  1. Curious if anyone has any of these LP collections. Curiously, they list song titles and composers, but not artists. I am told that this series is stylistically compiled, but on the volumes I've seen there is no clear indication. Can anyone describe what the various volumes sound like?
  2. from http://www.savd.com.au/may_2008nr.htm NAXOS CD OF THE MONTH| 8570241 | CD | 747313024179 Antill Corroboree, Outback Adventure New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, James Judd (conductor) Thrilling new recording of Australian orchestral classic, brimming with energy and excitement World-class performance by highly-respected orchestra First digital recording - beautifully engineered, this is a stunning disc This recording was initiated in Australia as an important addition to the Naxos catalogue Includes informative notes on the composer and the music Australian composer John Antill is best remembered for his exuberant, outstandingly successful and ever-popular ballet Corroboree. Drawing on material Antill notated in 1913 at a corroboree in Botany Bay and on his subsequent research on Aboriginal music, Corroboree is a landmark in Australian music history. Antill’s Outback Overture is a charming concert opener, combining Stravinsky’s rhythmic energy, British folk melodies, Copland’s harmonic influence and Grainger’s humour.
  3. I wonder if there's ever been anyone on the planet who has made a point of purchasing all of the "essental" whatevers from any published list. It would make funny Onion article: Financial Planner Buys All One Hundred Essential Jazz Albums."
  4. This is exactly the kind of conversation I was hoping to spark! Thanks all for the input.
  5. This is a new recording, and to my knowledge only the second recording of the full ballet (the first was a 70s recording on EMI which fetches big bucks). I believe this new recording has been issued only on Naxos Australia and must be obtained as an import (for those outside of Australia). The most readily available version is the suite on Everest with Goossens conducting the LSO. It was paired with Ginastera's "Panambi" suite with an aboriginal mask on the LP cover. The CD release combines two albums with Villa-Lobos' "Little Train" the primary focus of the cover art. "Corroboree" is essential if you like orchestral primitivism along the lines of "Rite of Spring," "Scythian Suite," "La Noche de la Mayas," etc.
  6. LOVE Chico O'Farrill! That Art Farmer guy he hired to play it is pretty good too. Where can I has coupon?
  7. I can has coupon?
  8. You mean AZTEC SWEET! I can has!
  9. MUST HAVE AZTEC SWWWWEEEET!
  10. I just found out that Naxos Australia has released a new full-length recording of Antill's ballet "Corroboree." Previously, a suite was available from the Everest label (recommended). I am hoping this gets worldwide distribution. This is an incredible piece of modern primitivism. Is anyone here a fan of the Everest recording?
  11. Thanks, as I suspected. The quality of the vinyl during the pink label period has the sound and feel of late 60s vinyl.
  12. Does anyone know the approximate years of the label designs? I have some that are dark green and black with white typeface. Others are pink and light green. Are the darker ones earlier?
  13. I have a bunch of soul jazz records owned by a dj named Goosby Jones. I've bought records blind because his name was scribbled on the back, and I knew they had to be good because he owned them.
  14. Who cares? It's the end result that counts, not the name of the primate involved.
  15. I wasn't meaning to knock the first two tunes; it's just that they don't feel related to the rest of the album to me.
  16. My recent thread about Johnny Mathis's first album got me thinking about this. I'd like to talk about singers who are generally considered pop singers who might have made one or two jazzy records in their career and surprised you with the results. Artists like Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Julie London and Peggy Lee don't really count, because even if you consider them pop singers, a substantial amount of their catalogs had some sort of jazz content or flavor. A few examples I'm thinking of: Johnny Mathis - First album (with Gil Evans, Teo Macero and John Lewis) and Open Fire, Two Guitars Patti Page - The East Side, The West Side (with Pete Rugolo) Jo Stafford - Jo + Jazz I've heard that Doris Day made a "jazz" record but I never heard it. Thoughts?
  17. THE DRUM SUITE IS KILLER! as is Jo+Jazz
  18. Brasil '66 - Look Around - A&M mustard label (stereo) "Like a Lover" and "So Many Stars" are killer tunes. Love Lani Hall!
  19. Joe Harnell - Bossa Now! - Columbia 2 eye stereo
  20. LOVE THIS. I have Indo Jazz Suite and my bro-in-law has Indo Jazz Fusions. I love jazz from this era with an eastern bent.
  21. There are certainly clean copies out there - I've amassed probably 8 or 10 titles over the years - but for the most part they're trashed.
  22. It's a good week if you can find ONE Ahmad Jamal in PLAYABLE condition. Why are those records always beat to hell? Were they party records back in the day?
  23. Terry Reid - Self Titled - Epic (yellow label stereo)
  24. Don Ellis - Electric Bath - Columbia 2 eye stereo
