  1. 150 pitches in a game in which you give up 8 walks - that's just crazy. I know Arizona is going nowhere but an 8 BB no-hitter? I think there are different types of no-hitters. When you walk that many and pitch so inefficiently, you shouldn't be out there. Its called a staff no-hitter. I hope he doesn't suffer for having insisted on this chance at a fleeting moment of glory.
  2. What the hell is the D-Back manager doing? Edwin Jackson was at 98 pitches heading into the seventh, with a 7 walk no-hitter going. Now he's over 130 through 8. WTF? Does he have a picture of his manager screwing a dog and he's using that to force him to let him try to finish this? And if I'm not mistaken, didn't they trade some pretty good talent to get the young pitcher? When his arm falls off in July and he sees Dr. Jobe or Dr Andrews, what will they say then? Unbelievable.
  3. Doesn't fit the rules! Name your first recording purchased that was led by Joe Henderson, or name your first led by Kenny Dorham, Andrew Hill, Eddie Khan or Pete La Roca.
  4. From Basra, I'll take Joe Henderson, for Our Thing. Now someone can tell us about their first Andrew Hill recording.
  5. Once again: You can post a different "first recording you bought" led by the same artist posted immediately before OR You can post a "first recording you bought" led by any artist on the recording posted immediately before Its not a straight up "my first recording by ____" thread!
  6. We skipped over my effort to get out of the hard bop sweet spot so I'll give my first Jackie Mac leader date: Bluesnik
  7. I'm going to go with first KD recording. A hard call, its either this one or the Showboat recording on Time but I am almost certain it was Quiet Kenny. One listen to Blue Spring Shuffle and I was hooked. With Tommy Flanagan, PC and Art Taylor. My first, and only, album under Art Taylor's name is Taylor's Tenors, and it's a great 'un! I'm going to try to move this forward by going with my first Art Taylor: Mr. AT with Marc Cary, Willie Williams, Abraham Burton and Tyler Mitchell. Hope I haven't stopped things in their tracks but there are always other Taylor recordings to get back to the hard bop sweet spot.
  8. I'm going to go with first KD recording. A hard call, its either this one or the Showboat recording on Time but I am almost certain it was Quiet Kenny. One listen to Blue Spring Shuffle and I was hooked. With Tommy Flanagan, PC and Art Taylor.
  9. Good one. I gotta open things up by going with my first Tina Brooks: The Complete Tina Brooks on Mosaic. All those Blue Note stalwarts to choose from, if you wish ...
  10. Well, its an estimate of your first, you don't have to be certain that you're remembering correctly. My first Blakey is sort of an odd one in terms of expectations. A Jazz Message on Impulse. This was at the time I was heavily into Coltrane and I had moved into the Impulse years. So I picked this one up because Tyner was on it. Hey folks, lots of possibilities for first Stitt recording!
  11. Yup. From Brilliant Corners I am going to go with Sonny Rollins, my first Sonny recording was A Night at the Village Vanguard.
  12. Well then I am going with Chamber's Music cuz it really is the first PC-as-leader date I bought, and it brings us back to Coltrane!
  13. My first Strozier was Fantastic Frank Strozier with Wynton Kelly, Booker Little, PC and Jimmy Cobb.
  14. I'm sure Paypal will fix the problem. Seller sounds like a piece of work.
  15. Well "My first _________" would just be a disjointed list of whatever, and to what end? I don't know what end this brings up except its sort of inspired by the Name Three People thing and the fact that many of us discovered more music by following up on other dates by the same musicians. Anyway, let's get away from Booby. My first Woody Shaw was Master of The Art with Turre, Mulgrew Miller, Booby, Tony Reedus and Stafford James.
  16. Bobby Hutcherson is on This is Billy Mitchell, and believe it or not my first leader date by Booby is Cruisin the Bird (Landmark) So Ralph Moore, Buddy Montgomery, Victor Lewis or Rufus Reid or of course another Booby leader date "fits".
  17. No Chris, your post is fine. Thad plays on the Katz record. Billy Mitchell is on The Magnificent Thad: Al Grey/Billy Mitchell Sextet (Argo)
  18. Dizzy Gillespie - In the Beginning (Prestige 24030) (My first purchase of a record including John Lewis and Milt Jackson, but it's a 2-record set with lots of different sidemen on all those tracks so there should be plenty of directions to go on from ) This still isn't kosher. Out of the MJQ record, one could post a different MJQ as your "first" or a "first" recording led by Milt Jackson, John Lewis, Percy Heath or Connie Kay. I realize I didn't make that clear I presumed it was implied. If we go by records that one of the musicians appeared on, I think its too wide-ranging. The idea is your first exposure to leader dates. Is Tony Scott on the Dizzy LP Steve posted? If not, this isn't kosher either. To repeat the rules: You may post a different "first" recording by the same artist as the prior post. You may post a different "first" recording by any member of the group on that previously posted recording, so long as he is the leader of the new recording. Thanks for your attention.
  19. Can't say that I agree with David - I mean, I'm the former Gene Harris Fanatic and even I didn't hold onto his crappy mid-70s BNs. And there are plenty here who have maybe slightly less intense enjoyment from other artists who have kept only the best of their recordings. And being inarticulate about music - how common is that when you consider how many of us aren't musicians and don't write about music for a living?
  20. Modern Jazz Quartet, The Last Concert
  21. I thin perhaps some didn't read the "rules" that I posted: and no "going back" - its like the Name Three People - if something new was posted, you can't go four posts back and restart it. I think the best way to make the connections clear is to identify the new artist as having been on the session of the prior CD. Seems to me that the last valid post was Gentle Side of John Coltrane, so let's continue from there: John Coltrane, Blue Train
  22. I don't know if this will be interesting to anyone else, but I thought it might be fun to post your first recording by a particular artist, with the post that follows limited to A. Your first recording by the same artist - if different OR B. Your first recording by anyone who appeared on the previous named recording Edit to add: It must be a leader date by the sideman, not just any date at all. The idea is exposure to recordings as a leader rather than any recording at all. So, if you don't have a recording by the artist or any of his sidemen, you can't post (if the thread moves into Free Jazz I'll be in trouble). But any sideman is fair game, so there's sort of a "degree of separation" element that should bring the thread into and out of different subgenres and might be fun to follow. Of course for many of us it may not be possible to know for sure what the first recording was but I don't think absolute accuracy is the point. Edit to add: To make the connections clear, if posting about a new artist, mention that he played on the previously posted recording. So, VB might have posted: I'll start with the recording I saw in a catalog that triggered the idea. My first recording by Art Farmer: Farmer's Market It had Hank Mobley and Kenny Drew and that was good enough for me. Anyone interested in keeping this going?
  23. Pretty good summary from a Wimbeldon blogger for the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jun/23/wimbledon-2010-tennis-live
  24. Isner finally gets to match point and doesn't waste it this time, great return at his feet set up a backhand pass up the line. 70-68 11 hours and five minutes, they just said. I'm gonna take a nap.
  25. Here we go again. 60-60, and no Centre Court either. And I wonder if I was wrong about Isner's exhaustion yesterday - he moved about as slowly on the changeover today.
