Jan Garbarek / Hilliard Ensemble Remember me, my dear Jan Garbarek soprano and tenor saxophones The Hilliard Ensemble (David James countertenor; Rogers Covey-Crump tenor; Steven Harrold tenor; Gordon Jones baritone) 25 years on from the release of Officium, the groundbreaking alliance of Jan Garbarek and The Hilliard Ensemble, comes Remember me, my dear, recorded during the final tour the group made in October 2014. The program is emblematic of the range of repertoire the Norwegian saxophonist and British vocal quartet explored together– from Pérotin, Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume le Rouge, Antoine Brumel to Komitas, Arvo Pärt and more. It could be said that the Hilliard/Garbarek combination, in concert, transcended its source materials, with early music, contemporary composition and improvisation interfused in the responsive acoustics of sacred spaces. And this final album reminds us that the unique Garbarek/Hilliard combination, and its unprecedented exploration of sound, was consistently breathtaking. LISTEN Thomas Zehetmair Sei Solo Johann Sebastian Bach: The Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo Thomas Zehetmair baroque violin Thomas Zehetmair, one of the great violinists of our time, re-visits the solo works of Bach, the summit of the violin repertory. Using period instruments, Zehetmair plays the music with vividness and intelligence to produce a recording that is deeply steeped in the music and at the same time original. The album was recorded at Propstei St. Gerold and is issued as a double CD with texts by Peter Gülke and Thomas Zehetmair. LISTEN © 2019 ECM Records US, A Division of Verve Music Group. Pianist Roberta Piket Showcases the Composing Talents of Husband & Collaborator Billy Mintz on "Domestic Harmony: Piket Plays Mintz," Set for December 6 Release By Thirteenth Note Records Piket's Third Solo Piano Album Features 10 Compositions by the Acclaimed Drummer In an Intimate Performance Originally Meant Only for Mintz's Ears Appearing at Mezzrow, NYC, Thursday, January 16 Playing Billy Mintz Tunes with Several Duos Including Virginia Mayhew, Mike Fahn, & Mintz October 21, 2019 Pianist Roberta Piket presents a truly intimate musical offering with the December 6 release of Domestic Harmony: Piket Plays Mintz on her own Thirteenth Note Records. A solo piano performance (her third, following 2012's Solo and 2015's Solo Volume 2), the album assays ten intriguing compositions by Billy Mintz, the highly regarded drummer who regularly collaborates with Piket -- and who is also her husband. The intimacy on display throughout Domestic Harmony is authentic: it was intended for an audience of one. Piket originally conceived the album a few years ago as a birthday surprise for Mintz. (She allows that it was "a milestone year" for the intensely private Mintz but declines to say which.) She arranged to record it while he was on tour, completed the editing later, and successfully surprised and delighted him when the big day came. "It was just something I was doing for Billy, and not for anybody else," says Piket. "It was only later that I started to think about putting it out." It's a beautiful glimpse of art at its most direct. Every nuance of Piket's lustrous touch, chord voicings, and improvisational energy -- and, on "Destiny," her tender, haunting vocal -- radiates with warmth and fondness for its recipient. Of course, the recipient in question also played no small part in the creation of this music. "[Billy] has a very personal voice," says Piket. "He has a natural talent for looking at the big picture and going beyond just his instrument.... He writes in a very simple, direct way that's incredibly appealing." He has been honored before by musicians performing his compositions, including saxophonist Adam Kolker, pianist Russ Lossing, and Piket herself, who has previously recorded a few of the tunes on Domestic Harmony. The context, however, transforms Piket's interpretations of them into something more personal and frank. If "Destiny," with Piket's vocal, is pointed in its expression, her thoughtful piano playing on "Ghost Sanctuary," "Flight," and "Your Touch" is no less so without it. As well, it's difficult to imagine a more perfect balance of affection with the inherent playfulness in "Shmear" and "Cannonball," both of which (uncoincidentally) feature some of the pianist's most assured and inventive improvisational work. Her unique birthday gift for her husband is now their shared gift to the world. Roberta Piket was born in New York City on