  1. I recently picked this side up for cheap, and have really enjoyed it. He was an amazing musician. And a cool lookin' dude for sure. RIP
  2. The "Oregon Trail model 82", "Black Beauty", "Butterscotch Quail" and "Cooper Flask" all sound identical to me. I guess I must have a tin ear. Maybe the cows can tell the difference. It's an udder mystery.
  3. Interesting....in my dreams no one wants me to play the trombone.
  4. This has been discussed HERE. I'm afraid it's for real. I'm not sure what the blood disorder is, but I heard (via a release attributed to Randy) was that he was going to get chemo and also a bone marrow transplant. We should keep him in our thoughts.
  5. When I was in college I was practicing with a play-a-long recording and noticed my roomate's cocker spaniel Sonny standing in the doorway listening. I went back to playing, and when I looked back the dog had left the room but in the spot where he was standing was a fresh steaming pile of poo. Everybody's a friggin' critic!
  6. Here's one source for you............. Check out the "used and new" section. I've been ordering things from these independent sellers and have had no problems.

  8. Me too bro! (hence the ) I use the word "sides" because that's the term used by my jazz "mentors" going way back. I'm a terminal hipster doofus.
  9. Miles' Cellar Door Sessions.
  10. Obvious nickname? Hmmm...........depends.
  11. Sign me up. Nominees- Bill Evans Verve Tetanus Special Herbie Hancock Plastic Where-The-Hell-Do-I-Store-This nightmare Charlie Christian Suspended Frustration box Norman Granz Verve Jams All-Fall-Out-The-Back set Charlie Parker Verve "Altoids" tin Great music, strange packaging. Feel free to add your favorites. Edit: To be fair, the Hancock did eventually come out in a long box, but still, what were they thinking the first time around?
  12. It's been awhile since I started a birthday thread, so I'm about due. But this isn't about ME. It's about our friend BEBOP. May you have a VERY Happy Birthday, Bebop, and many more. Your handle is also the name of a tune that's really fun to play- especially the intro. ...and of course you are entitiled to your requisite party smilies....
  13. Sorry I blew up.
  14. One more thing- if Deep was still here he'd probably call you Kalo-pectate. So there.
  15. Hey, Kalo- I just "looked you up" and you're only three years younger than me! Miles was playing standards at medium tempos during BOTH our births. So don't cop that 'tude with me!
  16. OK, junior. Now get the hell outta my yard.
  17. Oh great, as if I'm not already spending too much on sides. I'm not going to even look. I'm not. I'm putting my fingers in my my ears and going LALALALA. Oh wait, that doesn't work here. Link, please. Oh wait, you've already provided one. You bastard.
  18. BTW, I guess I must be the last person to realize that James Doohan didn't actually have a Scottish accent. I guess I never saw him outside of the Star Trek stuff.
  19. Hmmmmm..........are there any of those "anonymous" crew members that used to beam down and were always the first to go? If I was Shatner or Nimoy I'd start hanging out with those guys.
  20. Great to see ol' Metamorpho. I started out a big DC fan- Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, Hawkman, Justice League, etc. Eventually I became more of a Marvel fan. How do you guys compare the two "schools"? Artwork? Stories? Interesting characters? Kind of a Ford vs. Chevy polarization. I enjoyed both. This thread makes me wish I'd have held on to my collection. Damn!
  21. The Big Beat is one of my favorite Blakey sides. The tunes are all great, and it swings like a mofo. Lee plays some of his greeeziest stuff on record on Dat Dere. Great version of Paper Moon, and Lester Left Town has become a jazz standard in many circles. Great stuff. It's a must-have IMHO.
  22. Of all the pop-star-sings-jazz-standards projects the ones I find most offensive BY FAR are Rod Stewart's. I'm offended that I hear them everywhere I go and that they are being passed off as jazz. "Look! I can sing jazz, too! It's not so hard! Aren't I great? Now where's my damn money?" The way he butchers the intricate and challenging melodies of so many great tunes just proves the opposite IMHO. That raspy no-discernible-pitch voice reminds me of listening to a radio when the station's not quite tuned in. Or my garbage disposal when I put chunky leftovers in it. And people are eating this shit up (hopefully no one here). I usually don't choose to participate in threads that diss others, but I'll make an exception here. Stay in your own damn yard.
  23. Interesting. How do you know that?
