Ever hear the phrase you have to spend money to make money? Or did I miss something and the football program has net profits of 200 million? And for better or worse, when money like that is at stake, it takes serious money to retain or hire topnotch talent - just like when Jim Carrey makes 20 million a picture. And don't fool yourself, University President ain't a bad gig either. I'll bet the UT President is making at least half what the head coach does, but no one questions that.

Artists you know well but have never really liked
Dan Gould replied to David Ayers's topic in Artists
So is it fair to assume in general that you don't care for big greasy bluesy tenor sax? Or is Turrentine specifically? -
Sorry that article says precious little as far as I am concerned. What exactly is the point? That they get an unfair tax advantage? Unfair to whom, anyway? Its debatable in the first place, and its really immaterial to the issue you raised anyway. And the article confirms what I said - that big-time athletic programs support non-revenue earning sports, as well as the school in general. And it points out another way it does that which I didn't mention: That army of tutors are most if not all from the College of Education. Future teachers getting experience tutoring idiot athletes. And future teachers who don't have to rely on the Education department for financial support, they get employed by the athletic department. Meaning more money for other elements of the school's educational mission.
-
And what convinces you of this? Major college football is a huge money-maker for universities. Even if the money raised supports non-revenue enhancing sports, is that so bad? That right there is more money for the academic mission if track and field or gymnastics isn't asking for it. I'd agree with you that it sucks if you said that all this revenue is made off of students who don't receive any compensation aside from room and board and free tuition and are restricted in the jobs they can take and the money they can be paid outside of football. But are their investors in major universities who take out the profits from football TV rights money? The money goes into the university coffers - made off of the broken legs and ruptured knees of the athletes.

Is Kendrick Hamel's first name? Because certainly even with the Phils stinking up the joint for a few weeks the odds are in their favor based on the pitching match-up. No way Kelly gets called up. He's struggled in AA up until his last two starts and he's on a very restrictive pitch count. He's more likely to spend the season in Portland, although I guess its possible he gets a taste of Fenway in September. And what is really screwy is that the Globe is reporting that Dice-K says he feels "great", so why the hell did they DL him (Atchison was already up from Pawtucket, replacing Joe Nelson who was DFA'd)? Now they've got a hole in their rotation for at least two turns and no one to fill it. As for Bowden, he's sucked so far this year - and I don't think anyone was ever that high on him, not seriously. He's our Ian Kennedy, OK stuff but nothing outstanding. He has to have perfect command to survive in the bigs. In all honesty I'd like to see them bring up Doubront, who has continued to dominate at AAA. I don't think there's any harm in letting him get his first major league start.

I am fairly confident that no one is dismembering the ACC (hey, that word fits in two different ways!). And I am real confident that no one thinks the Mountain West deserves a dedicated spot in a playoff system. Any playoff system will end up depending on some BCS formula for the top 8 or top 16 teams.

Always late to the party but  -
WTF? Miami and FSU are in the ACC and I haven't heard anything about the ACC getting raided by other conferences. And I'm totally clueless why you think that three super conferences have anything to do with how a playoff system would be configured. I am almost as clueless about why the Big 12 is getting split apart. What was the problem that the biggest schools wanted to be wooed into joining some other conference, other than the appeal of scheduling games against USC or Ohio State or Michigan? The Big East was Miami, sometimes BC and Syracuse and it made sense to go join the bigger schools. Same when FSU joined up. Was the Big 12 getting squat for its TV rights? This whole situation merits a big WTF?

Marla beat me to it. Thanks Brownie, I am looking forward to hearing this!

Oh, and how about Adrian Beltre, who has single-handedly broken 9 ribs of Red Sox left fielders? Since the bats are going to work again they should enjoy this while it lasts. But Ellsbury broke another rib when he played three games before going back on the DL and is now out until the ASB, minimum. And Hermida now is out too after his ill-fated collision with Beltre's knee. And Dice-K is gone for at least 15 days, Beckett has just now started a throwing program and is gone til the ASB. What the fuck are they going to do? They have exactly one decent pitcher at Pawtucket, and he's a 21 year old I am pretty sure they don't want to rush this much: Felix Doubrant.