August 9, 1965 to a father who was a classical composer father and a mother who was a traditional pop singer. Needless to say, it was a musical household, made more so when at 14 young Roberta stumbled across a secondhand copy of Walter Bishop Jr.'s Speak Low at a synagogue bazaar. It began her journey into jazz piano. Completing a joint double-degree program at New England Conservatory (in piano) and nearby Tufts University (in computer science), Piket first spent an unfulfilling year in software engineering before deciding that music was her true calling. She returned to New York in 1989 and began building a career and a reputation as a pianist. Within a few years she had established relationships with Marian McPartland (appearing on her National Public Radio program Piano Jazz) and Lionel Hampton (who provided her with her first professional recording session on his 1995 For the Love of Music). Piket has since established herself as an adventurous and versatile pianist, ready and able to try anything. Her albums (of which Domestic Harmony is the 13th) and performance projects have ranged from straight ahead to free jazz, from solo piano to big band, from chamber jazz ensemble with string quartet to the electric Alternating Current, and any number of other adventures as both leader and sidewoman. In addition, she maintains a working trio with Mintz, in which she has also begun to feature herself more prominently as a vocalist. In the 2018 Down Beat Critics' Poll, Piket was voted Rising Star in the Organist category and placed 16th in Rising Star Piano, while in the publication's 2018 Readers' Poll she placed 8th in the Jazz Artist category, 7th in Piano, and 5th in Organ. Billy Mintz and Roberta Piket Piket will be performing Billy Mintz's music with several duos -- including saxophonist Virginia Mayhew, valve trombonist Mike Fahn, and Mintz himself -- at Mezzrow, NYC, on Thursday 1/16/20. Other upcoming shows: the Roberta Piket Sextet celebrates the music of Marian McPartland, with special guest Karrin Allyson, at Flushing Town Hall, Friday 12/6; a set of duos with Virginia Mayhew at Maureen's Jazz Cellar, Nyack, NY, Sunday 12/15; the Roberta Piket Organ Trio plays the music of Billy Mintz (featuring tenor saxophonists Tony Malaby and John Gross with Mintz on drums) at Quinn's, Beacon, NY, Monday 5/4/20. In addition, Piket will be a sidewoman on piano and organ with the Billy Mintz Band (also including Rich Perry on tenor saxophone, Adam Kolker on saxophones and woodwinds, Curtis Folkes on trombone, and Hilliard Greene on bass) at Balboa, Brooklyn, Wednesday 12/18; Quinn's, Beacon, NY Monday 12/23; iBeam, Brooklyn, Friday 12/27; and Smalls, NYC, Saturday 12/28. Fifty Years of Edition of Contemporary Music Since 1969 ECM has treated music production as a fine art. Manfred Eicher, the head of ECM, has always followed his intuition in finding and combining musicians, kindling new ideas, sculpting sound, and breaking musical ground. The record label in Munich has long provided a unique forum for improvised and notated music. In 2019 it embodies half a century of continuous endeavour and staunch independence. Few industries have undergone such fundamental change over the years as the music business. Against this background, ECM’s quiet pursuit of a self-defined goal seems increasingly like an act of resistance. For if ‘contemporary’ still means ‘of our own time’, it also means standing up for timeless values, and embracing the present while also rejecting its constraints. By now, the ECM catalogue has over 1600 titles, including global successes such as Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert and The Melody At Night, With You, Pat Metheny’s Offramp, Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, and Officium with Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble. Although ECM albums have now been available on streaming services since 2017, for Manfred Eicher the CD and the LP remain the preferred media for his work. It is only the album, with its finely-calibrated musical dramaturgy, that allows the listener to complete the journey into the ‘audible landscapes’ that have made the label famous. Even today, each ECM release is conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk – a fully integrated aesthetic experience, with music, sound design, and artwork. While the historic achievements of ECM have been celebrated in major exhibitions, and Manfred Eicher has received numerous honours, such as his admission into the highly prestigious band of Honorary Fellows