Jazz in Plano... BRANFORD MARSALIS JAZZ QUARTET February 21, 2026 | 8:00 PM ROBINSON FINE ARTS CENTER This concert is sponsored by Tammy and Charles Miller and Back by popular demand, Jazz legend Branford Marsalis returns to the Plano Symphony stage, bringing a few friends along for the ride. The Branford Marsalis Quartet is Branford on saxophone, Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass, and Justin Faulkner on drums. Announced in early 2025, the Branford Marsalis Jazz Quartet will debut their first album with Blue Note Records, which will be an interpretation of the 1974 Keith Jarrett album Belonging. The Quartet will perform a few songs from the album in addition to original compositions to be played with the full orchestra and a selection of jazz classics.

At the Big Ears Festival this year, Isaiah Collier is doing a Coltrane tribute (Collier Plays Coltrane). At the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival this year: Terrence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane are doing a Coltrane and Miles Davis Centennial tribute. The New Orleans based big band Trumpet Mafia is doing a Miles Davis tribute with guest Keyon Harold. Maurice Brown is also usually the co-leader, along with Ashlin Parker. New Orleans based saxophonists Ricardo Pascal (Jason Marsalis trio/Mahmoud Chouki New World Ensemble), Trevarri Huffboone (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) and Derek Douget (Ellis Marsalis Quintet/ Herlin Riley Quartet/ Jason Marsalis Quintet) present Love is Supreme, A tribute to John Coltrane.

I liked him in Don Pullen's Afro Brazilian Connection and the only time I saw Don Cherry live, he was on saxophone with Ed Blackwell at the Village Vanguard. That was two great sets of music. Sad news.

I recollect seeing him a couple of times one week at the Iridium, and he was only the third best soloist in his own band, but that was because he had Geri Allen and James Spaulding in the band.
