  1. Gabor Szabo's High Contrast (Blue Thumb) w/Bobby Womack, so it's a little funkier than Gabor's usual. I used to have Double Nickels on a Dime on lp too. Good album.
  2. I've been itching to get another select and after reading this thread I think this is the one.
  3. I just picked up the Vee-Jay Definitive Collection from Shout Records. It's got jazz, blues, r&b, rock and roll, and do wop on the four discs and one of the things I like about it is that the styles aren't segregated so it's like listening to a good radio station playing your favorite or soon to be favorite tunes without any commercials. I've heard three of the discs so far and it's a real winner. There are quite a few songs that I was familiar with but didn't know they were on the label like Duke of Earl.

    John Tchicai

I'm only 5'7" and he looks very tall to me, so he's definitely over 6'.

    John Tchicai

I've seen John many times in recent years when he was living in Davis, Ca. He played at all kinds of venues from concert halls to clubs and even art galleries. He's always doing interesting things. Some I like more than others, but he's always searching and I admire that. Some his more recent recordings that I like are Infinitestimal Flash w/ Adam Lane, Francis Wong and Mat Maruchi on Buzz Records and Anybody Home? a live recording in a cave in the Faroe Islands on TUTL records. The first one is very high energy with some good interplay between Francis Wong and John. The second one shows the quieter side of John. I have that with Strings album too. I need to give it a spin soon. I like it enough but I haven't really played it a lot. I've always really liked his bass clarinet work. I don't know if he's recorded much with it, but for a while there he was playing it in the clubs a lot.
  6. The new Alejandro Escovedo album Real Animal. The vinyl version as two bonus cuts.
  7. I wish he'd come to California. I'd love to see him in concert.
  8. Billie and Dede Pierce - (Riverside) orig. Black label Stereo.

    Art Farmer

I've got the original non live album on lp and I've always really liked it. I was surprised to find out through this Mosaic release that it wasn't live. The "new" one is on my short list to buy. Being a big fan of Art Farmer, I knew it would probably be a good one. I'm glad to hear some confirmation.
  10. I've always liked that one a lot too and I agree with the strings comment. Everything else is so good, why'd they have to muck it up with strings. It's right up there with the first Hot Tuna album imo.l
  11. I agree. I've had that same cd in my player a lot since I got it.
  12. Nat Adderley - To the Ivy League from Nat (Emarcy) orig. DG Mono
  13. Last night it was Time for Tyner. La Leyenda de la Hora (Columbia) Van Gelder Mastering Extensions (Bluenote) Liberty pressing Reaching Fourth (Impulse) orig. Black and Orange Mono pressing
  14. Harold Mabern's Rakin' and Scrapin' (Prestige) OJC
  15. I've only occasionally entertained the idea of getting one. I rarely have a need for a portable music machine and if I did it would be for short train trips or flying, both of which I rarely do. It sounds like 20 or 30g would be all I'd ever need. One question, how many minutes of music would you get on a 20g if your music was ripped at 320kbps?
  16. Those are some cool looking amps. How do they sound?
  17. I've heard the slightly larger Line 6 amps in clubs and they sound pretty nice to me. Of course, it depends on the skill of the musician too, but I was pretty impressed with what I heard. I've been playing guitar almost forty years now and drums for eighteen years. I'm not a collector of instruments or a big proponent of effects, so here's what I have. Yamaha FG 160 that I bought brand new in 1973. '67 Fender Telecaster I bought used from a guy along with a '66 Fender Vibro Champ ($175.00 for both) in 1976. D.O.D. Compressor MXR Distorion + Cry Baby Wah Wah pedal Coricidin Bottle for slide that I've had since 1974. Brass slide and my new baby (bought it yesterday) Taylor CE315 acoustic (2003 model I bought used)
  18. It's too bad you don't live in the Sacramento area, 'cause I'm that kind of drummer and I'm also a guitarist first and foremost. I did a practice session with a band that was looking for a new drummer and after we had played a few songs they asked me if I could play louder! Of course, this was a rock band and not a jazz band, but still I just looked at them kind of sheepishly and said, I'll try. I don't think I really was able to do it satisfactorly. A drummer once told me that he tried to draw the sound out of his drum or cymbal instead of simply striking said instrument to get his sound. I always think of that when I'm playing. I hate drum solos for the most part and I don't do drum solos myself. I really prefer playing the guitar most of the time but drums are so much fun to play so I try to keep a balance between the two as far as keeping my chops up. Not ALL drummers are evil. Some of us listen and serve the song.
  19. That's been my experience too. Those early ones (the Monks, Herbie Nichols, Brownie etc.) are usually immaculate. I had to request a replacement LP on the Miles Blackhawk set but of course the great people at Mosaic sent a replacement out pronto. I think that's the only time I've ever had a flawed LP from Mosaic, a fantastic QA performance from them. I had to have an lp replaced in the Blackhawk box too. I can't recall at the moment what it was for sure, but I think it was a scratch. Whatever it was, it was an audible defect and Mosaic sent a replacement immediately.
  20. My damaged covers were not taken care of properly fast enough so I ended up having to toss most (approx. 85%) of them. Some of them survived inspite of that and some of them did warp a little. If your record storage conditions are rather tight, it shouldn't cause any warping of the lp. At least I didn't experience that myself.
  21. Jazz Impressions of Pal Joey - Kenny Drew Trio (Riverside) Black Stereo label followed by A Slice Of the Top - Hank Mobley (Bluenote) Capitol pressing.
  22. I see recordings on the label all the time but I've always heard that the pressings were poor so I've avoided them. I suppose if there was something really worth owning, I'd put up with the noise. So far, I haven't seen anything that really interested me.
  23. This morning I listened to some solo piano recordings. Randy Weston (PA/USA) WLP and Kenny Drew's Everything I Love (Steeple Chase) then I woke myself up with Charles Mingus' Blues and Roots (Atlantic) Red/Purple Mono copy.
  24. I had this happen to me back in 1990. I was out of town for a week before I was able to return to the mess. My insurance company had a contractor out at the house within a day or two and one of the employees took the records out of the sleeves and wrapped them butcher paper but left the covers and sleeves together. The covers that weren't in plastic sleeves were the most damaged of course. Only a handful of records were damaged though and they were ones that had visible dirt/debris on them. I didn't have a record cleaner like you so my cleaning technique at the time couldn't save some of them. For many though, the lps themselves ended up being fine. Since you have a proper rcm, you should be fine. I wish I had bought one right away but my entire house was damaged and I had to live in a hotel for two months while they replaced walls, ceilings, flooring etc. not to mention me needing to replace almost all of my furniture. When I say I feel your pain, I really do! Good luck.
  25. Maybe this isn't the place to mention this but I recently won EMARCY MG36100 DG BLUE LABEL TO THE IVY LEAGUE FROM NAT on Ebay for $30.00 including shipping/insurance, etc. I've never heard or seen this album before but I have a couple of early Nat Adderley albums on Emarcy and love them. I hope it's a good one. I knew it was a little risky but for the price I thought it was worth a gamble. Does anyone know this album?
