I remember as a kid getting some older baseball cards from an older kid and seeing Lou Brock as a Cubs. Not even acid was that weird.

Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!
JSngry replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
Oh, I think we have a name...at least as far as who it is who should have raised a hand and insisted that they should check with Columbia, just to be sure, somebody who either didn't know enough or give a damn enough to raise that hand, somebody who was all very happy to be associated with it and now has not said anything that I've heard. That name I think we have. The name of the Columbia person who said oh yeah, really? let's see about that, then, we may never have, but honestly, I think they're kind of a hero, actually, because they did their job. -
When I die, I hope that the people around me notice that I am dead.

https://blog.discogs.com/en/thelonious-monk-palo-alto-zev-feldman/ So NOBODY thought to check with Columbia's legal first? Just as a matter of respect for possibilities? That's either hubris or ignorance, neither of which is acceptable for a project of this level. Cuscuna/Mosaic, when they talk about taking time to get shit fully cleared, they mean that it takes time, and you don't just "guess" or "assume". -
Not meaning to discount his experience, because I think he waas referring to his universtiy music school experience more than anything else (although he was the guest clinician at a freaking community college jazz clinic here in Plano a few years agou, ACK!), but looking at the language objectively, there are SO many "brown people" of ALL types ALL over Texas that I lol-ed at the "face value" reading of that. Hell, if not for the "brown people who ARE Texas, this place would be Wyoming or some weird shit like that. Crazy fascist oil owners and mega-ranchers. Fortunately, there more than enough more that just that! Having said that, though, the UNT experience was, is, and probably always will be (Kenton Hall!!!!) pretty tough to swallow for many types of people who come in from the "outside", and I fully hear what he is saying. But Texas...the demographics tell the story, and there are more than a few parts of the state that are VERY "brown". God bless Texas, in spite of itself. We just don't ever stop evolving.

How hard is it to be dead?

A life certainly not wasted! RIP!

Also interesting is the group sound of this band...very *west coast* in the more etherial way. It's one of those things that impresses me just for finding the space they found.
-
The originals are a mixed bag for Perkins', but the standards....I was taken aback simply by the spaces in 'his playing, just nut used to people taking breaths in those places and for those durations.

Yeah, that works!

What is the digital version coing to include interms of liner notes. etc.? For that matter, will the CD have the same stuff as the LP, only to scale? -
I think the biggest, most meaningful, reparation is to just get out of the way. "Everybody has a right to this music" is the biggest crock of bullshit since...all the other ones. What everybody has a right to do is to work to get to it, musical, socially, intellectually. "Playing well" should be just the beginning, Now it's a cause for celebration. Bullshit. Somebody once told me that the biggest impact that Wynton Marsalis had, bar none, was that he shifted the reality of jazz from it being a meritocracy to being a democracy, not in terms of public perception (yay, narrative!) but as far as the actual musicians themselves. So now, everybody has a right to this music. EVERYBODY. Call me cranky, but, you know, FUCK "everybody".

I'm thinking/hoping that he had insurance and maybe a pension because of his university position, and also did not have to suffer the indignity of playing endless exploitative and/or otherwise bullshit club gigs just to make a few survival bucks.

I think that might have been James Hardge himself? Oakland?

I just got around to the McKinley within the last 6 months or so, and copies are still not pricey. Just the existence of that set in that series is pure wonk. Much love here. -

I'm having to think that somebody at Columbia wanted to teach somebody a lesson about showing respect before going around them on a project with this sort of a profile. In other words, show the proper respect first. Kind of a mob type mentality, but hey, record business. Old habits never die. That it's all of a sudden "never mind, place you orders" like nothing happened...that's too weird and random to be anything else. -
40+ years ago, I was fighting an uphill battle to get people to pay attention to stuff like the Braxton/Max duets etc. because Braxton was too weird and Max was a bebop drummer, either Steve Gadd on one hand, Jack on the other, so I feel the pain, but 40 years (longer, really) is a lot of fixing to do, too much really. So rather than fix, just start over. AACM had a school, AACM knew better than to try to fix stuff that don't want to be fixed (if we're honest). Just start over, do it right, and don't get co-opted by "the system". Those guys only want to be your friend when it's to their advantage, like, to keep from being made extinct by reality. oh wait - AACM HAS a school, correct?

Hell yeah for those Savoy LPs then. You kids today, you have no idea how wonky those guys got towards the end of their run...i LOVED it and still do. 2 LPS of Ray McKinley post WWII bad, in loving detail. Maybe 7 people bought it new, maybe 6 more as cutouts, WONKY! And all those R&B things, more than any but the MOST deepcutters would be into. WONKY! Fuck that wankers, but LOVE the wonkers! -

Very feasible - but those are just names of companies. I want to know who the real people were playing these games. There will be names.
