I think i know the guy too. A BN completist. I remember this auction. And yes, its very difficult to find in NM condition, mainly because of the rubbing of the very dark cover.
-
Blue Note albums were not originally sold in shrink. So either it is a resaeled record for sale purpose, or it is a non DG no flat non ear reissue from around end of 60's. (even with lex label)
-
Jackie mc Lean "'about soul" BN liberty. Free and groovy....
-
I agree with all i read regarding this one, but we must admit that its almost impossible to find a NM cover of this particular (at least i have never seen one) they all have rubbing, and soften corners. Those framed covers have always a flaw here or here... Regarding the sound... The guys pays 1000 + for this VG+++, because it is described as VG+++ : but how many times will he actually listen to the record. (Trashed or noisy copies are often described as "playing copies"....which is absurd ! ). To sum up : the bid is for the object, and the history... (you can say : for the show) not for the musical facts (IMO). That is where we are now with Blue Note collecting.

$1,293 ?!? [url=http://cgi.ebay.com/LEE-MORGAN-BLUE-NOTE-1538-INDEED-flat-edge-RVG-ear-EX_ Have a look at popsike.com, and consider how many of those pricey ebay records are relisted one or two weeks before the first auction...very interesting !.... some guys apprently have bigger ego than banking account (and brain).

Nat Adderley "That's nat" savoy 12021 DG flat original ! Nice session. Nothing fantastic, but nice.
-
Don BYAS Jazz free and easy on regent DG original. Short before the one way ticket to Europe. Don is my all time favourite tenor player. One of the most impressive tenor sax.

Try to watch out for real first pressings if you consider to buy LP's on the New Jazz label. They need to have wide deep grooves. Second (or second run) pressings are without deep groove and are often pressed on vinyl which has a tiny spots or a kind of haze (which produces the hiss). These second pressings come often in unlaminated jackets. My DG copies of 8252 and 8253 sound fine! Well these ARE DG first press ! But when i ply them with mono cartidge it eliminates the hiss. But I have a Ken MC Intyre (8247) that has no DG and this haze (and hiss) problem whatever.

That's always been an expensive record. I saw a copy sell for $1100 or $1200 3-4 years ago in NM condition. Hey Hey ! another Blue Note that did not make the reserve price. I tell you : Ebay Blue Note madness is going down !! In 2012, Blue Note will be affordable for the middle class !!

Bill Evans trio "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" Riverside Orig DG. (You get some bounce this bass player, too !)
-
I have a copy of this second run Bohemia. Disk Ok, But seams are taped...Maybe i should bid just for the cover ?

That's always been an expensive record. I saw a copy sell for $1100 or $1200 3-4 years ago in NM condition. Yes but this one has probably no flat edge, and apparently no kakubuchi cover. Not very first press IMO.

I'd like to talk about Don Byas (1912-1972), IMO one of the very top tenor players in the whole jazz history. It is well known, and often noted than Don, who made almost all if its carrier in Europe, never got the attention he deserved, because of that. All of his recordings are extraordinary. His sound is fantastic (both wild and mild, unique, his technic was fabulous. The harmonical richness of his choruses is outstanding : Don never played any gimmick, any used effect, everything from his horn is new. I have rarely spent a day without him....I suggest everyone to buy his 1945-1946 (on classic records) recordings and the two CD's from the beginning of the French era (laura / En ce temps là 1946 - 1952)) : of course Don has a far superior level compared to its colleagues, but they do a fine job, and let him most of the space. So Don' improvisations are all extraordinary.

Your thread made me dig it out and listen to it. Yes : more than quite good ! Booker Ervin is, as usual, extraordinary. And the music is really good.
-
The Booker Ervin Booker Little was originally released on Warwick (W 2033) as Teddy Charles' new directions quintet "Metronome presents Jazz in the Garden at the Museum of Modern Art" with TC + Ed Shaughnessy, mal Waldron, Addison farmer + BE and BL NY 25/08/1960 This record is quite tough to find, but not especially sought after. Quite good session anyway

Tricotism was not originally released by Impulse. It is originally two ABC paramount albums (ABC 111 and ABC 136) both entitled "Lucky thompson, featuring oscar pettiford" vol I and II. When Impulse was founded, it was a branch of ABC paramount, so now the reissue CD is on Impulse logo, but reissue ABC material under the title "tricotism". There has never been any impulse album entitled "tricotism". Here's the reason !

Near Mint Minus is the same Ebay bullshit as "the record is unplayed, no intrusive noise, no distorsion of any kind even in quiet passages"
-
[ ] They can be very variable, in my experience (a bit like New Jazz in that respect - when good they are very good. When bad they completely suck). I've had more luck with the UK pressings, to be honest. I think some of the very early ones came out over here on Parlophone and these are probably the best of the UK versions. Very heavy vinyl.
