Thanks for sharing Supa Groover. I've never figured out the Verve label much. Hell I've learned some new things about the Bluenote label recently on this board. Sheesh. I have an orange label Ella Sings Cole Porter but I don't know if it's an original or not.

Strictly Powell - Bud Powell Trio (RCA) mono I'm in an obscure Powell mood tonight.

I went to a jazz club in Philly a few years ago for a little after dinner music, I think it was the Jazz Cafe or something like that. Pat Martino walked in right ahead of us and I recognized him but I didn't say anything. We sat down and started hearing some hot guitar from the stage and it turned out to be Jimmy Bruno and his band. Pat stood back at the bar the whole night. Everyone at my table kept telling me I should go up and talk to Pat, but I didn't want to disturb him, but as we walked out later that night, Pat was still standing at the bar drinking a glass of wine and I decided to go up to him and thank him for all the great music he had given us over the years. He said something like "Beautiful man, thanks." I thought it was wonderful the way he responded. He wasn't self effacing, but he didn't act all full of himself either or blow me off. He was very sweet and I'll never forget that short conversation we had. I wish he'd joined Jimmy though.

a major step in the ongoing search for the white Strozier... is Watts really "white"? I don't really know the answer to that question and I shared a cab with him one night!

Pony Poindexter's Pony's Express (Orig. Epic Mono) followed by Bud Powell's Moods (Clef Mono) (haven't pulled that one out in a long time.
-
He's more known for his tenor playing I suppose, but I've seen Ernie Watts play alto many times. He usually has both on stage with him and he's a hell of a player.

Haven't listened to this one in a while but I remember it as being one of the best from the incredible number of Hank Jones trio dates that appeared in those times. And if it's the Progressive LP release with the David Stone Martin cover, yes go for it! Thanks. I can't recall the label, but it has a picture of Hank on the front, so it's not that release. I think I'll go back and get it anyway. I should have known.

That's good to know (it is). The Genius of Coleman Hawkins (Verve Stereo)

Can anyone recomend Arigato by The Hank Jones Trio from 1976? I used to snap up everything I found by the man, but I have so much of his music now that I've back off a little. I saw this lp in a store today and almost bought it. Should I go back and get it?

Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 - Equinox (A&M wlp) followed by Andrew Hill's Live at Montreux (Arista promo) I finally found a copy of this today.

Anyone trying to own the complete Hank Jones discography is really sick.

Blood Sweat and Tears eponymous release (Two Eye Columbia Stereo) I found this one yesterday still in the shrink wrap for $5.00! I didn't pay much attention to them when they first came out, but this is a pretty decent album and the sound quality is amazing.

Jazz Waltz - Les McCann and the Jazz Crusaders (Pacific Jazz ) I just bought this original sealed copy today. I'm loving it.

The Trip - Art Pepper (Contemporary) Get well George! Monk's Music - (orig. Mono Riverside) St. Giles Cripplegate - Jack Nitzsche (Reprise WLP)

Song for my Daughter - Jack Wilson (BN Liberty) Beethoven's First Symphony - Toscanini w/NBC Orchestra (RCA Mono) I need to play some Monk before the evening's gone.

(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?
six string replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
I have Easterly Winds, Song for my Daughter and The Two Sides of Jack Wilson on lp. Though they aren't groundbreaking, I still like them a lot and listen to them often. It's a shame that he never really got his due. It sounds like he was on to something with the two piano technique. RIP -
Mahoney's Last Stand = Ronnie Lane, Ron Wood, et. al. (Get Back! reissue) It's not his best, but God bless Ronnie Lane anyway.
-
On a related note, where should I start with Von Freeman? I've been curious for years, but never got around to a purchase.

Ummmmmmmm placidyl......aaaarrrrghhhhhhh........ I just got burned (sort of) buying a Paul Desmond album on line on the Discovery label. It's called East of the Sun and it's the same damn album on Warner Brothers titled First Place Again, which I already had. It was listed as an original Discover album. Ok, so it's an original on that label, but it's a f***in' reissue. Grrrrr. It's in pristine shape and I love the cover but I didn't need two copies of the album. Or maybe I do. It is a great album. I concur about your thoughts on Easy Living. It's a favorite of mine too and one that made me really pay attention to Desmond.

I've had a pair of these in my living room for years and I still love them. I don't listen to them by themselves though as I have a subwoofer for the extra bass I need. Other than that, they are fine speakers. The midrange is very life like. A friend of mine who doesn't have a lot of space bought a small set of B&W bookshelf speakers and he was very happy with them. I don't know the model number.

But it's a good $8.00 lp! I'm not at home now to check on my catalog number, but Blackhawk was a SF Bay area label for a while, so they may have reissued it at one time. OK, I'm done.

I've wanted a RCM for some time, but I don't know if I have the space for it.

Mine's on Ekapa... never saw a Vol.2 of this one, strangely. Nor have I. I strongly suspect there wasn't one. MG My copy says Ekapa/Blackhawk. Does your copy have Blackhawk on the label too? If not, I wonder if mine is a reissue on the Blackhawk label. I've never seen a vol.2 either.

I had a nice little session last night with the following: Live at Sweet Basil vol.1 Abdullah Ibrahim w/Carlos Ward (Blackhawk) Coalition - Elvin Jones (that one smokes) (Bluenote Liberty) Lady Sings the Blues - Billie Holiday ( Mono Verve) Brass Shout - Art Farmer arranged by Benny Golson (orig. Mono UA)

Re: the seller's insistance on Exce being a Golmine rating, maybe you could copy Goldmine's page on rating records and ask him where the exce is on that page. For someone to insist on something being true that everyone who knows Goldmine knows it isn't, is a little troubling. I have yet to buy anything on ebay because of all the horror stories I read. It might mean that I don't always get what I want, when I want it, but I have good success from online stores that deal with used lps and they have a little more at stake than Joe Blow working out of his house trying to make a little money on the side. Good luck.
