That looks like a great band. I've just recently been made aware of Nathan Davis and really like what I've heard. It's interesting that as connected as he seemed to be, there isn't an entry in my All About Jazz book or the Penguin Guide on Jazz. His Sixth Sense in the Eleventh House album is fantastic.

I can no longer trust new USA vinyl production....

Steve gets to speak negatively about other engineer's work and that seems to be ok. That's the part I don't like. If we say something negative about Steve, we're taking food from his children's mouths. If only Steve was as concerned about these other engineers, if only..... Well, it's part of the business as well: speaking negatively against your competitors. I mean if I remastered Soul Station and RVG did the same, speaking negatively about RVG would push my product. Welcome to the free trade. That's all fine with me except the part where he and his gorts sqash any negativity towards Steve and his work because it's against the forum's policies. -

I think they split up sometime around 1970, though I may be wrong. Absolutely love Stanley's sound and playing. Instantly identifiable; BIG and soulful. Have you bought the Blue Hour sessions with Gene Harris and The Three Sounds? Some find it sleep-inducing but its tough to find a more soulful sounding Mr. T. That was my first Stanley album. Bought it two years ago. It's pretty good. Sugar was my first Stanley album too back in 1982. It was recomended by a friend of mine from New Zealand who lived in the same apartment complex. Nowadays I really prefer his early Bluenote stuff, but his tone is always great regardless of what he's doing. I bought the Mosaic box a while back and love it. I still need a copy of Live at Minton's vol.2. That album is really hard to find for some reason. In fact a lot of his early BN stuff isn't very readily available. I wonder why? Of his later period, what can someone suggest as a purchase? I see his lps in the bends all the time but the covers scare me away!

Agreed. I've never seen that cover before.

This can only mean that you have your Christmas lights up and your shopping done. Please tell me that you weren't at a mall at 4 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving.

Clifford Jordan--These Are My Roots (Atlantic mono, purple and orange label) I found a green/blue stereo version in Nashville a couple of years ago. Being a fan of Clifford Jordan I knew I wanted it even though at the time, the instrumentation seemed a little odd. I was pleasantly surprised when I got it home and gave it a spin. I really like it and it's one of the most interesting jazz albums I own. I'm pretty confident it will never see a cd reissue.

I feel your pain Al. I had a worse thing (to me) happen a few months ago. I dropped my record clamp on my Scout which put a small scratch on the plynth. Fortunately it didn't hit the tonearm, but I almost which it had hit the record instead, though I can't remember what record was on the table at the time.

That was my first Mingus record but not because of forethought or knowledge. At that time I had heard that Mingus was important and I didn't have any of his music. My copy was lost in a flood and I've never replaced that. I've forgotten about that album until now. Someday, I'll run across another copy and it'll be interesting to see what I remember from it.

I forgot to mention in the other post, but this is the lp I have, so you you are correct as well.

This place is great! I knew someone would know. Thanks to everyone and especially Chuck. It's a good album and the sound quality is very acceptable.

I'll have to wait until I get home to answer these questions. I listened to it once last night and I was a little distracted unlike my usual situation on a first listen, but I remember piano, bass, drums, guitar and NO STRINGS. I cant' remember if I heard an audience or not. If there is, it's a quieter club type date because I can't really recall any loud clapping. The liner notes and the thickness of the vinyl makes me think it's an early to mid seventies pressing. I sent an email to his website to see if they might have an answer but I won't know about that until I get home too. Sorry for the missing gaps of info. I should have waited until I could answer more thoroughly.

I posted this in the now playing section, but this is where it belongs. Eddie Harris - Trip! (Stereo Sounds) New one for me. Anyone heard of this record before? There are no credits on anything on this record. Liner notes has no name, no list of musicians outside of Eddie's name on the cover, no songwriter's credits on cover or label and there are a lot of standards on it. The cover says that the label is a subsidiary of Phono-Record Management Inc. L.A., Ca. It's not on his website's discography and not on AMG either. He was on so many labels over the years, so I can see how a discography could miss one. It's a solid straight ahead date though.
