  1. I just put it into my PC and it opened up Windows media player on its own. I am copying it into my (Media Player) library to see what happens. But I don't hear any flaws or glitches as its playing on the DVD-Rom on my PC. The soundfile in the Media library came off without a hitch either. I might waste one or two blanks to see what happens. I'm just curious and I'll chalk it up as OCD. It did cross my mind that this would be a release they would try to "sneak" copy protection on. I second-guessed myself when I didn't hear about any problems with it besides mine. Then again, I'm hardly in the loop of people who make copies of this stuff to pass around anyway! Slightly paronoid that the EMI police are coming for me... he he he!
  2. I bought it from my friends brick and mortar store (PA. USA). I had it the day it came out but just noticed the copy problem on Monday. It says : Manufactured by Capital Records, Inc., 1750 N. Vine Street, Hollywood CA 90028 I combed over the dismal packaging and couldn't see anything specific about copy protection though.
  3. This may already be discussed but the new Beatles Cd seems to have ccopy protection on it. I tried copying the Disc on my PC (Easy CD Creator) to play in the car and the program aborted on the last track. I then tried copying it on my standalone and it finshed copying the disc. About four tracks play O.K. but the rest of the tracks are plagued with digital "distortion" . Did EMI slip us the ol' Copy protection? Anyone else have any experience with this disc or any new EMI? If so, its the Beatles so it was a must have for me. But even though this is the first CD I've burned in months, (and only for my own use), this may pursuade me to purchase less. I wonder if watermarking is the next step? FYI, I did then make an analog copy. To these ears it sounds as good as the original disc. Not for Nothin'..... Happy Thanksgiving, Gary P.S. sorry if this was discussed previously here or elsewhere and seems redundant to discuss again. Just wanted to give a heads ups.
  4. I've been pretty busy, so I don't think I've logges on for a month or more. Wasn't there a forum on politics here? I never really paid toomuch attention to it but it seems like a forum or two are different.
  5. I've had this one for a few years too on vinyl. The title tune 'The Flip' was available on one of the those Blue Note Funk/Soul compilations about four or five years ago. Hank plays solid, but at least on the title track, this is not one of Philly Joe's better recorded moments. Yeah, he comes close to closing down the tune a few times, but its the accents that he is trying to sync with;often times being between an 8th note to a 16th note behind the whole figure, that really makes it unenjoyable for me to listen to. Anyway, while I never asked Philly Joe about this record( I didn't even know about it), I know that this was around a time where he was dealing with his "demons", so to speak. I've certainly heard him playing better. So yeah, as a Mobley fan, I had to update it, but Philly Joe definately had better moments, IMO. Then again, if you ever saw the Grateful Dead live, you might be familiar with the potential trainwreck just waiting to happen, and not cringe at the warts revealed.
  6. Isn't there alleged to be a tape of a Young/Coltrane practice session floating around somewhere? That would be cool to hear. In the liners to 'Mothership' Michael Cuscana writes that no documentation of the events exist. This sounds right, but it could also mean that no known tape exists. It would be nice for something like this to turn up. Also not be off topic, but in the liner notes it also said that Larry died in the hospital due to negligence. What was he in the hospital for? And what exactly happened?
  7. I noticed distortion kick in too. It didn't sound like it was recorded too hot, so I'm guessing it was a problem with the tape or transfer.
  8. wow, i never heard that one. so i had to try it. funny, but the only thing that happened was the sudden urge to smash off that damn shift key.
  9. Thanks Free For All. I hadn't seen anything about it in my last Mosaic Flyer and it had me puzzled.
  10. So what is the deal with the Jack Johnson box? Is this out, finally? And where did you order or pre-order it? I haven't heard anything about this for months...
  11. Nice CJ! I always enjoy what you have to offer on the boards. You manage to bring up some interesting points and questions. It is obvious that you have a real interest in the subject, and that can be infectous! Good luck with your new gig!
  12. I've never heard Sweetnighter. For some reason I keep passing it up, probably when I'm at a point where I've just had my fill of WR. Black Market is perhaps my favorate Jaco WR. Killer bass lines.
  13. Thanks David for that link. Sound quality and marking are my main concerns too. When I see that indication label, I'll just put the disc back on the shelf. As simple as that. I don't think Europeans are alone. It is not a matter of if, but when. EMI has gotten enough of my money, already. Speaking for myself, I buy too many Cd's. This will help me to stop cold turkey. And I understand that they are giving "alternatives" to play the CD on a PC, or if it doesn't play in the car, etc. Ya know what? We have enough stress in our lives without messing around trying to get a CD to play on a machine, and looking for one that will. I don't even feel like screwing around with software. I'm not playing games. I suggested on the All About Jazz site, that listeners should send a letter stating their objection to Blue Note. Its worth the 37 cents IMO, and whatever it would cost from Europe. I say a letter rather than an e-mail or phone calls because it has a better chance of getting read and acted on. If nothing happens, fugg'em.