of the Royal Academy of Music in London, the label is not resting on its laurels. Alongside the much-acclaimed 21-CD box set (2018) with the Art Ensemble of Chicago and associated ensembles, ECM continues to give new impulses to creative music. These have recently included a spotlight on Israeli jazz musicians, with albums by trumpeter Avishai Cohen and pianists Shai Maestro and Yonathan Avishai. Remarkable releases on ECM New Series have latterly included the 3-CD box set (2017) with all of György Kurtág’s works for ensemble and choir, and Anja Lechner and Pablo Márquez’s revelatory transcriptions of Schubert for cello and guitar (Die Nacht, 2018). The special qualities of what began as a small cultural enterprise were soon recognised. In 1972, in its first article on ECM, Der Spiegel ran a report on a twenty-nine-year-old ‘loner’ in Munich who was increasingly of interest to high-profile musicians in the United States. According to Der Spiegel, this was because ECM was now releasing the ‘best jazz recordings’ – ‘the gold standard for sound, presence and pressing’. At that point, the Munich label had only been in existence for two-and-a-half years. Manfred Eicher, born in Lindau, Germany, had studied double bass in Berlin. Having soon discovered his love for the music of artists such as Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Miles Davis and his bassist Paul Chambers, he became intensely preoccupied with jazz. As a production assistant at Deutsche Grammophon he had learnt what it was to strive for the highest standards in recordings of classical music. And he now started to record improvised music with the same precision and focus. Almost as a statement of intent, the first title issued by the new label was Free at Last, by the US pianist Mal Waldron. Pioneering recordings of artists such as Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Paul Bley, Egberto Gismonti and Pat Metheny established ECM’s reputation as a label to be reckoned with. By the late 1970s names such as Meredith Monk and Steve Reich regularly appeared in the ECM catalogue, and in 1984 the company introduced its New Series, dedicated to notated music. Launched to showcase the music of Arvo Pärt with Tabula Rasa, the New Series now ranges all the way from organa composed by Pérotin in Paris in 1200 through to contemporary composition. Pärt, and subsequently Giya Kancheli, Valentin Silvestrov and Tigran Mansurian, was introduced to new audiences in the West by ECM’s New Series; for many years now György Kurtág and Heinz Holliger have released important works on the Munich label. Artists such as the Hilliard Ensemble, Kim Kashkashian, Gidon Kremer, the Danish String Quartet and András Schiff have presented listeners with outstanding performances of core classical repertoire but have also introduced them to exciting new discoveries. Both series – ECM and ECM New Series – have emphasised multi-genre or transcultural projects – from recordings by the improvising trio Codona - with Don Cherry, Collin Walcott and Nana Vasconcelos - to Officium, which brought Jan Garbarek and the Hilliards together, and François Couturier’s Tarkovsky Quartet. ECM is regarded today as ‘the most important imprint in the world for jazz and new music’, to quote the British newspaper, the Independent. While the form and constancy of notated music have also found their way into improvisation, inspired interpretations of existing compositions convey a tangible sense of risk, spontaneity and improvisatory freedom. The British music critic and writer Paul Griffiths aptly pinpointed the unique status of ECM, describing it as ‘almost a musical genre in its own right – a genre with blurred boundaries but a definite centre, in some place where music is prized wherever it comes from, some time when nothing has yet quite happened finally, when even a recording – seemingly the end of the process – can show its value in opening a question, or more than one.’ From early on the model of a literary publishing house was an inspiration for the label. Many of the musicians who recorded their debut albums with ECM in their mid-twenties have kept faith with the label ever since. As Manfred Eicher once said in an interview, ‘Our work is based on the notion of permanence.’ In addition Eicher feels that ‘it is important that relationships also develop between the company’s artists; that’s good for their creative work’. As a record producer, he is a partner in the artistic process, involved in everything from the choice of recording venue to the musical shaping of the album to the cover design for the finished product. And on the subject of cover designs: ECM record sleeves, much admired and much imitated, have made design history, and the Swiss publisher Lars Müller Verlag has devoted two books to ECM’s cover art. ECM recordings are often described as having a transparent sound that is rich in overtones. But there is no one-size-fits-all ‘ECM sound’. Each recording is attuned to the sound of the players and singers, not vice versa. ‘Of course we take every possible care with the technology’, as Manfred Eicher has said, ‘But the deciding factor is always the music and the aesthetic ideas that go with it. That is what gives the sound its characteristics. The vessel is always shaped to fit its contents.’ A specific location is selected for each new project – a place with the right acoustics and atmosphere, be it in Oslo, New York, Lugano or in the South of France, be it a radio studio in Zurich or the chapel of the idyllic St. Gerold Priory in the Austrian mountains. The ECM head office on the outskirts of Munich with a workforce of barely a dozen relies on a longstanding international distribution network, with major companies covering the main markets and smaller, independent firms operating in other key territories. Annual production numbers at ECM are still rising – despite this being a time when the record industry is having to cope with ongoing structural crises. Manfred Eicher takes the long view: ‘Every decade – for fifty years now – we have supposedly been faced with a “huge crisis”. The oil crisis in the early 1970s seemed to herald the death of vinyl; today there is talk of the end of physical records and CDs alike. So it is all the more crucial that we record the best artists of our time in optimal conditions, seriously and with integrity. Economic issues will be resolved somehow. Art and music are and will always be a fundamental need in society.’ The special qualities of what began as a small cultural enterprise were soon recognised. In 1972, in its first article on ECM, Der Spiegel ran a report on a twenty-nine-year-old ‘loner’ in Munich who was increasingly of interest to high-profile musicians in the United States. Artist Title Time Joel Harrison Raindrops in Uncommon Times 09:51 Joel Harrison One is Really Many 06:59 Joel Harrison Ballad of Blue Mountain 05:56 Joel Harrison Permanent Impermanence 05:17 Joel Harrison Creator Destroyer 12:48 Joel Harrison Blue Mountain (Slight Return) 07:36 Joel Harrison "Still Point: Turning World" Impacting: October 17 2019 Format(s): Jazz To enter the immersive realm of Still Point: Turning World is to join guitarist/composer Joel Harrison and colleagues in embracing the gloriously enlightening globalization of music, unhindered by category or preconception. This original eight-movement work brings together contemporary percussion quartet Talujon (Matt Ward, Michael Lipsey, Tom Kolor, David Cossin), Indian sarode player Anupam Shobhakar, and jazz musicians Hans Glawaschnig (bass), Ben Wendel (saxophone/bassoon) and Dan Weiss (drums/tabla) to realise the guitarist’s striking, kaleidoscopic vision. Guests include V. Selvaganesh (perc.), Nittin Mitta (tabla), and Stephan Crump (bass). Dive into ‘Raindrops in Uncommon Times' and you’re transported along marimba and tabla-hued tributaries as guitar, sarode, sax, and konnakol improvisations coruscate across its rippling shadows; and in ‘One is Really Many’, the excitement of Shobhakar’s complex Indian raga patterns are matched by Weiss’s intense, fiery drumming. Harrison’s gritty, wailing guitar phrases and Wendel’s extraordinary wailing saxophone color ‘Permanent Impermanence’, leading on to mystically percussive interlude ‘Wind Over Eagle Lake’ and ‘Ballad of Blue Mountain’s W. African-derived rivulets. Furtive ‘Time Present Time Past’ crackles with cross- rhythms and stratified riffs; epic ‘Creator/Destroyer’ explodes with multiple solos and an extraordinary percussion intro; and the relative calm of closing ‘Blue Mountain (A Slight Return)’ is ramped up by mesmeric tabla and kanjira, featuring the exquisite Selvaganesh, who is best known for playing with John McLaughlin in Remember Shakti. Careful listening shows linked themes that binds the work together. The concept of Still Point: Turning World is to take the listener on a soulful journey”, confirms Harrison. “The aim is to go deeply into quiet, private introverted spaces, and then also into passionate explosions of percussive wildness.” This is, indeed, a genre-busting odyssey of discovery.

