  1. I'm looking forward to the game tonight. I'm  hoping that Saka continues to shine and I really admire Southgate and his team who all seem to be level headed.

What I can't stand  however is the incredibly  jingoistic media hype that is a major deterrent for me in getting behind the English team. It just goes on endlessly and the media never seem to learn. A bit more humility would go along way in my book. Football owes England nothing and the country has no right to any outcome. It's not 55 years of hurt but rather underachievement.

Additionally I'm very disappointed to read today of Danish fans being verbally abused after the semi final. An absolute disgrace and a stain on the reputation.  So I'll need to decide which beer I'm drinking tonight, Watney's Red Barrel or Peroni.....

I'm hoping not, but expecting the worst, only because handrling charges have only been charged in the past by Royal Mail when they 'caught'' an eligible package. I'm assuming that if the VAT has been charged at source then this will be apparent and the parcels won't be 'caught/eligible'. I may be missing something but ...

Or are you referring to a different handling charge?

Do your NI family want to adopt?

Yes Royal Mail and any others. I recently ordered  used camera equipment  from the EU. This (item+postage costs) was subjected to VAT at 20% and a customs handling charge by DHL of £12. It really makes ordering items from the EU prohibitive especially when used items don't attract VAT if sourced here in the UK. In this case it was something I'd not been able to find in the UK so I was prepared for the worst and got that outcome !

Thanks, good thought that I'd missed in the red mist...

Discogs now automatically calculating and adding VAT cost for sales from Europe.

"frictionless trade" my arse, thanks Boris and all the other Little Englanders

What I'm not clear about is whether Discogs orders crossing either way between UK and EU will have custom facilitation charges applied in addition to VAT being levied directly from the sale on the Discogs platform. These custom facilitation charges go to the courier or postal services and can make up a considerable percentage of the overall cost of importing items. The crazy thing is that everyone loses and I can't identify winners other than the exchequer. EU sales to UK will be deterred and vice versa. Brilliant. First world problem of course and very much secondary to climate change and fair vaccine distribution but it makes no sense to me. Perhaps I should get my EU orders shipped to my family in Northern Ireland.....

Tartan army looked rather un-army-like today. They did play their fair share: many will remember them for facilitating one of the greatest goals in Euro history.

Despite the loss there were positives. Plenty of chances created but two errors lead to the two goals. Czech team certainly deserved the win. I feel with a bit more maturity the Scottish team will improve ( but this will most likely happen after the Euros !)

Here we go again... it's coming home! 😀

First game was a bit slow to get started by Italy deserved their win. Turkey were very poor on the whole , with the 2-0 loss flattering them.

England look quite promising but they don't have Kieran Tierney so perhaps the Tartan army may be able to celebrate escaping the group stage. Well , at least I can dream.....

Any contacts at Omnivore Recordings that I can contact. Bought the LP, but the cardboard sleeve has a tear. The email form on the Omnivore Recordings website goes to an independent fulfillment center that is useless. No offer to provide a new jacket, just advice to return to the brick and mortar store where I purchased.

I had previous problems with cardboard gatefold covers with Resonance Records for a Record Store Day release, and they replaced it immediately..

Doubt the fulfillment center will contact Omnivore as they promised. It has been two weeks. No to take matters into my own hands.

Like the recording a lot. Just wish there was better quality control and that missing notion called customer service.

Sorry hear of the issues with your copy.

I ordered an LP edition before I saw the comments above regarding sound quality. It was there with some trepidation that I listened to the LP when it arrived yesterday. I find the sound pretty decent with a good balance. Perhaps there's a difference between the sound of the different formats. Pope's sax sound is a little grating but that's more about him than the recording itself. He sounds a touch like Jackie McLean - ie a bit flat or off pitch. (I'm no musician so don't shoot me, if I'm using the wrong terms here). So I was pleasantly surprised. I don't think it's some rediscovered masterpiece but interesting to hear nonetheless.

  7. I'm only missing 4 alternate takes so naturally I ordered it. Joe Henderson's BN sessions with Kenny D are amongst my favourite sessions .

I've all of the titles on CD and LP ( a real mixture of McMasters, Music Matters, NY monos etc) .  Pretty  much the same situation and thinking lay behind me getting  the recent Mobley set and I didn't regret getting it for one minute.

Totally agree, the latest RR archival release from JiB is really fantastic and despite being in mono (but may have been originally broadcast in stereo at that time) is undeniably both crystal clear and extremely innovative. I love RR's guitar work then as he was really pushing the boundaries. His compositions and arrangements are excellent too. Highly recommended.

Is anything known about the JiB vinyl ? I ask as my only vinyl from them to date (Group Sounds Four and Five) was less than perfect in terms of pressing. Nothing horrific but just a few more clicks than I generally get from recent vinyl issues. The sonic fidelity of their source tapes vary of course but it'd be good to hear of anyone else's experience with their vinyl editions. The CDs i've bought have been faultless.

  9. I'm certain that Open Sesame CD issue was my introduction to Tina. Jazz  was all pretty new to me around then in the late 80's. Although I liked what I heard it's really the passing of  the years that has solidified my interest in his music. I simply haven't got bored listening to Tina Brooks in the way that others have out stayed their welcome in my collection..

I'm really enjoying it. I'm no way near the Harper afficionado that some of our fellow board members are but to my ears this is a storming set, good some quality and production values. Can't believe anyone who likes Harper would be disappointed.

Some may baulk at the short playing time 20:16 and 15:29. The notes mention that the set was completed by a 20' 'Priestess' so I do wonder why they went for the shorter 'Croquet Ballet' for side 2.

my copy arrived yesterday , hoping to get the chance to play it today.

Thanks Clunky, that was exactly what I wanted to achieve with writing the blog so that is a huge compliment!

Small teaser for the Utopia discs with Jim Pepper, for I have the feeling these Tutu discs are still pretty unknown.

Yesterday I received Volume 1 of "...at Utopia", i  can see why you rate it so highly...Because of mix up by the seller i was earlier sent The Git Go in error but allowed to keep. So two very nice Waldron discs for the price of one.

  12. this last couple of weeks I've been playing Mal pretty much non stop. Along the way picking up a few items the most outstanding of which is the Super Quartet at Sweet Basil. Quite rightly you give it 5 stars. This is a great service you're doing. A book surely beckons...

  13. I'd ignored Redd's Blues because of poor reviews around the time the CD was released. I've been giving the session a listen and whilst it's clearly not a top drawer BN it still has plenty of interest. Jackie and Tina and what must have been a rare BN appearance by Benny Bailey. So its a bit like Lee Morgan's The Rajah , easy to see why it wasn't released at the time but well worth its belated release. It lacks the urgency of The Connection which is a favourite of mine but I'm happy i picked it up (cheaply!)

I agree Pim. Happy to wait as it will sound the same whenever it arrives.

It's not as if I don't have anything else to listen to...

    It’s delayed again....

Likewise, I paid up in November with Soundohm. They have been very reassuring that all pre-ordered copies will get delivered- eventually !

RIP.  This was one of those legendary, long OOP albums when I first got into the music in the early 70's.  By the time I finally heard/owned it 20 years later, it couldn't possibly meet my hyped-up expectations.

Gripsweat - Freddie Redd - The Music From "The Connection" - Blue Note - BLP4027

I've had this music in my car for the past eight years or so - it's on an SD card with a random bunch of jazz. It's such a great album that I never tire of hearing. Sad loss of another great RIP