I was going to post about this kid. Nava was cut as a walk-on at the University of Santa Clara and became the equipment manager (and laundry guy). Blue Jays declined to sign him after a try-out. Starts his professional career with the Chico Outlaws (Independent league) and has a 1.100 OPS which I guess got the Red Sox' attention. Spends his age 25 and most of his age 26 seasons at Single A Lancaster and Single A Salem. Now at the age of 27 he gets called up from AAA Pawtucket (.294/.364/.492) and he hits a grand slam on the first pitch he sees in the major leagues. Completely unbelievable. And when you look at his stats you think that maybe this kid really can play and he just needs a chance. I mean, yeah, he put up big numbers at A ball when he was 5 or 7 years older than the competition. But its not like the kid got a lot of chances to play all those years. There's something of a similarity with Brian Daubach (who didn't get a chance to play in the majors til he was 27 and finished that year 4th in the RoY balloting and OPS'd better than 110 three of his first four seasons) but it sure looks like Nava has more pop in his bat than Dauber ever really had. Whatever happens he has a helluva story to tell the grandkids.

Artists you know well but have never really liked
Dan Gould replied to David Ayers's topic in Artists
Yes, and I continue to find it baffling, despite the apparent agreement from the rest of the Organissimo Wise Men . FWIW, in the wake of my LP sales I've been transferring Scott Hamilton LPs and instead of finding it sonic wallpaper I am being pleasantly reminded why I enjoyed his playing right from the get-go. There's something I'm sure you find baffling yourself, Larry. -
Another vote for Silver's Serenade, Patrick.

Artists you know well but have never really liked
Dan Gould replied to David Ayers's topic in Artists
I think this is turning into a typical "I don't care for X" thread when David's question is, "do you own a substantial number of recordings by an artist you don't really like?" So unless flat5 buys or has bought a lot of Scott Hamilton, he doesn't really qualify for the topic at hand. And does Allen keep a lot of Zoot on hand, or does he happen to have some Zoot recordings because he's on with artists that he does like? Like Brad, I tend to not buy or keep artists I don't enjoy. Makes it a lot easier to concentrate on people I do enjoy. -
Hey, he stole that motion from Bugs Bunny!

Lately I've been wondering what the hell I ever heard in Gene Harris. I mean, shit, the dude just plays the blues on damn near every thing, and talk about repeating yourself. -
To throw 98 or better, and follow up with that yacker, is just sick.
-
Short answer: Yes. Slightly longer answer: He's dominated in AA and AAA. Some thought he should have left camp with the club. And, we'll soon find out. Say, would you mind keeping the bats in storage this weekend? We are sending up Lackey, Dice and Wake, and they are a pretty good slump-busting group. Certainly Dice is due for a stinker (and maybe Wake is due for a good 'un but I am kinda doubtful he has many of those left) and Lackey has been barely league average. Thanks for your cooperation.

THE JAZZ CRUSADERS reunion tour
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Thanks for that link, I don't think I was aware of a Frankly Jazz youtube channel. I exchanged emails with Lance Evans, Frank Evans' son, when I stumbled across a website which was never expanded beyond the front page. Cool that he's sharing clips from his dad's show, just wish there were more. -
What exactly makes a jazz cruise nausea-inducing? A jazz (or blues) cruise is the only reason I'd have to get on one of those boats. Much better opportunity to actually talk to the musicians than at a club gig, and on top of all of the scheduled performances they usually jam after the show. Chiaruscoro has released quite a number of enjoyable CDs taken from their jazz cruises - I can think of releases by Nat Adderley, Lou Donaldson, Red Holloway, Al Grey (I think), Junior Mance. so again, what makes this so offensive?

I think its time to shut this down. Evan thinks he's been wronged, Jim doesn't and has Hans' back. There won't be satisfaction for either side so why keep arguing it? I think we should all take to heart the following lessons from this contretemps: 1. Don't post in Offering and Looking For to criticize the prices of anyone's auction or sale. Unwritten rule or not, its now been discussed to death and should be understood by everyone. 2. If you have a problem with a Mod, discuss it via PM. If you are still unhappy, take it to Jim. 3. Don't post PMs without the other person's permission.
-
Why should he acknowledge any such thing when Jim has given his approval for the action Hans took?
