  2. Not all of Stanley Cowell's CDs did a lot for me. I just sold a few that I considered dull. The three Steeplechase CDs I kept and that I would recommend by Cowell are: Sienna (trio session) Departure #2 (trio session) Angel Eyes (solo piano) Not too long ago the Japanese Venus label put out a very good trio CD by Stanley Cowell called "Dancers In Love". There are also two very nice Cowell trio CDs on the D.I.W. label. Close To You Alone We Three Peter F

    Peter Bernstein

Over Labor Day weekend I attended the Vail Jazz Party in Colorado. Peter Bernstein was there as part of Jimmy Cobb's Mob. Over the course of the 4 day event i had the opportunity to hear Bernstein play numerous times with a broad range of musicians including organ player Reuben Wilson, vocalist and piano player Dena De Rose, Eric Alexander, Hilton Ruiz, and many others. Peter Bernstein demonstrated the ability to fit well with every group. His solos swing, have depth, and are melodic and tasteful. In summary, Bernstein is (in my opinion) one of the very best jazz guitar players on the scene today. Peter F
  4. I believe Cannonball's best recordings are on Riverside. It's hard to find anything less than damn good from that period. He also has some fine things on Savoy and EmArcy. Cannonball's Capitol period and beyond produced much less consistent music. Some of his albums on Capitol I like, but others don't compare to his Riverside material. I do recommend the recent re-issue on Capitol of Cannonball Live with Ernie Andrews. This is the best ernie Andrews I have heard and Cannonball wails. Peter F
  5. Paul, I agree that Clark Terry's "Duke With A Difference" is a fine recording. That CD recorded July 29 and September 6, 1957 is on my shelf right next to a Clark Terry recording I like even more. I am referring to "Serenade To A Bus Seat" that has Clark joined by Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. This session was recorded earlier that same year in April 1957. Both Terry recordings are well worth getting. Peter F
  6. A CD I like quite a lot is "Stephane Grappelli/Hank Jones - London Meeting" on theString label. The first 8 tracks have Stephane, Hank, Jimmie Woode and Alan Dawson. Tracks 9-11 have Stephane, Roland Hanna, Bucky Pizzarelli, George Duvivier, and Oliver Jackson. This is a highly tasty outing by all concerned. Peter F
  7. It is very surprising that after all these responses I don't recall seeing anyone mention Jon Eardley? Jon is best known for his recordings with Gerry Mulligan. He also recorded with Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, and has a Prestige session under his own name. However, the guy I believe to be most underrated is Bill Hardman. I recall going to a club in New York city some years ago and seeing a marvelous quintet with Bill hardman, Junior Cook, Walter Bishop,Jr., Paul Brown, and Leroy Williams. Hardman truly knocked me out that evening. Hardman is on a number of recordings with Jackie Mclean, with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and recordings under his own name on Savoy and Muse. Other trumpet players I consider especially underrated are: Tommy Turrentine Lonnie Hillyer Ray Nance Carmell Jones Joe Gordon Thad Jones Peter F
