    Twins in jazz

Art & Addison Farmer are the only jazz twins I can think of. Can anyone contribute? Thank you in advance (as they say).
  3. Had a thought about Harold Land's later sound. Mr. Land played oboe. Perhaps he changed to a double embouchure on tenor.

  5. Thank you, JSngry. You express yourself in writing so much better than I can. You completely got my points about Harold Land. Did Stéphane Grappelli get better over time. He annoyed me with the constant high harmonic cliche but eventually stopped overusing it (to a degree). He was so good to begin with I have trouble deciding.
  6. Thanks for posting this - a fascinating (I Got) Rhythm.
  7. Spend a little time here. http://www.hollywoodsaxophonequartet.com/ Two classical albums and two jazz albums. Fine music.
  8. I enjoy doing LP and 78 restoration with the computer. It can be amazing. I'm DLing the mp3s now.
  9. I learned a little. For me it was not a waste of time.
  10. I think it's simplistic to say Harold Land was influenced by John Coltrane. Harold was always a thinker and a serious responsible man. His playing became more complex but he never sounded like any Coltrane period. He did keep up to date. I'll say it again. I like his earlier tone. When I first heard his new sound I wondered if he had lost his teeth.
  11. Harold Land became more complex. He changed. Like with Benny Golson I preferred his earlier tone.
  12. Speaking of the first recording of "Passion Flower," performed by an Ellington small group. "I love the track but it seems others don't" WHAT! Impossible. The small group version can not be improved upon. If someone does not think this is great I don't want to know them or their clan. If you hate the saxophone it might be possible to not like this. Hope I'm not out of line.
  13. Don't see it posted so... Marjorie Hyams (1920-2012) has died. http://www.jazzwax.com/
  14. Stan Getz got better :-) Must be a funnier way to say that.
  15. Quincy Jones - Quintessence featuring Phil Woods Worth hearing again. I left my thoughts as a comment there.

    Gene Quill

I think we need another thread for where this topic has gone. I don't like Vic Dickenson's soloing in the 1940s with Lester Young but really like his playing in the 1950s. Ruby Braff improved with age (experience).
  17. Woods have been Philly cool if Lady Day had used May Day as a recording alias.

    Wardell Gray

Why Allen? I don't recall that being questioned before. There has been debate about some of the other participants.
  19. Well golly, Larry, the reviews are very favorable.

    Wardell Gray

Hello Gheorghe, I agree "The Happy Bird" has great Wardell Gray. I bought the LP when I was a kid and played it much. As a 14 year old I loved the part where the drummer tells his wife to shut up :-)

Doing the same thing...playing brilliantly on every recording...gee, that's terrible.

I'll look for Breezin'. The Mode is harmonically the same as "So What", Allen. Not much to read but easy to jump to the bridge early (once in your carrier):-) Perhaps he was wondering when they were going to break for lunch.

So Larry you got me listening to "The Mode". Barry's comping is not very varied (always closed voicing for instance) and he goes to the bridge early at about 4:27 :-) Just saying (not sure why). I mean I don't think it's his best recording date.

    RIP Alvin Alcorn

His friend said one had recently died. Never mind. I said I'd get it wrong :-)

    RIP Alvin Alcorn

funny. I always find a way to do something wrong the first time. Perhaps there were two musicians in New Orleans with the name Alvin Alcorn?
