  1. My amateur ears don't hear it either, Guy.
  2. Not to mention the fact that they became such pen pals after both had left the public stage, and this after being at each other's throats when they were. Looking forward to my annual screening of 1776 in a few hours.
  3. The thing is, its a fairly common mispronunciation I've seen/heard so it wouldn't surprise me if its the writer, not the editor's fault.
  4. There's some good advice here, Tom. I wish you the best and I think that once you get over the shock everything will work out for you.
  5. I could never understand why at one used books/music/assorted crap store I used to go to regularly, there was an entire section of Boots Randolph records in the jazz section. I can't imagine that's where his records were placed when Yakkity Sax was on the charts ...
  6. Stanley Turrentine and the under-recorded Dizzy Reece? It's a no-brainer.
  7. I know a few people who have done a season in Alaska and have come back saying that it ain't worth the money!!!! I'm from RI and this series has a sister series called "Lobstermen" (I believe) that documents the lobster boats that leave from Point Judith (Narragansett) RI. I only watched part of it once, but, it's hard, back breaking, dangerous work. Southern New England loses a few fishing boats each year and most towns have a memorial set up for those who never came back. The best parts of "The Perfect Storm" (the book, not the film) was the material about the hazards of commercial fishing and its history.
  8. Yes, thanks. Did you catch the rookie Ellsbury on the dash from second base on the wild pitch? Rangers had a wild pitch? I simply DON'T believe it! Yeah, but how often do you see someone score from second? One of your guys was quoted as saying that even Ichiro wouldn't have scored on that play. The kid already has two infield hits, his first one apparently surprised everyone in the stadium since it was seemingly a routine play. Coco better keep up his solid play, after this taste of the future, the fans may get on him when he slumps again.

  10. I have no doubt that Manny and Papi will get going on the power numbers. I'm pretty sure they've both hit the majority of their homers in the second half of most seasons. There is a piece up on foxsports about Papi and the fact that not only is he not getting fastballs to hit anymore because of Manny's struggles and his success last year, but also that the wind he consistently blown in at Fenway. That figures to change, and as New England heats up in the summer months, the balls will start carrying again. Now as for Andruw - he may just not have the brains to figure out how to get out of this and hit again. At least Manny and Ortiz have good averages, and Papi actually projects to close to 60 doubles on the year. Andruw just looks completely out of it, I'm sorry to say.
  11. Ah, pipe down; you still got one game left to salvage. Now, if we win that one, I may have a coronary. You and me both. Except that the Sox are asking the rookie, Gabbard, to be the stopper, when last time he handed the game to the M's on nothing but walks and HBPs. But, as they say, you never know what may happen. If the Sox do manage to win number 50 in the 81st game, that would put them on pace for a nice round number at the end of the season. The Sox should not have let go Papa Jack , the hitting coach they have now was let go by the Padres last year because they were hitting a combined 252 avaerage ??.......why would the Sox hire this guy ? While I agree that Papa Jack had something to do with the success of the offense before 2006, the fact is that the new hitting coach had the Padres hitting .280 or so away from the offensively challenged Petco. In the end, I don't think Papa Jack or any hitting coach will have much of an effect, especially on a team that is simply slumping. Ortiz' problem isn't the absence of Papa Jack, its Manny's power outage plus a decision by opposing pitchers not to give him anything to hit. But have you noticed that his doubles are way up this year? That's what he's been able to do with the pitches that he gets - more line drives than towering homers.
  12. I never understood why those two classic Jimmy Smith's hadn't gotten the RVG treatment but better late than never. Interesting that the fifties Lee Morgans are coming out. I thought the whole point of the Mosaic sets was that its the sixties releases for people like Mogie and Hank that sell, so the only way to get out the early material is to do the Mosaic. As for the longevity of the RVG series, short of new corporate owners shuttering the operation, I don't see it ending. The whole purpose of the label is to sell the back catalog and hope to have some pop hits from the current roster. Why stop? Unless Kevin has heard Michael saying something that isn't fit for public notice yet ....

  14. Thanks for that. Such a shame the board was down during the BoSox visit to Safeco. Has a manager ever resigned due to "lost passion" during such a winning streak? I'm kind of relived, as I've always felt the M's could do better than Hargrove. Of course they could (and have) done worse too, so I wasn't anxious to have him fired. Still, kind of a weird thing to happen to your team, especially as they're a contender, as improbable as it seems. It may just be a summertime fling, but I'm going to enjoy it! Well, its not often that a manager resigns due to "lost passion" at any time, let alone during the season and in the midst of a long winning streak. This does help in one way: Ichiro was known not to care much for Hargrove; he apparently likes the coach they promoted. This can't help but make it more likely that Ichiro re-signs. That is, if the team keeps this up and either makes the playoffs or generates serious hope that they can contend in the coming years. I'm just glad that you kept it up against the Blue Jays. I don't know how many times I've watched the Sox fold against a mediocre team, then see that mediocre team revert to form as soon as the Yankees show up.
