    Nimbus records

i am thinking about placing an order with nimbus west and am wondering about a number of things... 1) has anybody ordered from www.nimbuswest.com recently or knows whether this works properly? is there another better option? (i do have paypal but don't have a credit card...) 2) what to buy... i already have dial b for barbra and nate morgan's journey into nigritia, i prefer small groups with some horn players and want to order about 3 cds, so the current plan would be something like Jesse Sharps - Sharps and Flats Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra - At IUCC Billie Harris - I want some water is this a wise choice or should i substitute/add, for instance, one of the following Adele Sebastian - Desert Fairy Princess Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra - Flight 17 Creative Arts Ensemble - One Step Out (how is this one?) Nate Morgan - Retribution, Reparation rather try Tapscott piano instead of Tapscott big band...
  5. well, what this thread did good is it reminded me to send birthday greetings to my chess playing friend yesterday on time for the first time in years... (that guy btw did his army service in the sports group of the army doing nothing but playing chess for a year) my brother btw hasn't lost a game of scrabble since he was 13... no idea what's so different in his playing but he always wins
  6. i hate losing and don't get much out of winning so that may explain my lack of interest in sports... ran into a guy from high school recently who does marathons and all, first thing he said when he saw me was by how many points i had been better than him in the final examinations (4 points which is almost nothing but apparently he still wasn't through with it eight years later) and then pretty much randomly changed the subject to running, explaining in detail by how many minutes some people we both knew were faster or slower than him... then without a question followed a detailed account of why his career as a professional tennis player had gone nowhere... it was pretty spooky
  7. Wan't that the German bank that was bailed out? Last Saturday - Kirk Lightsey at the local club with his trio. Kirk signed some CDs. i didn't follow all this as closely as i maybe should but apparently the hypo real estate bank that was bailed out is not part of hypovereinsbank anymore since 2003 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypo_Real_Estate
  8. the kids in my class played chess all the time but there was that one guy who was always winning and i figured out i'd have to put in a more than substantial amount of effort to beat him even once... just looked it up, he'd be in the top 30 if he immigrated to the US now so i guess i was right... strangely enough he did actually lose once against another guy who really wasn't too clever otherwise i walk 50 minutes a day to work and back home and take that as my excuse for not doing any sports in the near future, never did any organized sports because i was so bad at it it wasn't any fun...
  9. i know we don't qoute aaj over here but what about this "Not all Rare Groove CDs have "Rare Groove Series" in the inside spine. The earliest issues, such as my copy of Bobby Hutcherson's San Francisco, merely had a round "Rare Groove" sticker on the front." http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=12785
  10. ok let me risk the remaining 15% according to the list here http://www.organissimo.org/forum/lofiversi...php/t25095.html blues for lou was part of this batch of conns Series XI (1999) Grant Green – Blues for Lou Bobby Hutcherson – The Kicker Jimmy Smith – Six Views of the Blues Art Blakey – Drums Around The Corner Lou Donaldson – A Man with a Horn Dizzy Reece – Comin’ On Various Artists – The Lost Sessions
  11. strange, i would have thought blues for lou was a conn, and i am 85% sure, my copy of San Francisco is marked as a Rare Groove somehow... don't have it here...
  12. finally, stuff has begun to arrive in my mailbox after weeks of nothing Christian Escoude - At Duc Des Lombards (organ trio with Emmanuel Bex) John Dennis - New Piano Expressions Barney Wilen - Quintet with Hubert Fol
  13. well, i know who youmustbe is and i never paid close attention or googled him, just read some posts here and there
  14. She's probably right. I should think the typical sucker cuts his or her losses pretty quickly. MG read in an article that most of the (surprisingly many) scam victims tend to be relatively well-educated people (the medical profession was explicitly mentioned though i think they rather meant doctors than nurses) because only those have enough confidence in their judgement to begin a creepy endeavour like this... that this woman believes she has anything she can teach other people now shows that she is the typical sucker...
  15. here's a cool (unfortunately brief) sound clip of babik reinhardt with george arvanitas on organ http://www.djangostation.com/Swing-67,360.html

  17. did you know that every time i buy this sort of thing i think of you by now; you've posted this dozens of times and i agree it's so annoying there's not really a reason to stop posting... (ditto for the ethical divide between proper and lonehill) You know actually in most cases I am well aware beforehand of records that I now buy for only one or two tracks (because I WANT those tracks AND because those records are dirt cheap to begin with) but the ones I was thinking of within this thread are others: I.e. those records you once bought in your earlier collecting days and then, later on, you "upgraded" to other pressings/issues that are more comprehensive and more methodically organized and STILL when you do a track-by-track comparison you find there STILL are one or two tracks on this record that you DON'T have on others so you still cannot dump this LP and relegate it to the fleamarket/swap meet box (at least not until you've found those remaining tracks on other discs that fill this and other voids in a better way in your collection! Happened to me a couple of times last week when I brought home a huge stack of 2nd hand vinyl so the question came to mind here ... And no doubt it's a dilemma faced by many other collectors too. it definitely is a dilemma... the invention of the album has helped a bit though...

  19. if it's a monopoly you should be glad they reduce the price at all when it goes down elsewhere
  20. I am really having trouble getting into this Woody Shaw set. I got it on ebay recently, and while I occasionally find my foot tapping, the musicians are obviously talented, and it is undeniably funky at times, overall it is just wicked corny to my ears. I'm mid-first listen, so maybe it will improve, but I'm not thrilled. more discussion of this... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36922
  21. in the liner notes to one of the larry young prestige albums (groove street? could also be testifying) it is said he is was a cousin of larry

    Ray Crawford

got the candid album a few weeks ago, naturally, it is not like out of the cool (just like, say, round midnight isn't sketches of spain), but it is definitely worth getting... haven't heard katanga so far, but since the prices differ by about a factor of 10, i'd say the candid can't be too bad a starting point
  23. if there's anything i can do don't hesitate to pm...
  24. Nate Morgan - Journey into Nigritia Dadisi Komolafe - Hassan's Walk
  25. read those early stories recently, fascinating to see the same stuff puzzled together differently (thinking about it, this is one of two books i read in 2008... sad)
