  2. My something! What an awful piece of music. The recording did not help it sound better. No wonder Sal went back to Basie :-) He got his "Ho Down" lick in at the end :-) He plays that a lot on these You-Tube videos of the 1960s.
  3. It would be pointless...and misguided.

  5. about post #5 On "Kenny Dorham & Jackie Mclean - Inta Somethin" (1961) it's called "Us". Don't think this helps the discussion though. Of the versions I've heard this is my favorite. Is there a recording of Kenny's tenor sax playing?

    Bird's nest

Yes, thanks. I get the international edition in my email but this was not included.
  7. I appreciated Mtume's comments about electric instruments. For me, it was thought provoking. I'm a fan of acoustic music. His insights on Miles and his music were also of value. He was a part of it and has a very good mind.

    Lee Katzman

Irv Clark / Irv Rocklin keeps in touch with Lee. I believe Lee lives in Florida. Jay Corre might have info too.
  10. I enjoyed this when it first come out. Kenton's West Side Story http://www.amazon.com/Kentons-West-Side-Story-Kenton/dp/B000005GY4 But it does not make me "Kenton" fan. However I admit it would not have been produced without him. (might have even been better)
  11. Takes a moldy fig to know about "Yard Dog Mazurka" :-) I would gladly join a Gerald Wilson fan club. I've made a point of not collecting all of Kenton but on one hard drive I do have: Stan Kenton - Adventures In Blues 1961 Stan Kenton - Back To Balboa 1958 Stan Kenton - Balboa Bash 1941 Stan Kenton - Complete Capitol Recordings 1943-1947 Stan Kenton - Contemporary Concepts 1955-1956 Stan Kenton - Cuban Fire 1956 Stan Kenton - Eager Beaver Vol.4 1944 Stan Kenton - Etude for Saxophones, Vol.2, 1941-1942 Stan Kenton - Live At the Las Vegas Tropicana 1959 Stan Kenton - Painted Rhythm Vol.5 1944-1945 Stan Kenton - Portraits on Standards 1951 & 1954 Stan Kenton - Reed Rapture Vol.3, 1941-1943 Stan Kenton - Reunion Roast Stan Kenton - Sophisticated Approach 1961 Stan Kenton - Standards In Silhouette 1959 Stan Kenton - Unissued Capitol Recordings 1946-1965 Stan Kenton Mix plus, Chronological Classics: Stan Kenton 1945 Stan Kenton 1946 Stan Kenton 1947 Stan Kenton vol.2 1947 Stan Kenton 1950-1951 Stan Kenton 1951-1952 Stan Kenton 1952-1953
  12. I don't know. A friend of mine 'sees' numbers as colors. He can do fast four place multiplication, division, square roots 'in his head'.
  13. Alex is coming back to A'dam? What's that about? Business is better here than in Texas?
  14. Hello David, just noticed your post in my HSQ thread. I believe we met ~40 years ago. Barry Block. I have the four HSQ records. If you tell me which you don't have I can send you a link to the mp3s.

There is a new site about the HSQ.

  16. When I saw MSN I thought this won't be a good interview. As edited it is great! Some people have a clear mind. Sonny does.
  17. Do you ever read instructions on how to assemble something? Fake books are useful to get you started on a tune. A lead sheet can save you time and effort and put you on the right track. A good lead sheet respects the composer's intentions. It's a good place to start.

    Joe Henderson

Hello Michael Weiss. "Was that Laura Dreyer?" She was in the band, I believe. Back then I couldn't really hear her because I could not get beyond how "pretty" she was :-) She may have been one of Joe's students. We were not friends. Susie Lorraine was the band leader. She also plays sax and flute. She now does a lot of flute teaching I think.

    Joe Henderson

About 1982 Joe had some students in San Francisco. One was a friend of mine. She was playing tenor in a little bar on Columbus (Ray's Cafe) and Joe was playing piano for her when I came by. They were playing a Monk tune and I was so surprised how well Joe was playing Monk's style! The voicings and the phrasing. The way Monk would play a chord and let some of the notes linger after stopping others. Joe was deep.
  20. I've known and played with M Moore since 1972 in Eureka, Ca. We both live in Amsterdam, NL now. He is a great player and person. I'm not :-)
  21. There are a lot of accomplished people with the name Michael Moore.
  22. Glad to see someone mention Michael Moore. He is great. I'd like to mention Albert Nicholas. His body of work is very impressive. Pete Fountain will always have a place in my heart. Jimmy Hamilton should get more credit as should Barney Bigard. Russell Procope's playing was very effective. Buster Bailey was also very effective with John Kirby. Peanuts Hucko did some fine work. The Most brothers, Sam and Abe, could do most anything. So many others... I guess right now I don't have a favorite.

Was it Jerry Southern in Downbeat that told how embarrassing in was for Mr. Amy in the army where in roll-call the names are reversed.
