  1. Hey, how about October 23, 1970? Or October 23 in general? Besides my mom's spontaneous composition of the time-- more of a dirge, I think
  2. I've been using Music Collector for quite a while now. I recommend it... but I was curious if there was something that catered more to the needs of a jazz collector, who is often interested in the kinds of details that many pop/rock/mainstream collectors are not... I have heard a lot about the Beyond Category software from a few erudite jazzfans-- does it offer some particularly compelling features? What do Classical collectors tend to use? Seems like they are often as obsessive as we are
  3. What is the best software for maintaining a catalog/database of CDs and LPs? I have been using Music Collector, relatively happily, for a while. But should I be looking at Beyond Category? Others? Any specifically made for (or well suited to) jazz collections where interest in sideman appearances, multiple versions of the same song, etc. is high?
  4. Did anyone else get a columbia house one-day sale offer for today? Buy one, get one free and the rest at 2.99 or something. I deleted mine then remembered I had some items in my cart there waiting for a better sale. Anyone have a link? When I login, I'm not getting that sale...

    Bernie Williams?

  6. Just by happenstance I picked this up a few weeks ago and I really got into it. Now I've decided that I need to add more Jamal to my collection, so this thread is helpful and sad at the same time. I'm hesitant to buy vinyl unless I can physically get my hands on it first, and knowing how much is out there that is basically unavailable is frustrating. Such is the life of a jazz listener, I guess.
  7. I have 1. a sealed copy of Kind of Blue, Columbia Super Bit Mapped edition and 2. a used Money Jungle (TOCJ-6247) -- no OBI thingamajig 3. Three sealed *cassettes*: Ahmad Jamal "Chicago Revisited: Live at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase", Oscar Peterson Trio "Saturday Night at the Blue Note", and Oscar Peterson Trio "Last Call at the Blue Note" I'd be interested in trading for basically anything I don't own (already have the CDs and don't have a cassette player!) -- my taste leans heavily towards bop/hard-bop, mid 50's to late 60's. And if no one has a trade I'll probably just give them away-- I just want to give them to someone who will listen to them (which is basically no one I know)!
  8. Besides the movie "Swing Kids" (which I haven't seen, but don't think I want to), are there any good books/documentaries/etc about jazz in Nazi Germany? The brief entry in the Ken Burns Jazz book was compelling, particularly the photo of the inmate jazz band performing at one of the concentration camps.
  9. Actually, I'm not buying them just for the investment-- but I have limited dollars and see some interesting stuff that is both Select and not-- so I don't see the harm in figuring which one is likely to retain its value. But in the end, I'm buying for the music (else I'd buy a lot more Mosaic boxes, as they have a better return for the dollar than my bank account appears to
  10. It seems pretty clear that the regular Mosaic boxes are a decent investment-- I don't think I've ever seen one sell for less than the retail purchase price, and usually much much more. Do the numbered Mosaic selects have that kind of upside? I am curious why they bother with a numbered set if they are going to sell retail anyway... is there some pre-determined lifespan for the retail sales?

    Erroll Garner

I was commenting to a friend that I was really enjoying Erroll Garner's "Concert by the Sea" album and he referred to the disc as "cheesy". I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but it's not what I am hearing! So what are some good albums to explore more of Garner? The complete Savoy master takes looks interesting, but maybe there are some more cohesive sets out there...
  12. I don't see the CD going anywhere, though I think SACD will continue to grow-- slowly. MP3 will remain big in the portable consumer market, and even in the home audio market I bet, since "kids these days" tend to get crappy MP3s and burn CDs with them and be quite happy... Digital serving is a fine idea, but if I am going to invest in something like that, I want quality. And quality means uncompressed. And uncompressed, or at least lossless compression, means that even a 960gb model isn't going to be big enough for my collection soon, and I am not the obsessive many other people are-- and have to be to invest that kind of money! I do serious listening on my home hi-fi system (well, mid-fi-- total cost was under 5000 for the system), active listening on a sony MP3 CD player or a Nomad RIO mp3 player, and hi-fi portable with a sony cdp, dedicated amp, and etys. I'm still trying to save enough to afford a decent turntable and then I can listen to some of the vinyl I've picked up here and there...
  13. Excellent-- thank for the tip. This is precisely what I am looking for. I still think more jazz artists should embrace taping, but hey-- that's just me, deprived of live jazz!
  14. Which is the better way to spend around $20 to get some Lester Young: The Complete Aladdin Sessions or the Proper Box set: Lester Young Story??
  15. I wish I'd seen this thread before I wasted money on St. Anger. I don't DEMAND guitar solos, but they would make things more interesting, and Hammett is usually interesting to listen to. Hetfield sounds like crap, the recordings sound like crap... ARGH. I sure am glad it came with a DVD so I can WATCH them sucking. On the other hand, the new Ben Folds Live cd/dvd is fantastic!
  16. I wonder why more jazz artists are not on the taping/trading bandwagon that seems to benefit the jamband scene so well? Of all musical genres that deserve to be recorded and archived, jazz-- with its emphasis on improvisation and creativity-- seems like a natural. It is a minor travesty that one can access practically every show phish and string cheese incident have ever recorded, right down to "sounds recorded while a two-day replacement guitarist was in the john", etc... but so many great jazz performances come and go with no documentation at all. I would think the phenomenon of tape trading would really benefit jazz musicians. In the final accounting, I would suspect it would really benefit the artists, since traders tend to be folks who own all the commercial releases and obsessively search for MORE...