Guys, my OP was not about Twitter. My concern is about computers. It is a fact that I don't know what I don't know. I also don't know the lingo. I like the idea of buying the textbook the community college uses. I'll investigate that. Thanks! -
I received my glasses in less than two weeks. Functionally, I'm quite satisfied. They are very comfortable, and the prescription is good. However, as a fashion accessory, I feel they are too small for my face. Next time I will order a larger size if I can. Thanks for your comments!

Thanks for those two suggestions, Michael! In fact I have seen Raspberry Pi before. They now say that you can do your own pong-era video games. Maybe that's the way I'll go if I get any money for Christmas. Jim, what you say has the ring of truth. I would like to start with a book first, but maybe our community college is the way to go. -

LOL! Two years ago I did find two kids from my nearby high school, and they taught me how to use Twitter. But I still feel that I need a reference book to go back to (which I never had). (By the way, that high school was Pistol Pete's alma mater.) -
I have never taken a computer course, and I have never read a computer-related instructional book. I expect that the textbooks they start youngsters out with are pretty easy to understand. Can you recommend a very basic book for using a PC? I currently use Windows 10, if that matters. (I have found "X for Dummies" books to be too wordy for me; and I would prefer something a little more professional, even if it might be a school textbook for kids.) Thanks!

Leo Sherman "Tone Wheel" Impacting: October 15 2019 Format(s): Jazz Artist Title Time Leo Sherman In Flight 06:25 Leo Sherman The Eclipse 05:04 Leo Sherman Spice Planet 06:38 Leo Sherman Nocturne 06:42 Leo Sherman Holdover 04:08 Leo Sherman Chagall 06:10 Leo Sherman Looking Back Again 05:51 Leo Sherman Aquí Me Quedo 09:31 Leo Sherman Tone Wheel 05:30 BASSIST/COMPOSER LEO SHERMAN LEADS STELLAR QUINTET ON HIS EVOCATIVE DEBUT ALBUM TONEWHEEL Brimming with vitality, Sherman’s compositions are a musical self-portrait, stamped by his early childhood experience as a Soviet refugee, his immigrant upbringing in Baltimore, and his evolution as a New York-based artist Available October 25th, 2019 via Outside In Music Personnel: Leo Sherman, bass Paul Jones, tenor saxophone Alex Goodman, guitar Ben Winkelman, piano Dan Pugach, drums The term Tonewheel can mean a number of things, as bassist/composer Leo Sherman explains in the liner notes to his stirring debut album of that name. “It’s the mechanical wheel inside of an organ that allows it to sound,” Sherman writes. “It’s a name for the color wheel,” he adds, “and it’s also an organizational model for emotions.” This last meaning was of particular interest, and so Sherman began to ponder Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions, “a circle that arranges our primary emotions by intensity, combination, and relation to their opposite emotions.” And he reflected on his own complicated journey, the roads he traveled to become the artist he is today. Joining forces with saxophonist Paul Jones, guitarist Alex Goodman, pianist Ben Winkelman and drummer Dan Pugach, Sherman followed his muse and emerged with a document of mostly original compositions, Tonewheel, that brings it all into vivid relief. That Sherman is here at all to make music is not to be taken for granted: he and his mother nearly died of sepsis during childbirth in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1987. As Soviet Jews, they were at the mercy of nationalist and antisemitic hospital staff, an ordeal that convinced the family to flee Russia for good, when Leo was two years old. When they arrived in the U.S., their new surroundings in Baltimore, Maryland were far from a paradise, but Sherman got an education and became fluent in Spanish. His music-making is informed by a certain international perspective that he gained from his earliest days. Fittingly, the quintet on Tonewheel has an international makeup: Sherman originally from Russia, Goodman from Canada, Winkelman from Australia, Pugach from Israel and Jones the only American-born member. As is common among