I admire the fact that Lalo re-recorded this album a few years back when he couldn't license the LP masters, but this LP blows away the newer version, trust me.

Not long. And the fact that there were two competing, non-compatible quad formats didn't help matters.

When you play a stereo LP back in mono, it can either improve it, make no appreciable difference, or ruin the sound entirely. I imagine the same thing could occur playing a quad LP in stereo - or mono, for that matter.

I heard the SACD used the quad mix, but I haven't actually heard that release.

I don't have the time to compare either, but usually with rock/pop records, the mono differences are readily apparent, as they usually sound louder and punchier.

Apparently, quad styli are still being manufactured, and there is a loyal group of quad enthusiasts. There are also people who collect 8 tracks, and I don't get that either, though I have a few. That being said, some quad mixes are radically different, especially for albums that had lots of production and effects. For example, the quad mix of Pink Floyd's DSOTM is supposedly very different. There are completists who collect these for the differences, just as there are people who want to own a particular album in both stereo and mono. I'm just curious about how "Headhunters" sounds. BTW, I still haven't completely embraced stereo, and prefer most albums in mono.

Anyone ever heard this? I'm wondering if the mix is significantly different from the stereo, and how hard it is to find relative to other quad LPs.

Well, it may not be to your taste, but it creates a distinctive vibe with its use of baroque harmonies, flute, wordless female vocals and jazz backings. If you still have a copy, you may want to give it a spin just to see how it hits you several decades later. But if you don't like it, I'm sure you have no shortage of great stuff to listen to, and I respect your opinion.

Thanks for this; never knew it existed. Williams' own album of Checkmate is worth tracking down. Really superb arrangements.

Have not heard this soundtrack album but I'm happy with this Shelly Manne Contemporary: (with Conte Candoli, Richie Kamuca, Russ Freeman and Chuck Berghofer) Can't read the title. Is it Shelly's take on the "Checkmate" music? I have some of his "Peter Gunn" albums.

Forget Star Wars. This is the stuff you need to hear, right up there with "Peter Gunn" and the other memorable private eye jazz. Original 6-eye mono copy.

Agreed. The first album is significantly better in mono. Having the mono mix is less important for "Horizontal" or "Idea," and I like 60s pop/rock better in mono 99% of the time. Still, I love the longer fade on the mono version of "World," even though it falls apart at the end!

On a related note, Fred Katz's score for the original 1960 "Little Shop of Horrors" deserves to be reissued on CD. It came out on a Rhino LP in the 80s, and is well worth tracking down. This score seems to be a well-kept secret. It features that nervous, angular, dissonant, geometric jazz sound you hear in 1950s and 60s European soundtracks.