  15. MOTHER FUCKING CHRIST! :rmad: :rmad: Back-to-back 1 run losses to the fucking Rangers? No offense, Al, but there's no fucking excuse to lose games like that to that pitching staff at Fenway. I told a friend that I thought that with the Yankees facing the A's, Twins and Angels, we could put them 15 games back at the break. Not going to happen if we keep fucking around like this. Now, GO M'S, KEEP BEATING THE BLUE JAYS! I guess I'll live with a 10.5 game lead but it sucks when it ought to be 12 or 13.
  16. And most of the double LP was put out on a Drive Archive label CD. I will say this: Every Stanley Turrentine album has that sound. And that's a good thing.
  17. I continue to fail to grasp why this is some epic measure of failure, or loser-dom or something. All it means is that the Phillies are the worst of the teams that can trace their history the longest. BFD.
  18. Yeah, well, thanks for helping me go to sleep with no worries while the Sox are in progress against the Padres. What say we try to make it two in a row tomorrow? With Mussina on the mound and the entire Yankee bullpen used today, you ought to be able to get to them for a few runs, if your pitcher can do his job just a little bit.
  19. I'm number three out of four. In order: My sister has a bachelors and Masters in Architecture. My older brother left Miami University without graduating. I received a BS from Florida State and a Masters from Washington University in St. Louis in Political Science. My younger brother received a Bachelors from Vanderbilt and graduated Law School at William & Mary. I have no idea about IQ scores but its pretty obvious that we're all pretty bright and well educated, and its my younger brother who got into the most elite schools.
  20. No storybook return in his home state for Jon Lester. The Sox announced that Kason Gabbard, who pitched very well in the spring and won a spot start vs the Braves when Beckett was on the DL, will get the call on Tuesday. Not really surprising considering how well he's pitched for the Paw Sox: Not bad for a kid who was flying below everyone's radar last year at AA, they were forced to call him up after all the injuries and got some decent performances from him and he got an important lesson: throw strikes, and you can succeed. Now he looks like a legit prospect, certainly a back of the rotation starter, maybe a number 3 guy at the high end.
  21. Now that I check out some stats, I think if the Sox pitching does its job, the Padres will have a very hard time. They've got exactly one regular hitting above .275, Gonzales at .295. The Sox have five starters at .299 or better (even if one of Youk, Lowell and Papi will have to sit in each game)! And we've got three excellent starters going - Dice carries a 1.80 ERA in June; no one in the NL sees a knuckleball very often; and we all know how Beckett has pitched this year. The odds may not favor it but I could definitely see one or two shutouts this weekend if the bullpen does its job.
  22. Well, moving on to the future and forgetting about the past, I am actually kind of encouraged about this coming weekend series the Yanks have with the Giants. I mean, this will be the only time of the year I will hope that the Giants win, and what better time to do it than after a seven game losing streak? I mean, every game a team loses in a row has to increase the likelihood they'll win the next one, right? Of course, I thought that the Mets would get healthy against the Yanks and look where that got me. But still, the Giants are at home, the Yanks aren't a very good road team, if the Giants have anything going for them its decent starters, so I'll hold out hope that they can take two of three and keep the Bombers treading water or falling further behind. Meanwhile, I have to say that I most prefer tonight's matchup against the Padres, Dice vs Maddux. Don't get me wrong, I admire Maddux enormously. But he has reached the point where he has to be absolutely perfect in order to be successful, and compared to Young and Peavey, he's not nearly as difficult to hit. We've done well against just about every top team we've faced so far, this will be a good test with our best three (available) pitchers going. Just sucks that all the games start at 10 PM except for Sunday.
  23. Same here, albeit almost 30 years later. 26 years later for me, and I don't know if I was looking for more depth than rock 'n' roll, but I know I was bored by what was on the radio.
  24. Apparently he said that his splitter was moving east-west instead of north-south (which happens to be the same explanation Schilling gave for one of his bad starts). 1-2 on the year and he hasn't even faced an AL team yet. Ya gotta love it.
  25. BTW, great video and performance from Detroit on that media page.
