  1. Alec Wilder Sketches the World's Most Beautiful Girls - Golden Crest (mono) As played by the New York Woodwind Quintet Longhair arrangements of standards titled with female names, along with some Wilder originals.
  2. Very sorry to hear this. I lost my dad years ago, so I can relate. It's nice that you had a musical bond too. My dad and I shared a lot of common musical tastes and I still have several of his LPs.
  3. Alfred Newman/Bernard Herrmann - The Egyptian - Decca (mono)
  4. Villa-Lobos: Quatuor and Noneto, Roger Wagner Chorale and the Concert Art Players, Capitol FDS dark green label, mono. This music is the missing link between Ravel and Les Baxter!
  5. I love this album. The first two tunes, IIRC, are straight ahead Basie and I remember feeling disappointed that it wasn't living up to its title. Then, at track three, it kicks in. Parts of it are in a very modal/groovy Gabor Szabo bag, albeit with big band. Aside from the first two tunes, this is my favorite Basie album.
  6. I had an LP of hers on Epic with arrangements by Tom Dissevelt, best known for his Kid Baltan electronic LPs on Philips. I unloaded it years back, but I remember liking her singing. Had no idea she was still alive or still performing.
  7. You should be. It has Florida written all over it.
  8. Are you thinking of "Afrique" on Flying Dutchman, with arrangements by Oliver Nelson?
  9. Have you ever noticed that the version of "Take the A Train" on here doesn't settle into a groove until about halfway through the tune? Amazing that this take was approved. I'm speaking of my copy, BTW. No idea if this was corrected in later pressings. I'm talking about the part where the whole band kicks in.
  10. I've heard that Sergio is doing all the classic 60s stuff. Should be good. Lani Hall is doing some select dates with Herb Alpert. They just played NY. Lani is also on Sergio's latest release. She is a very overlooked and underrated singer.
  11. Sergio Mendes is doing a brief US tour. Anyone going or has anyone seen him?
  12. Mambo Caravan - Machito, Joe Loco and Tito Puente - Tico mono
  13. Paul Desmond/Jim Hall - Take Ten - RCA mono
  14. I never knew Jonathan Winters recorded for Columbia.
  15. http://www.amazon.com/Johnny-Mathis/dp/B00...814&sr=1-95 I have seen a different cover for the LP also. Both are titled "Johnny Mathis."
  16. He comes off differently on the first album. If you ever have the chance to check it out, it's worth a listen.
  17. I hear you. But I've always felt that there are jazz singers, pop singers, and a bunch of singers between at various points on the spectrum. I think that pop singers with good intonation and a decent sense of swing - when given the right tunes, arrangements, and instrumental settings - can make very good and listenable "jazzy" records, even if they're not purely jazz (however we would define that).
  18. Was wondering if anyone here digs Johnny Mathis's first Columbia album. It has a decidedly jazz bent, with arrangements by Teo Macero and Gil Evans. I wish he would have gone in this direction. What a voice.
  19. Cal Tjader MUST be in my top ten of artists consistently in regular rotation. I have dozens of his albums on vinyl and about 10 on CD. This time of year especially. Coincidentally, I was listening yesterday to the Verve collection "More than Mambo" which has several CT cuts.
  20. I am tempted to pick up a cheap cowbell and some Blue Oyster Cult albums - readily available for 50c a throw at any number of thrift stores - and go wild.
  21. Sylvestre Mendez & su Tribu Afrocubana - Bembe Aragua - RCA black label, mono, Mexican pressing.
  22. Cyril Jackson - Afro Drums - Requests (stereo). The weather's heatin' up and I want it to sound like the jungle in here.
  23. That's sounds good. Any combo with vibes that does Mancini can't be bad. I'm also in a quartet with vibes, and we do some Les Baxter.
  24. He is also the only composer who scored films by Ingmar Bergman and Ed Wood! What have you done lately?
