  1. This thread has gotten way too intellectual(or anti-intellectual..whatever the F that is) for me. I'm at a loss on what to do. Maybe, just maybe, I'll listen to some music. Carry on....
  2. Here is another way I look at my need for critics. I'm too busy listening to the music. Why do I need a review to see if I like OP or Bill Evans? At times I would like an educator to tell me what the hell Tristano, Marsh and Konitz are doing that is so different. I figured the enjoyable part out for myself. Sometimes, I like a writer to tell me stories, but not too much about a musicians private life. This is the simplest part: The musicians are communicating to me, not to me via a review or critic. I think the musicians want it this way. That's just me, for the most part. If others think something different, that's great for them and I hope the review and critic help them.
  3. Sure, I take it all in. I draw the line when a person thinks his opinion is fact or something that is important beyond his own universe. I respect all reviewers/critics opinions, but that's all they are, opinions to me. There was a thread about a Grant Green album that most hated or thought was one of his worst. We were all being critcs. That is fine, and I took it all in, but in the end it's just a subjective opinion and I kept right on enjoying the album. Zero basis in fact, unless a consensus of opinion makes it a fact. I like writers that inform, describe, etc., but leave the final analysis up to me. Once again, I keep it simple, do I or don't I enjoy the music. Morgenstern put it very nicely. I wish all reviews ended with, "Your mileage may vary".
  4. Yes, you are probably right. Usually, a suggestion in an e-mail does the trick in a nice way.
  5. Weird, just the opposite for me. Everytime I light up a cigar there is some guy playing an odd sounding organ, and disturbing my conversation.
  6. Probably, because there is a lot more here than critiques.
  7. Try HERE for starters. Or, pick up a Goldmine.
  8. Get rid of the jumper plate your speakers came with and buy 2 feet of very good OFC speaker cable(10-12 gauge), and make some 6" jumpers. You could also try some 20 gauge solid silver. No need to terminate with spades. Super cheap upgrade.
  9. Ran Blake: Rapport Finally, warming up to this one.
  10. I keep it simple: either I like the music or I do not. I could care less what others think, either way. I like liner notes and informative/educational articles that critics sometimes write(like Larry Kart's Tristano Mosaic article that I'm reading now)), but when it gets into how good the the mucic is, that's up to me to decide and I do not need/want a critic evaluating my likes/dislikes. Listening to and really enjoying a bunch of Pablo titles at the moment. I could GAS if critics do not like them. There is an audiance for critics, but I'm not in attendance.
  11. There is a nice Habanos shop in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico that I visit when I'm there. Mexican tobacco tax is about 200%, so that churchill would be about $30. It's fun to look and buy a few cheap, but tasty machine mades. I buy from here instead. LINK
  12. I think this is one of the 3 EL's I have resting. I'll try to let them age another year, but who knows.
  13. Get Back has a lot of titles in print, but I've stayed away for the reasons you mention. Basie: 88 Basie Street (Pablo) Sinatra: September of My Years (Nice reissue)
  14. Just got back from a nice lunch and cigar at the local country club. Cuban Vegas Robaina Unico. Give this one a try Brownie. Down to my last couple from a 4 year old box. Golf Course At Newcastle has a great cigar lounge. If the Guinness wasn't $6 a pop and the memberships were a little less than $150,000, I'd still be there.
  15. Now I understand, I think. There is not a complete one online, fine. There is one available on CD-ROM for $99. There is a more up-to-date version for more $$. Thank you for your kind response.
  16. You are so off the wall, sometimes. Translate, please. I would be glad to help, as I have few Pablo's.
  17. Something with all the details: dates/songs/performers, etc.. Is this another project for Mr. Fitzgerald?
  18. Too many weird buyers out there. I'm so glad I changed my policy. Ebay has never ran smoother for me. Once the buyer is satisfied with the transaction, I consider the transaction complete. This usually comes in the form of an e-mail or a PFB from resposible and honorable buyers. I could care less if a buyer leaves FB, just so long as know they are happy.
  19. Thank you!!!
  20. Coltrane: Crescent Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis with the Tommy Flanagan Trio: Straight Ahead (Pablo) Nice record with very decent sound. Ellington/Brown: This One's For Blanton (Pablo) A must own with wonderful sound to boot!!! Ellington: Up In Duke's Workshop (Pablo) Love the fairly natural(large) dynamic range on this one.
  21. I would contact the speaker designer, since it is speaker/system dependent. To generalize, most recommend good jumpers and bi-amping to get the most from their speakers. Been wanting to try 300B amp on the mids and a 2A3 amp on the tweeters. I'd also recommend trying better grade parts in the crossover as another way to greatly improve your speaker. Some of the caps/resistors/inductors, even in expensive speakers, are the cheapest they could find.
  22. Big, expensive vinyl sets do not seem to move out the door. No one is doing them. The few smaller sets I've seen lately are going for $25-30 per LP. Most Mosaics LP sets did seem to go pretty fast, so I was surprised to see them end. If Classic did more sets they would be $30 per LP as their RCA and Verve sets were/are. Analogue Productions charged $35 per LP for their 2 sets.
  23. Most buyers are glad to purchase insurance. I can require buyer to buy insurance. I can make disclaier that if you do not get item insured you are SOL if it gets lost/damaged. As a buyer I have most items insured and am glad to pay for it.
  24. Do they say they hated the CD? Or do they make up lies about your service as a seller? Seems to me, if someone posts negative feedback like that, no one is going to give a shit about their negative statement because no one in their right mind regards it as legitimate. yeah, you get a (-1) in your "score", but so what? The fact remains that negative feedback can be responded to. That's all you need to do. I do not want an unearned NFB, even if I can respond to it and even if people do not give a shit. Seems like waiting until buyer is satisfied before posting FB would make them think twice and be honest and fair. All I know is it's working and I felt forced to go this way do to occasional dishonest/petty buyers. Just because a buyer pays does not mean the transaction is complete to everyone's satisfaction. In addition, if I've dealt with a buyer before and found him/her to be honest/fair I have no problem with leaving FB when I receive payment. Also, there are buyers that do not leave FB for any of their transactions. I have no idea what's going on unless they leave FB or e-mail me once they receive item. I especially wait to leave FB when a buyer has his item shipped surface to Singapore without insuring it. I've even had one buyer send me payment that was $1 short, adding that my $3 charge for media shipping was too high. Needless to say, I sent his payment back. I just love eBay!! Always good for a laugh.
  25. Here is the 2004 survey all about the eBay feedback system. Pretty interesting results. LINK LINK