  14. This blows. I have NO intention of copying these CDs, or any inprint CDs for anyone. And I hope Blue Note knows that I have dozens of people breaking down my door because they actually give a crap that Dexter Gordon (Who?) has a new reissue out. C'mon, besides us, how many people have droves of friends asking to copy their jazz collection. With Jazz sales down, I'd hope that Blue Note can figure out that most people just don't care about it as an art or entertainment. I'm sure most of you feel the same way and your not copying dozens of handout CDRs either. I feel this is just another example of a large corporation strongarming its potential customer base. What I do want is to be able to play my music on any machine I have or will have. I would like to be "able" to make an exact backup of it, in case it does get scratched. I would like my music to be as clear and natural as possible. I would like to see more attempts in improving sound such as with superior formats. I'm supporting SACD, but if Swinging Swede is correct when he says that these regular CDs aren't even Redbook standard Cd's, I feel the industry is just moving backwards. Its like I said, I'm not in the habit of burning in-print or obtainable titles for people and would rather not get copies of CDrs either. It would be nice if a company could get it right, and stop looking at its "consumers" as thieves.
  15. If you are really strapped for time and don't need Hi end quality for every listening, try this. One thing that I found that works well for me is waking up to a CD on a CD alarm clock. Definately LoFi at its lowest point, but I usually leave it in for a week and get to listen to it 5 to 7 times. I make the decision based whether or not I really like the CD in the first place. If I do, then I play it for wake up music. I used to like to burn a copy or dub a tape for the car. Then again, a favorate Blue Note might be in the car tape deck for 2 weeks before I change it, so the same ones still get played over and over.
  16. I have a about 20 CDs to I haven't cracked open yet. I have another big box that got delivered to the drum studio about a week ago which I'm trying to wittle down one at a time. The big problem isn't really about the buying and listening ratio as much as it is "if I don't buy this now I'll never see it again', which has happened to many times. In the long run I find it better to bite the bullet and buy it now rather than pay double later. Eventually i get ariound to listening to it. However on rare occassions I've found something that is still wrapped from months before. Even those are great when you are short on bread and want something new to listen to. Lps on the other hand just pile up. I have bought about 60 records in the last two months. Haven't yet been able to burn them yet! I'm still planning on scouring for vinyl this weekend. As long as your not blowing hundreds of dollars you don't have and your getting your bills paid your O.K.
  17. Do I need yet another special CD player in order to play the vinyl layer?
  18. So no-one is happy at all with the SACD layer? How is the CD layer? Is is better than the Ultimate Blue Train? How does the CD layer compare to the new RVG? Are they the same? If not is the RVG better than the CD layer? (I like some of the closer stereo RVGs). I can't play my SACDs right now anyway. If it is that poor and the CD layer doesn't redeem it, I may just return it before I open it for the RVG version.
  19. Has anyone had the chance to listen to the new RVG and the SACD version of Blue Train? I don't mean to compare the SACD layer to the RVG issue. Instead I'm curious if they threw the RVG issue on as the CD layer of this Hybrid. I haven't cracked it open yet. But I did notice that RVG did the SACD layer in addition to the CD layer. It is not labeled as an RVGSACD!
  20. I just upgraded my Collectors choice of Art Blakey, Indestructible. Haven't cracked it open yet. I also bought the Blue Note SACD Blue Train. Have to check that out with RVG looking as if he had his hand in the DSD process. Non-Jazz. Captain Beefheart and the Magic band, Grow Fins Box-set and Dust Sucker, Bat Chain Puller, which was some major chump-change.
  21. What's even more odd is the fact that all of Garrison's posts were made in the Musician's forum and he was asking about playing B3 and carried on like he knew everyone. He also hasn't posted since March. Something is fishy here. Hadi-Blues e-mailed me one of the posts that was posted under my BN name, that concered a Philly Joe story. While this event did happen, it is not the kind of thing I would have posted in public. That post was from a private e-mail between myself and one other person, that was saved on my hard-drive, like all my other e-mails, I send and receive. I just feel that by focusing on someones hard times it can have a way of overshadowing what they managed to acomplish. Its nothing important, but it was written as a private e-mail and is not relevant to the thread. B-3r, while I realize that anyone can sign on as any name they like, considering the circumstances, at least, can the PJJ post be deleted as this is not a coincidence? Or because the person utilized an e-mail address from a hot computer, can you remove those posts?
  22. I hope I don't owe anything! I should have been settled up with any trades. I'm pretty sure the last thing I sent out was a Max Roach video at X-mas. Still, if I sold someone the le Bec Fin restaurant, I'll try to deliver on it. Who knows? I'm still getting multiple charges for Fisting girl site!
  23. I thought it was just my temporary machine being non-compatible. I'm using a very old Mac Quadra and this is limiting many of the sites I am visiting as well as the content of e-mail (Eudora Light) I can send and receive.
  24. Yep, it is creepy. My real e-mail address is taken here, and also what was used for a mess of other things. That's the real problem.
  25. Thanks Alexander and Hans. Its good to talk to you guys again. Hadi emailed me a post on this site that someone must of did a cut and paste of a Philly Joe story, I wrote to someone when we were discussing how arrtists are often forget. It looks just like what I wrote, and definately my story, but it posted! But I can't even use my own e-mail address to register on this site!!! I guess I did learn that we leave ourselves more open than we think we do. Nuts... Take Care
