread is getting all the action, let me bring in it's orphaned cousin: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=41748 In 1965, it seems that the Harry James band was actually ahead of its time in handling "jazz-rock"!
  20. Dick Sargent Dick York Bobby Darrin
  21. ...this should be a LOT worse than it is. Check it out: Yeah, ok, I know, of course it is. But when it's NOT, hey, just some groovin' riffology designed to get the feets and asses moving, and I confess, it had me sitting here nodding my head and such in a non-casual manner. You gotta think that if catching a groove is THIS easy, then every motherfucker could do it. But the world shows us otherwise... Again, just a nice groove, and look at all those Typical White Folk dancing! And at the end, in the Gene Krupa Breakspot... BUDDY RICH'S HEAD EXPLODES AND SPEWS BLOOD ALL OVER EVERYBODY!!! I mean, hey, this is not at all a bad band...
  22. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFloJkNa-Rc...feature=related The electric piano solo (Wurlitzer, not Rhodes) is actually THERE, no small thanks to Buddy & Uncle Fester...
  23. That one was just weird. This one is kinda scary... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO9180bL_c8...feature=related