    Jelly Roll?

Excellent, I'll order it this weekend... gee that was easy

    Jelly Roll?

Where to get started with some Jelly Roll Morton recordings? Is there a good representative set for Morton like the Hot Fives and Sevens is for Louis Armstrong?
  19. Bumping this because I finally had time to finish this book and it was a great read. Very poetic, very "jazz feeling" stories-- and he pulled no punches. Makes me wonder where the lines of fact and fiction were drawn in each case. A very cogent and interesting essay afterwards too. I'm off to see what else Goeff Dyer has written-- anyone know if he has other good jazz writing?
  20. I haven't seen a thread dedicated to sales, deals, coupons, etc... not that I have any to report, but maybe somone else does? Any cool coupons, discounts, sales, etc ? Anyone know where the best place would be to pick up some of the newer RVGs? Oh, I guess half.com has a $1 off any items you purchase that are on your wishlist-- but they have to be on your wishlist already. Code 'wishlist'
  21. Well, this is good news. I was a huge GnR fan when I was younger-- and I'm still a big STP fan. So it sounds like you are hinting that Izzy Stradlin is recording with them but won't be touring? I'm looking forward to hearing their music-- none of the Guns' solo efforts have been very impressive, but I continue to be a sucker enough to keep buying them!
  22. Well, WELL worth it. As others have said, plan to make a day of it. I only had about five hours and know I could have spent a couple of days there! The exhibits are quite rich, and the special exhibit area had a particularly fascinating display at the time (who knows what is there now). I have to admit I teared up a few times, most notably at the Hendrix display.
  23. (I don't know how I posted here-- I thought I was in the "recommendations" forum-- maybe an admin could move it?) Thanks for the suggestions on CDs useful for hearing the standards. I don't know enough to argue about jazz based on standards and new jazz, etc. But I do know that my primary listening interest at this time, jazz from the late 40s-late 60s definitely is based on, borrows from, or quotes the standards, so for this listener, at least, the time is well spent. It's not turning it into a chore, for me, to find a way to more deeply understand the music I love...
  24. Are there collections of "standards" in which the pieces are played in a relatively straightforward, original manner that would be useful as a jazz listener to become more familiar with where their music is coming from? I am thinking in two ways here. First, of course, are the jazz versions of standards like Coltrane's "My Favorite Things"-- I was telling my daughter that this was an old song and she asked to hear the "original"... which I don't have! The second is that I often hear people describe a musician's songs as being an outgrowth of standards. So, Parker's "Moose the Mooche" uses the "I Got Rhythm" chord changes, etc... It seems like it would be useful to have a better exposure to these standards!
  25. I don't agree that the bias in most standardized tests is significant enough to matter. The real problem is the whole concept of standardized tests and what is really being tested. And of course the fairly recent University of CA study which showed that SATs are one of the least efficient predictors of college success. A real 1600 on the SAT is pretty cool, especially if it was before the mid-90s when they changed the scoring system. Less than 1000 out of close to 1.5 million get a 1600 each year. I "only" got a 1540, though that would be a 1600 in today's terms
