  1. Latest arrival from Newcastle

John Pope——Citrintas——-(New jazz & improvised music recordings)

Not sure what prompted buying this other than hearing some nice sounding clips on Bandcamp.  It’s a soulful quintet ( no piano or guitar) . Grooves nicely and makes a good first impression. Hope that doesn’t sound like feint praise as the music strikes me as accessible but still adventurous. Any one else heard of this group.

  2. Sad news. His recordings are as numerous as they are wonderful. His duets with Jan Johansson are particularly fine. About a decade ago ACT released some JJ broadcasts which included the two musicians performing material from the famous "Jazz På Svenska" recordings.

I took a chance on this relatively recent release on Discus. It's as good as the samples on Bandcamp would suggest. I'm not familiar to any of the musicians on this release. The leader plays the trumpet. A modern version of Bubber Miley with lots of lovely growling and fluttering sounds. Very convincing effort.

I'm a bit behind the curve. Mr Ottaviano I think has a new one out but when I went looking I only came across this duet with our man in Oxford. Released in 2022, I recall looking to get it in the UK without success at the time. It's a beautiful love letter to Mingus covering only his compositions.

thought I'd let people here know about this - 'Immense Blue', by my trio with Rachel Musson and Mark Sanders, released a couple of days ago:

    https://westhill.bandcamp.com/album/immense-blue

I listened to a clip the other day then got completely side tracked looking up Rachel Musson as she was a new name to me. That lead to other things and forgetting about the new disc. Corrected now- ordered

Tony Oxley Quintet - The Baptised Traveller [CBS/Realm LP]

    At last!

Fine album. I have the same issue which isn't as iffy as other CBS pressings from that time. I was passing an Oxfam charity shop probably a decade ago and saw it in the window. Needless to say I parked up..

Always partial to the Intakt imprint this one slipped my notice , mainly on account of not recognising any of the protagonists. My error was corrected by scanning a few end of year lists on Freejazzblog where this issue by Anna Webber featured. Very fine music indeed

Well, physical delivery and VAT payments are different things, no contradiction here. If you google that IBAN you will probably see if it belongs to FedEx, tax authorities or somebody else.

Don't know how FedEx does it here, but DHL sends you an email with import declaration and payment link before the package is delivered. For this to work, Mosaic has to provide them with your email, which they probably do not! If Mosaic really gave a fuck had more resources they could actually arrange collecting VAT at the moment of purchase - this can be arranged in cooperation with couriers. This simplifies the process for the customer and there are no rip-off courier "processing" fees upon delivery of the goods.

Anyway, I am getting my set from Jazz Messengers, shipped the same day I ordered it (which is today), good service as always.

another curse of Brexit ... I recently paid VAT twice  on ordering and to get DHL to deliver. It was darkroom materials from Dublin. Over a month later I'm still waiting to see if I'll get the second set of VAT back.

A couple of CDs arrived today from Fundacja . Took a wee while to get here but it’s always worth the wait.

first up a quarte recording with two from this parish

Karl Evangelista ——What else is there ——-( FSR 11/2023) featuring Alexander Hawkins .

the other arrival from FSR has turned out to be equally as good

    Herberer/Fonda/Hertenstein-----Remedy Vol. 2------(FSR 12/2023)

    A quite playful  trio set - trumpet/bass/drums. I really like this .

Miraculously my set arrived without VAT or import duties.

I'm holding my breath. I wasn't charged duty either but I've known to receive these charges later. It's only ever happened when Mosaics have arrived by courier services. I noted that  the full value of the set was declared on mine unlike all previous Mosaic shipments over the past thirty years....

The music is superb and I'm only on Disc One. A real triumph of set by Mosaic.

Mark Styker mentioned this last week or the week before in one of his Twitter posts so I picked up a copy.

Recently I had an attempt at an LP clear out. This was on the pile for possible onward movement.Once I listened to it I realised that it was a keeper. Better sound compared to the Bird in Paris set , but that too was a keeper.

    Ernst Raijseger & Alan "Gunga" Purves---------Cellotape & Scotchtape-------(Data) 1981

Beautiful duet. I was lucky enough to catch Gunga guest recently with Playtime quartet. He was born here in Edinburgh but seems to have spent most of his career in Amsterdam. His style is very reminiscent of Han Bennink.

And yeah, Independence: Tread on Sure Ground is a great record. I have the 1980s Union pressing which used to be fairly cheap... not sure whether Cinedelic is legit but at least if it sounds good that's something. I know Jeff has an original 1970 pressing of that record, which is very tough to come by.

I couldn't immediately lay my hands on my copy of I:ToSG but looking at Cinedelic's reissue of Togashi's "Speed and Space" it states that it's licensed from Teichiku Co. Ltd. Label reproduces original (?) Union label and has Japanese OBI  !  This reissue also has great sound and on the face of it appears legit.
