Why would I want to read an essay trashing one of my favorite players?
-
It wasn't well publicized at all, just a small note in the back of the Morning News entertainment guide. The concert is put on by the Dallas Black Academy of Arts and Letters, with a very reasonable ticket price of only $15. They apparently put on another concert I missed and would have liked to have seen last November, Texas tenors with Marshal Ivery, Shelley Carroll and Rachella Parks. The hardest part was finding the small theater in the gigantic (and virtually deserted) Dallas Convention Center.

Charnett Moffett appeared last night at the Clarence Muse Theater in Dallas and is also there tonight. Mr. Moffett performed on accoustic bass, bass guitar, and piccolo bass guitar. His band consisted of his sister Charisse on vocals, wife Angela spoken word, Amareia Moffett (who appeared to be 10 or 11) on keyboards, and Charnett Max Moffett (also a youngster) on drums. Mr. Moffett performed primarily songs from his outstanding latest CD, For the Love of Peace, along with a few new pieces. The concert was simply terrific in every way. Mr. Moffett to my mind is the preeminent bassist in jazz today, and this skill was fully on display last night. The varied sounds and textures he achieved during a two hour concert, primarily featuring the bass as the lead instrument, was simply amazing. The theater had a good sized crowd but was not overflowing as should have been the case given the quality of the music. The whole affair had a very pleasing atmosphere, as if one were invited to the home of the Moffett family for a private concert given by its now grown-up child prodigy bassist. Anyone who loves jazz and is located in Dallas is making a mistake if they don't attend this concert tonight.

I like Roy Campbell quite a bit and have seen him live three times--the best was his quartet Shades of Trane, at the Alterknit Theater in the Knitting Factory. I prefer his two Delmark dates (with Zane Massey, another really fine player), La Tierra Del Fuego and New Kingdom.

I haven't heard much, but do recall seeing him in the David Murray Octet (with Julius Hemphill) sometime in the mid-1980s. It was a great group and he impressed me.

I have that on LP also. As I recall, there was one track that reallly blew me away--The Misused Blues (I think)--which is Ornette sounding like the deepest blues saxophonist I've ever heard.

A musician sells their CDs through CD Baby. Someone buys a CD through CB Baby and says they really like it and emails the artist, asking to buy 100 copies for resale, inquiring regarding the price. The artist sets a price (say $500), and the buyer comes back and says that's fine, I have a business associate in the same city as you who owes me money; he will pick up the CDs and give you a money order for $2100. Kindly cash the money order and send me $1500 in cash through Western Union. I realize the CD business is probably full of flakes, but I find this proposal to be highly suspicious. Has anyone been approached through CD Baby for this kind of deal? I suspect that the money order might well be bad (or stolen), and that the result is the artist is out $1500. Has anyone ever done a CD retailing deal like this?

There's the Candid Fables of Faubus. Also, an alternative version Scenes in the City was issued on the recent Tijuana Moods reissue. Cumbia and Jazz Fusion has a spoken word interlude. I also recollect there being a spoken word piece on Music Written For Monterey 1965.

In this case, don't listen to 'em.

... any albums, other than those I've listed, where he has a solo feature? I have Charles' Tentet album, but don't recall that he solos. (I don't think he does.) I'll have to give it a spin. I think he also solos on the Mingus Savoy recordings, from 1954.

It's a very good recording. Terence Blanchard sounds outstanding as the featured sideman.

I was wondering if Wes recorded as a co-leader?
-
I also found several Xanadu CDs recently in the Dallas (Northwest Highway) Half Price Books, for $4.99.

I recently came across a new copy of her last CD, This is Me, in a used CD store. Overall, it's a commercial/smooth jazz type of recording; however, there are three tracks on it that are worthwhile, so it is worth seeking out if you have it all and want more (like I do).

Transitions has the same group as Catwalk and is very good.
-
He also plays on the 1969 impulse recording Crisis. Is this one Now fairly rare? I recall a great version of Broken Shadows on this LP.

Here's a link to a collection of reviews of his latest CD. http://www.piadrum.com/charnett_moffett_re...prov%20Magazine

Thanks. I'm impressed by Ted Kendall's work on Django in Rome.

Django died in 1953. I know when Django died. I'd recommend actually watching the videos. Of course, my apologies for being a know-it-all dunce. Speaking of Django, what are the best collections of his music to acquire? I have the Proper box and recently acquired Django in Rome, a JSP box set. Any other suggestions?

I just happened to notice that Charnett Moffett is making a rare live appearance in Dallas, at the Clarence Muse Cafe Theater, Friday and Saturday, February 18 and 19. There are no other details, but as a sideman, Mr. Moffett has put on some astonishing performances. The Moffett Familly Jazz Band, which played at the Caravan of Dreams a couple of times years ago (including one set with Ornette Coleman) was one of the most exciting groups I've ever heard live. He also made appearances at the Caravan with Tony Williams and Wynton Marsalis. His most recent recording as a leader, For the Love of Peace, is rather outstanding. I'm excited to see again the gentleman who, to my tastes, is the most compelling bassist in jazz today.

I saw this fascinating article also. Here is a great Mexican singer that I strongly recommend. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/guadalupedivina