children of immigrants, Sherman had to overcome strong opposition from his parents when it came to pursuing music professionally. But he had the clarity of conviction to know that studying international relations at George Washington University wasn’t for him. He dropped out after a year to focus on his real goal: hitting the DC jazz scene and gaining authority in as many settings as he could. Then he headed north to William Paterson University, and ultimately to a master’s degree at Manhattan School of Music. Since becoming a New Yorker he’s played with James Weidman, Gene Bertoncini, Johnny O’Neal, Victor Jones and the Wolff & Clark Expedition (led by Michael Wolff and Mike Clark), among others, all while honing his conception as a bandleader. On Tonewheel we hear the fruits of those labors, in a tapestry of music that brims with orchestrational detail and melodic expression. The soaring and intricate “In Flight,” the ballad “Looking Back Again,” the two piano trio pieces “Nocturne” and “Holdover” and the lyrical finale “Tonewheel” all tie back to the composer’s life experience in some way, as Sherman makes plain in his liner notes. “The Eclipse,” “Spice Planet,” “Chagall” and the one non-original, “Aquí Me Quedo” by the murdered Chilean dissident Victor Jara, reflect some aspect of Sherman’s engagement with the wider world. The music presents challenges, not least of all for the bassist, who stays on top of every intricate part, bowed and pizzicato, getting a great sound on his solos and steering the music with agility and groove. Every bandmate rises to the occasion and more, as Sherman was confident would happen. It was at Manhattan School of Music that Sherman met Goodman, a marvelous guitarist with several fine releases to his credit. “Technical prowess aside,” says Sherman, “Alex really has a voice already on his instrument. I love the melodic shapes to his lines, but also there’s a rhythmic control and playfulness that I was always fascinated by.” Winkelman, another accomplished leader in his own right, “orchestrates beautifully and his touch is perfect too,” Sherman adds. “He can really dig into the instrument as he does, but on the trio cuts he brings out this bell-like quality in the piano that I really dig. He’s also a rhythmic explorer like Alex, really influenced by Cuban music, claves in various odd meters, hybrid groupings and such.” Sherman met Pugach on a gig roughly three years ago and ended up becoming a member of the drummer’s Grammy-nominated nonet. (Pugach is 2019 winner of the prestigious BMI Charlie Parker Prize/Manny Albam Commission.) “Dan’s an absolute joy to play with, very sensitive and always extremely grooving. At the core what I love is his pocket: we really lock, and that sort of trust allows for him to execute all kinds of groupings and rhythmic devices that color the music even more.” And Jones, on tenor sax, has “a great sense of pulse and also a really interesting harmonic approach,” Sherman offers. “He has a strong and unique way of weaving through strange progressions, while also feeling the pulse really strongly.” Jones’ unbounded free-form exploration on the song by Chile’s Victor Jara, who was killed at the outset of the 1973 Pinochet coup, proves to be one of the most striking departures on Tonewheel. “Jara’s story has relevance today in light of what we’re going through,” Sherman argues. “The piece is basically the story of his last moments. Not everyone I know could play the role of Jara, and evoke that kind of anguish and terror, the way Paul does in that solo. He really taps into it.” One key thing Sherman has taken away from the experience of overcoming obstacles, in music and life, is to be keenly aware of other people’s obstacles: “Growing up where I did in Baltimore, growing up with pretty much nothing, you start to notice how other people around you are going through the same thing, struggling and pulling themselves up, again and again. I wanted Tonewheel on some level to be about that.” Given that jazz is a music significantly based on stories, Tonewheel provides the ideal platform for Sherman’s own story and that of others, establishing his unique place within jazz’s rich legacy.
