  1. Of the currently available sets, the Armstrong Decca is next on my list. Of the out-of-print sets I don't have, I wished I had bought the Ellington Capitol set, the Chico Hamilton set, the Tristano set, and the earlier Armstrong All-Stars Decca set.
  2. Teo Macero--Teo (Prestige, yellow and black, W. 50th) Conception--(Prestige, yellow and black, W. 50th) Originally purchased by Mr. and Mrs. P.R. Walker of 3504 Havana Street, Dallas.
  3. Arrived in the mail: Charnett Moffett--The Art of Improvisation (Motema) Chico Hamilton--Twelve Tones of Love (Joyous Shout)
  4. The Aaron Goldberg CD I have (Worlds) is good. I would be inclined to see him live, if I had the chance.
  5. Unless I missed something, it seems like a long time since the last two Henry Threadgill recordings came out.

    Stan Getz

Do you mean Apasionado? There are some inexpensive used copies available amazon.com sellers. Getz plays wonderfully on this record. A commercially oriented record, but I find several tracks to be superb.
  7. Several 2009 releases I like are: Billy Harper--Blueprints of Jazz Tom Harrell--Prana Dance (High Note) Lonnie Smith--Rise Up (High Note) Magos Herrera--Distancia (Sunnyside). Looking forward to hearing the new Chico Hamilton (ordered) and the soon to be released Otis Taylor with Jason Moran and Bandwagon.

The group won best Portuguese CD honors in the biggest Portuguese jazz magazine, JazzPT, for their self-titled 2008 Clean Feed Records release. Please show up and support this group and its efforts! Stan Getz

A trigger that should be pulled. Found a used LP copy of Dynasty sometime back in the 1970s and its been a favorite Stan Getz recording ever since (along with Sweet Rain). Those are the two Getz LPs that gripped me the strongest on first listens.
  10. I saw him live once, at the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York--a solo performance. Quite good. Of his leader recordings I've heard, I like the Blue Note trio record the best.
  11. Illinois Jacquet--The Message (Argo, mono)--in near mint condition, sounds fabulous. Arnett Cobb with Eddie Lockjaw Davis--Blow Arnett Blow (Prestige, yellow and black N.J. mono) Chico Hamilton--The Head Hunters (Solid State)--wow, where has this great record been hiding? (with Ray Nance on violin, Eric Gayle on guitar, Steve Potts alto).
  12. Duke Ellington--Ellington at Newport (Columbia six eyes) Ruby Braff and Pee Wee Russell at Storyville, vol. 2 (Savoy) Hugh Masekela--The Americanization of Ooga Booga
  13. I have the LP, not the CD. I believe the Mingus/Brubeck track is available on a Dave Brubeck CD anthology/retrospective on Columbia.
  14. Then there was a group of classical records (in very good shape) that I found recently, which had a series of dates written on the back, ranging from the 1960s to the 1990s--I assume this person felt compelled to write down every date on which he listened to the record on the back.
  15. I just bought a couple of dozen excellent early '60s jazz records which belonged to someone who wrote what at first glance appeared to be "Jug" on the back (Gene Ammons' record collection!), but on closer inspection I think it was "Greg".
  16. Charles Earland--Black Talk (Prestige, purple label)
  17. Yes, I also like that song alot; it's on my ipod. I believe this is her sixth original CD, I have all of them except for the very first one. I've never seen any of her CDs in the U.S.--only at Tower and Mix-Up in Mexico--hopefully the new one will be more available. The last two times I was in New York, Magos appeared at a club a two or three days before/after my visit. (Sigh).
  18. Great! I was feeling kind of lonely on this thread. In addition to Aaron Goldberg and Lionel Louke, it is Rickey Rodriguez on bass and Alex Kautz (from memory, as I'm not at home) on drums--plus two women backup singers who must be sisters on a couple of the songs. I don't think it has been available on CD in the U.S., but her preceding recording, Soliluna (a collaboration with another Mexican jazz vocalist, Iraida Noreiga) is really good, and very jazz oriented.
  19. Magos Herrera's first CD on an American label was released this past week--Distancia on Sunnyside. I was quite excited to receive it and listened repeatedly yesterday. Aaron Goldberg has taken over the piano chair in her group (and plays superbly), and Lionel Loueke guests on guitar (I like him better here than on his Blue Note recording). Songs are performed in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Highlights among the original compositions include the song that leads off the album--Reencuetro (Reencounter) and New Song (a prior version appeared on her wonderful preceding recording, Soliluna). There's a wonderful Spanish language version of Milton Nascimento's Vera Cruz, and a very nice version of Jobim's Retrato Em Branco E Preto. She's appearing at the Jazz Standard in New York on May 20. Here's her current concert schedule: may 20 2009 7:30p jazz standard. magos herrera.cd release concert new york, new york may 30 2009 8:00p teatro de la ciudad de mexico/cd release concert! mexico df, distrito federal jul 3 2009 5:00p philadelphia museum of art philadelphia, pennsylvania aug 20 2009 6:00p jazz @ vail square vail, colorado aug 21 2009 8:00p dazzle, denver, co denver, colorado

    Bill Triglia

    There's a Bill Triglia discography here. http://www.jazzdiscography.com/
  21. Mono or stereo? Both mono copies in nearly perfect shape that I found yesterday, along with a stereo Live at the Blackhawk, vol. 2.
  22. Miles Davis--Miles Ahead (Columbia six eyes) Miles Davis--Sketches of Spain (Columbia six eyes)
  23. Yes, I would, especially at that price; I usually like those Columbia Brubeck records. And Columbia six eyes LPs are finely made and have wonderful sound.
  24. Max Roach-- Scott Free (Soul Note) Ronald Shannon Jackson--What Spirit Say (DIW)
