  1. I heard the SACD used the quad mix, but I haven't actually heard that release.
  2. I don't have the time to compare either, but usually with rock/pop records, the mono differences are readily apparent, as they usually sound louder and punchier.
  3. Apparently, quad styli are still being manufactured, and there is a loyal group of quad enthusiasts. There are also people who collect 8 tracks, and I don't get that either, though I have a few. That being said, some quad mixes are radically different, especially for albums that had lots of production and effects. For example, the quad mix of Pink Floyd's DSOTM is supposedly very different. There are completists who collect these for the differences, just as there are people who want to own a particular album in both stereo and mono. I'm just curious about how "Headhunters" sounds. BTW, I still haven't completely embraced stereo, and prefer most albums in mono.
  4. Anyone ever heard this? I'm wondering if the mix is significantly different from the stereo, and how hard it is to find relative to other quad LPs.
  5. Well, it may not be to your taste, but it creates a distinctive vibe with its use of baroque harmonies, flute, wordless female vocals and jazz backings. If you still have a copy, you may want to give it a spin just to see how it hits you several decades later. But if you don't like it, I'm sure you have no shortage of great stuff to listen to, and I respect your opinion.
  6. Thanks for this; never knew it existed. Williams' own album of Checkmate is worth tracking down. Really superb arrangements.
  7. Have not heard this soundtrack album but I'm happy with this Shelly Manne Contemporary: (with Conte Candoli, Richie Kamuca, Russ Freeman and Chuck Berghofer) Can't read the title. Is it Shelly's take on the "Checkmate" music? I have some of his "Peter Gunn" albums.
  8. Forget Star Wars. This is the stuff you need to hear, right up there with "Peter Gunn" and the other memorable private eye jazz. Original 6-eye mono copy.
  9. I'm right there witcha! I'm happy to have found the ones that I have...
  10. Stravinsky, again, "Le Sacre du Printemps," this time by Antal Dorati & Minneapolis Symphony, Mercury Living Presence mono. Great cover art, too!
  11. Too bad. "Playboy", as we all know, was a very jazz-friendly publication back then.
  12. Agreed. The first album is significantly better in mono. Having the mono mix is less important for "Horizontal" or "Idea," and I like 60s pop/rock better in mono 99% of the time. Still, I love the longer fade on the mono version of "World," even though it falls apart at the end!
  13. a rechanneled stereo copy, but as with JB above, ya gotta be thankful when you find rekkids like this. And what a cover!
  14. stereo copy, unfortunately, but with JB vinyl you gotta be grateful for whatever you can find!
  15. Another, from Lancaster's character: "Sidney, conjugate me a verb; for instance--to promise. You promised to break up that romance."
  16. On a related note, Fred Katz's score for the original 1960 "Little Shop of Horrors" deserves to be reissued on CD. It came out on a Rhino LP in the 80s, and is well worth tracking down. This score seems to be a well-kept secret. It features that nervous, angular, dissonant, geometric jazz sound you hear in 1950s and 60s European soundtracks.
  17. Oscar Brown, Jr. - Tells it Like it Is - Columbia, mono
  18. Yes, Chewy, Chico scored that one.
  19. "The cover painting is by Wesley Duke Lee, a well-known contemporary Brazilian painter, who dedicated this painting to Segio Mendes." - from the liner notes. This record has great versions of Reza, Arrastao, and Mendes's own "Noa Noa."
  20. Forgot about CH's involvement in that one! I think of that more as an Elmer Bernstein score for whatever reason. Do you have that record? Was there a SSoS Chico Hamilton album and an Elmer Bernstein soundtrack?
  21. Does anyone have any details on this upcoming release? I'm hoping it has some music from Polanski's "Repulsion." Dusty Groove says it will be out in Feb. I can't find any track listings online.
