  1. I've been listening to a lot of Art lately. Neon Art, the above and a Pete Jolly + friends on Atlas. The latter was so dull that its the first Art to hit my for sale pile. Smack Up however is one of his best early phase albums. Generally I prefer late Art but still have a lot of time for the earlier material. Art Pepper Quintet --- "Smack Up" .........( Vogue UK mono)
  2. Mosaic - not received any notice to pay VAT yet ( it's been five days or so). I've yet to order a Mosaic from JM
  3. Made it to disc 4 and I have to say I'm not disappointed. I have scattered entries from his discography but haven't investigated his music throughly - my way of saying I'm not a hardcore fan. Very limited weirdness ( vocals !!) and just a lot of strong tunes and thoughtful playing in great set. I'm not sure that this set is overkill. I really like it
  4. Sad news, in many ways we were lucky to have him for so long. Truly an amazing talent.
  5. Very sad news. Great talent whether with the Blue Notes or our own Alexander Hawkins. Very classy
  6. I'm really tempted as I have none of this material and my opinion of Pharaoh has only increased over the years. As a UK resident it might the first set I get from Jazz Messengers ...
  7. New release on Intakt- terrific gig from 1981 radio broadcast SRF Irene’s Hot Four- Schweizer, Rudiger Carl, Johnny Dyani, Han Bennink. Impressive lineup delivers. I don’t know Carl but he’s well up to the world class standard of the others.
  8. This is a great release. It is beautifully recorded which allows the extraordinary music to shine.
  9. Hi Lon I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm hopelessly devoted to my two dogs. The rest of the family love them too but make no mistake they are my dogs...
  10. I considered culling this from my collection. Gave it a spin to check and immediately thought , "no way" and having played it through several times it rejoined other Farmers on my shelves.
  11. Mercifully just one, But Beautiful (09:39) It’s soporific, to put it mildly
  12. Its a cracker - based on my listening to 2 out of the 3 LPs in the vinyl edition
  13. I recall this being pretty good although my copy was well used/worn ! Arthur Jones----Scorpio----(America) Interesting set. Curiously Discogs dates this issue to 1971 the same year as the BYG release. Seems odd given that they are both French labels. The liners to the America issue are just in English - perhaps this edition was for export ? Sound/pressing is better than typically found from BYG issues.
  14. new arrival - great , great band for Tubby in wonderful sound. Pity this hasn't seen a vinyl release. The CD was only issued this week and seems to be close to sold out Tubby Hayes --- Antibes '62----(Jazz in Britain)
  15. I have one of the Shandars and knew that the music was top drawer Ra and in great sound. No regrets
  16. I've had a meditative afternoon of randomly pulling Sun Ra LPs off my shelves prompted by the RSD 2025 release of the Fondation Maeght concerts. I wasn't going to get the Maeght but was offered it at cost price so I couldn't refuse. The music and sound is superlative of course. So this afternoon reissues from the past decade. Monorails and Satellites (3 LP set) Roma '77 ( double LP) Heliocentric Worlds Vol.1 Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold All solid sets with Roma '77 possibly the most unusual . I really need to stop buying Sun Ra because I have way too much already but it's never disinteresting ( or at least the ones I pick up !)
  17. I've long accepted that "box office" always comes further up the bill than the artists I'd be interested in. I'm mindful however that the former effectively bankroll the latter less commercially viable acts.
  18. My first copy of this was a very noisy pressing , it's a nice enough session from the master. I have rather of lot of Solal on LP and CD. His 50s Vogue recordings would be good place to start. Evan Parker----- Tracks-----(Incus 42) Signed copy ( I think by EP !) Very fine session , sound is great even if the recording was digital
  19. That sort of behaviour drives me wild. Dave Burrell----la vie de boheme----(Actuel) Black label original release. Amazingly quiet pressing with no stuck groove on either side. Very different from your average BYG session
  20. Janusz Muniak----Question Mark ----(Muza) 1978 Warsaw Decent post Trane session, had this one a while , came in bunch of other Polish jazz LPs. I don't know anything about the players ( its a quintet with piano, guitar , sax and rhythm section)
  21. Joe Newman----plays in Paris -------(Vega) French 10 inch LP Nice title Parisian session from 1957. Despite all the Basie alumni it doesn't sound exactly like a Basie session, a bit lighter on its feet.
  22. Great album, my copy has exactly the same cut out..
  23. Sadao Watanabe----Round trip----(CBS/Sony) Japan issue 1970 Cracking album from the uneven Watanabe with an all star line up. Original sound is a little on the thin side but it's an excellent session from NYC July 1970.
  24. I'd not realised this..a friend picked this up for me when he was record shopping in Tokyo a few weeks ago.
  25. Joe Henderson----henderson's habiliment------(Victor) 2025 Japanese reissue ,
