  1. Reading the Kalevala for the first time. I'm not sure what I was expecting - probably more Ossian goes to Iceland. I wasn't expecting a wry Scandi Hiawatha. Really enjoying it in the Bosley translation.
  2. My neighbour is a retired dustman with a "colourful" past. He reads crime novels and then gives them to me. They're a varied bunch quality-wise. Michael Connelly was the one that absolutely blew me away. Literary level writing, good plots, and, as a special treat, lots of jazz. I gifted them on to my dad who got similarly obsessed.
  3. Joe Cuba – Cocinando La Salsa (Cookin' The Sauce)
  4. I'm a big fan of Savage Night by James Thompson.
  5. Pinduca – Carimbó E Sirimbó Do Pinduca
  6. Luca Tilli, Sebi Tramontana and Steve Beresford – Flying Slippers Now on to this fantastic one: Mestre Geraldo E Sua Bateria – Batucada Genial
  7. Dom Um Romao and Jadir De Castro – Batucada Seculo 21
  8. Fela Ransome Kuti & His Koola Lobitos – Fela Ransome Kuti & His Koola Lobitos
  9. Enoch Light And The Command All-Stars – Persuasive Percussion - Vol. 4
  10. The Incredible Naná with Agustin Pereyra Lucena – The Incredible NANÁ with Agustín Pereyra Lucena
  11. Capt. John Handy - All Aboard A four horn front line and ragtimey piano makes for a pretty indigestible record.
  12. Oh no! That's too young I was listening to his excellent work on that Charlie Byrd record just last night.
  13. It was triggered by listening to that new Abhorrent Expansive record with Craig Taborn on. I always enjoy this one, although I rarely remember to listen to it. In the fusiony death metal world I tend to reach for Gorguts and Cynic first.
  14. Fantastic! When I upgraded it was like having a whole new LP collection!
  15. Adia Vanheerentals – Taking Place Solo soprano in specific settings. Much more about the settings that the sonorities, so it distinguishes itself from the Lao Dans or John Butchers of the world. Those guys never played to a bunch of chickens. I'm really astonished at how hard the Teagarden Verves are to find second hand. I'd have assumed that this music shifted units, but I'm not sure how many times I've encountered them in the wild.
  16. Roland Prince - Color Visions
  17. Spinning this one at the moment: Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound X – El Progreso
  18. Gunesh - Gunesh Some 1980s Soviet jazz rock from Turkmenistan.
  19. Sam Ostropov - Blight Music Fun idea: a recent record exploring the kind of music that the David Murray Octet and others like it made in their prime. There are lots of roads that were never fully explored.
  20. John Plonsky Quintet with Betty Ann Blake - Cool Man Cool
  21. Does that mean he won't be recording / touring with them any more? I would be a bit interested in hearing some more small group Marsalis at this point, I guess. Harsh, but fair.
  22. Climaco Sarmiento Y Su Orquesta – Bombo Y Maracas
