Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I've listened to some of them above. Quite a different pianist to the earlier style. Far less hard bop and far more swing and stride in his later style. Some very good stuff, if not quite such a jolt as the older self-titled record that made me first pay notice I've been quite interested in the Scott Hamilton ones. I don't like Hamilton very much as a rule, but he has a harder edge on Handful of Stars than I had expected, and plays some unexpected stuff in his solos. Zoot's Hymns has a tenor player on it called John Doughten. A completely new name to me. Seems to have released only a single leader record. Does he have much of a presence?

Thanks! I generally don't mind Venus' covers, but the two quartet dates are, not just porny, and awkward, but also ugly. Feel free to point me elsewhere.

Oh wow, this one is great. I'd never heard of it before.

Sonore (Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark and Peter Brotzmann) - No One Ever Works Alone I've been listening to a lot of WSQ recently and the difference between that supergroup and this supergroup is pretty stark. Much more so than WSQ v Rova. The different ways that the European* free jazz musicians handle counterpoint and rhythm really shows through in this context. Edit: Ken Vandermark of course is not European, but it is also hard to see him as the lead here.

If I were to go for these, would that be a good choice? Time on My Hands (Arbors) Speaking of Jobim (Sunnyside) A Handful Of Stars (Venus) - A Hamilton / Peplowski one Bewitched (Venus) - A trio one Or would you substitute any of these? Sorry to be asking for specific recommendations, but I want a nice drink, rather than a pub crawl.

Thanks! And that Flophouse interview was what led to me listening to him! It's a good piece and a good extract. Of the Venuses, with which you start? I notice that they're all streamable, so the old availability issues don't apply.

Pretty much a new artist to me. I hadn't really clocked him before. But I like what I am hearing a lot. I'd be interested to know forum members' recommendations for him. Ideally, recommendations for specific albums from different periods, rather than e.g. all the Venues.

I find I like her when I like her. Records like this or No Try No Fail are among my favourite ever. But then she has released plenty of records with which I can't really connect
